3 SAN FERNANDO CATHEDRAL SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS MARCH 13, 2016 A message from Fr. Tony STRAIGHT LINES God writes straight with crooked lines, the saying goes. The power of Paul s tes mony that everything is junk but knowledge of Jesus and the power of his resurrec on is a straight enough message. And, God knows, Paul had a crooked journey before his blinding insight straight from God. Through Isaiah, God reminds us all that the past great works were as nothing compared to the new crea on. Can t you see it? we are asked, as if we are s ll wandering along our crooked lines. And there is no straighter line than that between the woman whose misery is intense and the God whose mercy in Jesus is deeper and more acute. You just can t beat this kind of good news. Copyright J. El tes monio contundente de san Pablo, cuando nos dice que todo es basura fuera del conocer a Cristo y experimentar la fuerza de su Resurrección, es un mensaje bien directo y claro aunque Dios sabe que Pablo anduvo por una senda bien torcida antes de recibir la luz cegadora del Señor. Isaías nos recuerda que los grandes milagros del pasado no son nada en comparación con la nueva creación que Dios va a realizar. No lo notan? nos pregunta el profeta, como si todavía anduviéramos perdidos por nuestras sendas torcidas. Y no hay renglón más derecho que la línea que conecta la intensa miseria de una mujer pecadora con la misericordia de Dios que se muestra en la persona de Jesús. Eso sí que son Buenas Nuevas! 9 San Francesco Di Paola San Antonio, TX MARCH 13, 2016 The San Francesco di Paola faith community to attend the "Devotion of The 13 Fridays" to honor our Patron. Please join us for Mass and the devotional each Friday evening. The San Francesco Altar and Rosary Society is taking orders for Easter Lilies Memorials to honor their loved ones of our parishioners. They will help decorate our beautiful church for Easter. The cost is $12.00 each. Please indicate who the memorial is for and also the name who is giving the memorial. Envelopes will be provided in the back of the church for your convenience. Please make checks payable to: San Francesco Altar/ Rosary Society You may place in the collection basket or give to Rose Marie Pagonis she can be reached at A memorial list will be placed in the back of the church tables on Easter weekend with the names of the requested memorials. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Three years ago, as we made the shi in the Eucharis c Prayer from Benedict to Francis, we named a treasure in our tradi on. From apostolic mes, the Church has sent disciples on mission with a mandate to proclaim the gospel. Paul and Barnabas and Timothy come to mind as men invested with responsibility for community and mission. First we see bishops, overseers, good men appointed by the acclaim of their people, the center of leadership, of prayer, of word and sacrament. Their territories were small ini ally, small enough to get everyone into one room and for the bishop to know everyone s name. In me, men were appointed to func on as a council of advisers, elders, or presbyters. That isn t a comment on chronological age, rather it indicates the maturity of their wisdom and faith. Before long, and only when the bishop was absent, some of these men stood in for him to do what bishops usually did: preaching, presiding at Eucharist. The deacons had a strong and visible role in liturgy and service, especially in the care of the poor, but were gradually overshadowed by the new importance of the presbyter. As the Roman Empire first to ered and then collapsed completely by 476, bishops increasingly became civil servants to maintain order and dispense jus ce. Conferences and du es summoned bishops away from their home posts, and presbyters were entrusted with the sacramental and preaching du es, even though at one me runners were sent out from the bishop s Mass to bring fragments of the host to drop into chalices as a sign of the church s unity around its bishop.
