We have been listening to Saint Mark s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John s Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the bread of life. Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements bread and wine into the Lord s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing. 4 THE CAPUCHIN FRANCISCAN WAY This Fall, we will embark on a parish and school journey to rediscover our Catholic identity here at OLA. The Capuchin Franciscan Way is a Eucharistic-centered lifestyle. It inspires families to walk the simple and joyful path of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi. In his original words, we do this by becoming God s prayer, His fraternity, and His minority in both attitude and service. As such, we are aligning all of our communications, including our bulletin to reflect these beautiful charisms or gifts given to us. This brings us closer to God and to each other. Prayer: Deepening Our Relationship w ith God Fraternity: Strengthening Com m unity/fam ily Bonds Minority: Hum bling Ourselves in Attitude and Service PRAYER FEAST DAY OF BLESSED SOLANUS CASEY Father Solanus Casey ( ), whom Pope Francis declared blessed last year, will be remembered on the first ever celebration of his feast day on July 30, This longtime Capuchin Detroit friar is only the second American-born man to be honored with such a distinction. Masses will be celebrated at 6:30 and 8am at OLA, and 11:30am at Marian Oaks Convent. THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Wednesday, August 15 is a Holy Day of Obligation this year. In addition to our regular Masses, additional Masses will be celebrated on August 14 at 7:30pm and on August 15 at 11:00am and 7:30pm. FRATERNITY SCHOOL OF RELIGION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The OLA School of Religion needs you! Volunteer to Teach! Be an amazing catechist. Two hour commitment per week. Your ongoing generosity has a tremendous impact supporting those in need right here in our neighborhood. The most common request is to help with groceries. SVdP also provides rent assistance. They help with PG&E expenses and provide vouchers to buy clothing or other household items from the SVdP stores. They also sponsor Back-to-School programs, and provide ongoing help with San Mateo County Jail Ministry and Catherine s Center. BROWN BAG SUNDAY Sunday, August 5 8:00 am in the Lower Hall Join other parishioners as we make brown bag lunches for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Parishioners of all ages are welcome to attend.
