I may not have had visions of sugar-plums because I didn t even know what they were, but I replaced them with all the great gifts and food I could conjure up in my mind in anticipation of Christmas

Maybe it is for peace in our marriages, in our families, in our churches, in our communities, in our country and, even, in the world.

3 Second Sunday of Advent Page 3 Dear Friends in Christ, FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR The classic poem by Clement Clarke Moore begins: Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. Many of us, as children, could enjoy hearing this poem over and over as, in our child s imagination, it seemed to come to life each year. I may not have had visions of sugar-plums because I didn t even know what they were, but I replaced them with all the great gifts and food I could conjure up in my mind in anticipation of Christmas morning. As adults, we may not dream about gifts appearing almost by magic under the tree, but we still have great longings. Maybe it is for peace in our marriages, in our families, in our churches, in our communities, in our country and, even, in the world. Maybe we are praying for healing for a loved one in sickness or in addiction. Maybe we long to be better persons that truly make the world a better place and to be a blessing to others. These kinds of longings are expressed in our Scripture readings for this Sunday by both the Prophet Baruch and the Gospel of Luke. They speak of lasting change that will be brought about by God s own hand. Not sugar-plums or gifts whose thrill last but a moment, rather, in the big scheme of things, all wrongs being made right. More loving than even the best of parents, our heavenly Father, does not want for us things that spoil over time; instead, those that bring lasting happiness and fulfillment. A Voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Look around most Catholic churches, and you will discover an image of John the Baptist, often in the old baptistery, or in a window near where the font is or was located. He has two feast days in the calendar: one commemorating his birth, and the other his death. There are only three nativities in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Baptist. John s birthday is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke s Gospel of the angel s announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Baptist s birth. Halfway to Christmas, his nativity gives ample reason for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea.
