3 Solemnity of the Holy Trinity Page 3 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR If you would like to see the home and family at the dedication ceremony, visit: -new-home-thanks-in-part-to-their-faith/ Sincerely in Christ, Dear Friends in Christ, This year our parish once again supported building a home for a qualified family through Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County. We were a pillar sponsor, which means we gave money, but we were also a church volunteer sponsor which means we actually assisted in construction of the house. As part of this process, you may recall the wooden wall studs many of you signed with well wishes and blessings that were subsequently used in the interior walls of the home. This year s build was in Safety Harbor so the commute to the worksite was pretty easy. Many of the parish s seventeen volunteers for the two days for which we were scheduled had volunteered with us the previous two years building other homes. But we also had some new folks from the parish show up in their work clothes, ready to dig right in. The biggest challenge was probably the heat but, thankfully, a breeze came through the open windows now and then. And, speaking for myself, I apparently used some leg muscles I m not routinely using because they were sore for days afterward. But it was great fun! We laughed and teased one another, and at day s end, we realized that we had accomplished a great deal while also getting to know some fellow parishioners a little better. But the real reward was when we were able to attend the dedication ceremony which took place a week ago Saturday, on June 3 rd. As a part of the dedication ceremony, we got to see and hear from almost all the family members who have now moved into this house. A seven member household, they spoke about being crowded into a two-bedroom apartment without much hope of being able to afford something better. Through Habitat, they will now be homeowners paying several hundred dollars less a month for a five bedroom home which they will eventually own. The parents and the five children of the family were charmingly gracious. They circulated and welcomed and thanked everyone for being there. From the youngest family members to the parents, they expressed most sincere gratitude to God and to Habitat and to all the faith communities who supported the Faith Build. I left the ceremony realizing that a most deserving family received the benefit of home ownership through this Habitat for Humanity Faith Build (funded by twelve local churches of varying denominations). NEXT SUNDAY IS THE FEAST OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST. THERE WILL BE A HOLY HOUR FOLLOWING THE 11 AM MASS. NURSERY UPDATE Due to an overwhelming response from the community, we will be keeping the nursery open during the summer (for the 9:30 Mass) on a limited volunteer basis. Please consider becoming a nursery volunteer, especially if you are using the services. Your time, even once a month, will help spread the commitment! Ask yourself: How can my understanding of the Trinity become more of a real influence in my life? Am I willing to be given over to creative action in my faith journey? 4 St. Michael the Archangel Church June 11, 2017 Page 4 40 HOURS OF EXPOSITION FOR THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI Our Lady of Lourdes, 750 San Salvador Dr., Dunedin, will be having 40 Hours of Exposition for the Feast of Corpus Christi beginning with Mass on Thursday, June 15 at 7 pm, followed by Exposition. Concluding liturgies begin at 9 am on Saturday, June 17 and include Led Holy Hour, Procession, and Benediction. Memorial candles are available for purchase and will be lit in honor of loved ones. You may sign up for one hour increments of prayer throughout the 40 hours by contacting Lisa at or lisa@ourladydunedin.org. The main doors of the church will be locked during Adoration from 8:00 pm until 7:00 am. Please use entrance by chapel (Pieta). SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY ROBOTICS SUMMER CAMPS FOR GIRLS Saint Leo University will host Girls Can! Robotics camps in July at the campus at State Road 52, St. Leo, FL, The day camps are for girls ages 10 to 15. 5 Solemnity of the Holy Trinity Page 5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It is often heard that today s observance is an idea feast, and that it is somewhat difficult to grasp its meaning. Other great solemnities, such as Christmas and Easter, have an easily grasped core. Yet, even though the Trinity is at the heart of our faith, firmly declared in the Creed since the Council of Nicea in 325, we are used to having people shrug and say, Well, it s a mystery. Perhaps it is more helpful to think of this as a relationship feast since it unveils our deepest identity. Dorothy Day was a great social reformer, pacifist, and ardent lover of the Trinity. When people told her that she would certainly be canonized one day (the process is indeed underway), she protested dismissively by remarking that people were raising a fuss just because she was not afraid to talk about God. She loved the Trinity, and treasured the traditional icon for the feast, also known as The Hospitality of Abraham, depicting the three angelic beings seated at a table tilted toward the viewer and laden with bread and wine. For her, the Trinity revealed the heart of the Catholic life, three C s if you will: community, communication, and communion. Bishop Parkes has granted permission to use this grotto as a public place for veneration for the centennial of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. On the 13th of each month, from May through October, there will be two public gatherings to pray the rosary in the grotto.
