Second Collection This Weekend Our Lady of Angels CAPUCHIN Franciscan THE INSIDE SHOWS In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the debris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they be as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' smallest speck-like flaws. And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus images, is true: What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh. By and by, the inside will show through. 4 PRAYER ASH WEDNESDAY Wednesday, March 6 Lent begins this week. Lent is a time when we reevaluate our lives; when we make sacrifices by acts of self-denial; when we are reconciled to God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation; and when we intensify our life of prayer by entering more fully into the celebration of the Eucharist. Please see the back of the bulletin for the Ash Wednesday Mass schedule. SEASON OF LENT To help make the season of Lent a very meaningful time of preparation and renewal, the following are provided: Daily Masses offered Monday Friday 6:25am, 8:00am and 5:30pm at OLA 11:30am at Marian Oaks Convent Rosary recited daily at 7:40am LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE Abstinence: Everyone 14 and older is bound to abstain from meat on ASH WEDNESDAY, the FRIDAYS of Lent, and GOOD FRIDAY. Fast: Everyone 18 and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast on ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY. On these two days, the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. MINORITY MILK FOR OUR MISSION Join us this Lent as we walk in solidarity with our Capuchin friars and the people they serve in the northern Mexico mission. OLA Parish and schools will participate in the Milk for the Mission Canister Program. Our 40-day Lenten journey asks us to: Pray, Fast, & Give Alms. You can do this for our Capuchin N. Mexico missions by Praying the Our Father daily for our friars and our northern Mexico brothers and sisters they minister to, Fasting from your daily pleasures, and Giving Alms by way of collecting change for milk in these canisters. With the money raised, OLA will send powdered milk to the mission for the friars to distribute to families in the community. Milk canisters will be handed out at all Masses the weekend of March 9th and 10th. SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND We welcome Fr. Pauly Madassery, our Capuchin brother from the St. Thomas Capuchin Province in Kerala, India, who is visiting us and preaching this weekend. He asks for our support in the second collection for the needs of the poor in his area including medical care for the poor patients, educational support for the children who live in slums, job opportunities and livelihood for unmarried women, and support for the rehab center for the mentally ill and homeless people.
