3 Pastor Appreciation Month and Day 2018 (compiled from several different websites regarding Clergy/Pastor Appreciation Month) October is Pastor Appreciation Month, also called Clergy Appreciation Month and October 14, 2018 is Pastor Appreciation Day. In Timothy 1 (5:17), Paul began the concept of clergy appreciation when he stated that the elders of the church are worthy of a double honor. Clergy Appreciation Month began in 1992 as a way to encourage congregations to show their appreciation, love and support for their pastors. This affirmation can provide new life and energy for a pastor who may be dealing with burnout, frustration,disillusionment, isolation or stress. Pastors are often "on call" around the clock. Some Pastor Appreciation Ideas follow: Send a card of appreciation to your pastor and his/her spouse. Organize a special collection. Talk to the board of your church and see about taking a special offering for your pastor. Give a personal gift. A gift certificate to a restaurant or to a local store can be nice thank you gift. Pastors usually spend so much time giving to other people, receiving a gift certificate to do or buy something for themselves will be a much-appreciated gift. Send a Pastor Appreciation Day gift basket which includes thoughtful gifts for the family. Draft a prayer calendar. Ask members of the congregation to commit to pray for the pastor by signing up for a day to pray. Prayer can be the best gift to give a pastor and knowing that a congregation is praying can give the pastor encouragement, strength and affirmation. Drop some treats off at your pastor s office! Or a jar of mixed nuts with a note that says, Just to remind you of your congregation that loves you! Note: There are single crypts for sale in our Columbarium. WALK TO EMMAUS Please pray for the women attending the Emmaus Walk October FROM THE PASTOR S DESK I have been drawn to a very familiar scripture lately. It is Matthew 7:7-11. It says, Ask and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! For some, this passage speaks about asking God for whatever they may want: money, power, new cars, stuff, etc. However, this isn t about asking for that kind of gift from God. This is why people have issues when they are in churches that preach the prosperity gospel: if you are living right, then you will have all the money you want and in abundance, and all the stuff you want in abundance as well. I am thankful that we do not focus on the gospel of prosperity but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. I am thankful that when we read this passage, we don t automatically assume that this means that God is going to give us lots of money and stuff. This passage is helping us to understand that God really wants to and is ready to listen to our prayers and answer prayers that are reasonable, not give us stuff that we demand or answer prayers in the way that we think prayers should be answered. It is a passage to let us know that God is listening and waiting for us to reach out, just like children would reach out to their earthly father in times of need. When was the last time you knocked on God s door and anticipated the good that God has waiting for you? I encourage you to ask, seek and knock and wait to see what God has in store for you, for us. When you spend time with God, God will show up in ways that you may not anticipate and surprise you. Grace and Peace Pastor Angie

4 From the Library As most of you know, I love to travel! One of my favorite things to do when I travel is to visit libraries, bookstores, bookshelves in homes just call me a book voyeur! There is nothing like the feeling when a book has "found you"! On my recent trip I was lucky enough to discover several of these "books in waiting". My favorite was The Seven Whispers by Christina Baldwin. In listening to the voice of spirit, she hears these whispers: Maintain peace of mind Move at the pace of guidance Practice certainty of purpose Surrender to surprise Ask for what you need and offer what you can Love the folks in front of you Return to the world Each whisper is explored in the seven chapters and it reminds me that you do not have to travel to far and exotic places to hear the call of spirit. We are called to mindfulness wherever we are, to notice what is happening around us, to love and to act out our response to that call. "Prayer is not a pious gesture at all, it is a response to the One whose heart beats with ours." 5 Prayer Shawl Ministry Fall has arrived and we look forward to seeing the colors of nature! Prayer shawls were given to Noah Adamson and Elizabeth Grimm. If you have any yarn lying around, you can donate it to the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Monetary donations are always appreciated! If you have a friend or family member in need of a prayer shawl or baby blanket, please call the church/ or Len Judickas/ If you are interested in learning to crochet or knit, we usually meet on the first Wednesday of the month at CVUMC. We have some yarn for your use. Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 3 at 10:00 am. See you there! Blessing Box Your help to supply items for our Blessing Box is on-going. Take a trip to the past here at CV United Methodist Church. Jump in the DeLorean with Doc Brown and Marty McFly and go back to Join us for a fun movie and snacks! Did you know that Trunk or Treat falls on a Wednesday night? So, we are revving up and preparing for even more of us to show up this year. It is a great outreach that we have for our community. Those who participated last year liked the way that we had the parking lot, so we will be doing it that way again this year. We will park our cars in the semicircle that we set up early in the day. As you follow the directions of the person showing you where to park, you will pull in and get your trunk ready. Please show up at least 30 minutes before our start time since we have children and parents who show up and line up early. They will come in at one place and circle around in a one-way fashion. We encourage you to dress up and decorate your car. We will have a contest again this year for the best costume and best trunk. Two gift certificates will be given out. We all have a blast every year! We will serve hotdogs, lemonade and coffee that night. If you would like to help with serving, please let us know in the office. A sign-up sheet will be outside of the office for those who will be participating with their trunks. If you want to participate but don t feel you can drive in the evening, partner up with someone. Can t come? You can also help out by providing emergency candy in case we run out. You may drop the candy off any day during office hours. Let s all be prepared for Trunk or Treat on Wednesday, October 31 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Set up for cars will be at 5:00 pm.
