3 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 REGULATIONS ON FASTING AND ABSTINENCE DURING LENT The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self-denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God s continued call to conversion and holiness. FASTING is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 years. On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be takes according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. ABSTINENCE from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older on Ash Wednesday and all of the Fridays of Lent. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. Fasting, almsgiving and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter. NEW GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP for anyone who has lost a loved one in the last two years A six week session moderated by Sr. Thérèse Carolan will meet beginning on Thursday, February 15th, at 1:30 PM. in Room #13. While there is no right or wrong way of dealing with the loss of a loved one, sharing with others who have experienced similar loss has proven effective in managing grief. With Ash Wednesday one of only two days on the liturgical calendar (the other being Good Friday) when fasting and abstinence are observed by Catholics, no dispensation from observance of these disciplines is being granted. Men's Wed Group / Emmaus Every diocese needs a robust Catholic Men's Ministry. Every parish needs an active Men's group. Every man needs a true brother in faith. One session, to be facilitated by our pastor, Fr. Gregg Tottle, will include a discussion of changes in the Church since Vatican II. Printed invitations are available at the church entrances. Exercise your faith and your limbs, too: Walk with fellow parishioners daily (except Sunday) after the 8 AM Mass over to the ORATORY and pray the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and, on Mondays and Saturdays, the Miraculous Medal Novena. International Labor Organization estimates 11.4 million women and girls and 9.5 million men and boys are trafficked globally, generating $150 billion annually (2/3 of this from forced sexual exploitation). It occurs in every city and state across our nation with Florida trafficking, sadly, ranking as third highest in the nation. The Diocese of St. Petersburg is seeking volunteers to be trained to lead Human Trafficking Awareness sessions, in English or Spanish, throughout our Diocese.
