For more informa on please contact Barbara Bertani at (210) TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, the languages of the whole world arise to God in a Pentecost of praise. In some American dioceses, the Mass is offered every Sunday in more than thirty different languages, including the silent praise of American Sign Language. Fi y years ago, the landscape of liturgy was very different. It was grounded firmly in La n, which is to the present day s ll the official language of the Roman Rite. Very few people were fluent in La n, even though in those days La n was far more widely studied in school. Nevertheless, almost every Catholic was competent in the responses and chants of La n since it is not difficult to pronounce. The clergy were normally minimally competent in La n, since much of seminary educa on was conducted in that language. When the Second Va can Council was convened, all of the debate and daily work of the council was to be in La n. In the first session in 1962, Boston s Cardinal Richard Cushing con nually complained about it, and threatened not to return in 1963 if something wasn t done. He convinced the fathers when he rose to speak in fairly fluent La n in an unforge able Boston twang. The next year, he returned, but with a simultaneous transla on system funded by the people of Boston. The ordinary everyday language of the people, the vernacular, had arrived at the Va can via Boston! The Caritas Corner A family of seven was in tears as they watched firefighters try to save their home in far South Bexar County. We lost everything in the house and only have what we had on our back and feet said the homeowner. Fortunately, all five children, ages 5 to 7, made it safely out of the house. However, they were unable to get any of their belongings out belongings like much needed equipment for their youngest son who has cerebral palsy reported KSAT-12 News. For some reason, the insurance settlement was not sufficient to replace their belongings or get them started on a new home. They are living in a small RV trailer on their property. As a gift of kindness, we delivered through the Caritas Fund -- two $1,000 gift cards to help ease the family s burden and help replace their personal necessities. Additionally, we will continue to help the family find a cheaper alternative to the mobile home they are trying to purchase and help get a better resolution on the insurance settlement issue. Despite their loss, the family said they are grateful to still have each other. This Caritas or Charity -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recognizable one time needs to help get back on their feet. In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund accepts individual as well as business donations.
