9 San Francesco Di Paola San Antonio, TX DECEMBER 18, 2016 The Caritas Corner Thank you all for your continued generosity and love in action in caring for our brothers and sisters in need in our community. The Caritas or Charity -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recognizable one time needs in getting back on their feet. Since the beginning of the fund in Dec 2014 over $11,000 worth of assistance has been disbursed again, as a result of your tremendous generosity. Throughout the year we are continually looking for additional brothers and sisters in need in our community who deserve our help. We would value any input you might have in helping us indentify those in need. Inputs can be made to Ron Bucchi, Society President, All donations are tax deductible under SFDP s 501(c) (3) designation as a not-for-profit entity. Again, we are funded through the second collection donations normally on the third Sunday of each month. In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund accepts individual as well as business donations. What is a carol anyway? Originally, a carol was any kind of communal song sung at a fes val such as a harvest. By the thirteenth century or so, carols were associated with household celebra ons. Carol comes from the Old French carula, meaning a circular dance. Carols weren t for church, since the language of liturgy was La n and the carols were in the common language. Their characteris c sound comes from medieval chord pa erns, and they o en have strong refrains for everyone to sing. Even in the churches of the Reforma on, carols didn t make it into church services un l the 1870s or so, since there was a preference for psalms. Anglicans resisted popular carols; most of our beloved carols came via the Methodists, an offshoot of the Church of England. The Catholic Church generally didn t admit carols to liturgy either, but we didn t make laws against them. We are told that the beloved carol Silent Night comes from Catholic Austria and a harried parish music director. Joseph Mohr, the priest of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, had wri en the words in 1816, but offered them to his music director, Franz Gruber, when the church s organ broke. Mohr asked him to write a melody that could be played on guitar as a prelude to Mass. Gruber finished the tune just hours before midnight Mass in The people were shocked to hear a guitar in church, but were charmed by the sweet lullaby. The church was swept away by a flood in the 1990s and the village later relocated, but the townspeople have set up the Silent Night Memorial Chapel at the site.
