3 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page 3 Dear Friends in Christ, FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR After several weeks of Lenten preparation, we arrive now at Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week. We call it Holy Week because it celebrates the climax of our Lord s redemptive events. In popular Christian culture, Christmas may seem the bigger feast, perhaps because of its emphasis on children and gift giving, but Easter is the highest Holy Day of our Church year. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and the celebration of the Lord s entrance into the Holy City of Jerusalem where He will first be celebrated but then arrested and put to death. We are given blessed palms to commemorate His glorious entry even knowing that the Lord is making Himself vulnerable to the forces that wished to keep Him from speaking God s word and that will put Him to a shameful death. On Tuesday of Holy Week, Bishop Parkes will celebrate the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle. In this Mass, he will bless the Sacred Oils that will be distributed to the various parishes in the Diocese to be used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Anointing of the Sick. Also during the Mass the clergy will renew their ordination promises. It is a beautiful Mass and all are invited to attend and witness these special elements of the Chrism Mass. On Holy Thursday, we will have the Mass of the Lord s Supper celebrating the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the washing of the feet whereby Jesus demonstrated His coming not to be served, but to serve. And on Good Friday, we will celebrate the Lord s Passion and journey with him to Calvary. Finally we celebrate the Lord s triumphant resurrection on Easter. The first Easter Mass is the Great Vigil of Easter on Holy Saturday. It is the only Mass allowed on that day and in it, new members will be added to our Catholic faith here and around the world, some receiving all the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation, while Others, already baptized, will receive Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. It is a very long but beautiful ceremony. My purpose in briefly describing these celebrations is to encourage you to participate in all of them or at least some of them. Even though we are not required to, the investment of our time and effort can only help us in celebrating the great feast of Easter with greater devotion and joy. Please look over the schedule and consider where you might like to take greater part in the High Holy Days of the Church. I don t know, but I do know that God has blessed me with your love and kindness for the past ten years in ways I can t begin to count. Please know that I will carry you and that wonderful Diamond Jubilee celebration in my heart when I leave in early June. My prayer for each of you is that you remain close to God through the Mass, Sacraments, helping those in need, and through a deepening relationship with Christ through the Gospels. Speaking of the Gospels, I hope, that when, with an open heart, you approach the words and actions of Jesus in a sentence or two from the Gospels, you experience that Christ is speaking directly to you in a way no one else knows, since God knows the depths of your heart. Such an experience is a highly personalized invitation from God who awaits your response; relationship, after all, requires two-way communication. My parting wish is that each one enters deeply into such relationship with God and celebrates it in community at Mass, our opportunity to offer together the purest act of praise to God for unbelievable Divine Love. Thank you again for all your goodness. May God bless you always, and again, Thank You for sharing your life and love with me. As soon as it became safe for Christians to worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked out. It was changed a few times over the years, and today s usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred years ago, although Anglicans and Byzantines have their own unique detours. Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then. Almost everyone begins at the Lion s Gate in the Muslim Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It s less than a quarter mile, but it threads its way through crowded markets with souvenir shops and fast-food snacks. There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations along the way. The exact spots are not known, but what matters is the pilgrim s unique ability to see even an ordinary road in a teeming city as something more than meets the eye. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S.
