3 Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 Dear Friends in Christ: FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Growing up with brothers and sisters, we were always in competition for the approval of our parents, whether consciously or unconsciously. At times, it manifested itself by our reporting to Mom or Dad when we were aware of one or more of our siblings doing something wrong, especially when we, ourselves, had done something right. So, if our mother told us to clean our rooms, we might quickly do it, and then report on the other(s) who hadn t done it. Sometimes, my mother would let the wind out of our sails of self-righteousness by reminding us that we were not perfect either. She might have even pointed out the last occasion when we had not obeyed. As I look back, I m glad she didn t encourage our tattling on one another. Evidently the rich man in today s gospel was seeking the approval of Jesus when he told him that he had observed all the commandments since his youth. If he was looking for Jesus to congratulate him, he was surely disappointed. Jesus did not excuse him from following the commandments, but pointed out that real discipleship required more than that. It required that he unburden himself of all that kept him from being a true follower; in his case it was his many possessions. Then He instructed him to follow Him. There are several books out right now about how addiction to technology disrupts relationships; they have titles like How to Break Up with Your ipad. They do not insist that technology is bad in and of itself, but that overuse can get in the way of relationships. I have literally seen people get up from their pew during church and leave to answer a cell phone call. And I have been in the company of people who are paying more attention to their electronic device than to the people they are with. Am I that boring? Please don t answer that! So even if we are not considered rich, there may be other things in our lives that stand in the way of our relationship with Jesus. Perhaps it is an addiction, or a relationship, or just being too busy with things we have made more important than nurturing our relationship with God and others. May God help us all to be, not just a rule follower but, a follower of Jesus Christ. Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. \ Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP For some years now St. Michael s grief support group has been guiding and comforting those who have lost a friend or loved one on their journey toward healing and a normal and fulfilling life once again. There are many benefits in belonging to a support group. Two of the most important are the understanding and caring among those who attend and finding hope for the future. Sometimes friends and family let it be known that we should be over it by now but we know that each of us experiences the death of a loved one in our own unique way, and there is no particular time within which we should recover from our loss. If you have suffered the loss of a loved one within the past two years, you are welcome to our group. Our meetings started on Thursday, October 11 th in Room 13 (Parish Library) at 1:30p.m. and will meet for six weeks. It is not too late to join! The morning will begin with Continental Breakfast and Registration at 8:30 in Rooms 11 & 12 followed by the Reflection in the Church. There will be short meetings for each ministry lead by the Ministry Heads after the Reflection. Other Ministry Volunteers are welcome to attend. All are encouraged to attend the Morning Mass at 8:00 prior to Registration. Are you interested in becoming Catholic? The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the way to do it. Who it is for? The RCIA is a journey to help people who want to receive the Catholic Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Maybe you are the spouse (or about to be a spouse) of a Catholic and have watched the importance their faith plays in their life. Maybe you are one who stopped your Catholic education at a very young age and now have a need to complete your sacraments. Maybe you were Baptized, received Holy Communion but missed your Confirmation. Maybe you are of another religion and believe the teachings of the Catholic Church are calling you to become one with us. Whatever the case may be, you are welcome to join us on the journey. Those adults wishing to be baptized, and those wishing to be received into the church, along with their sponsors, will meet weekly on Sunday mornings to learn how we live our Catholic Faith.
