5 A Quarterly look at ourelve, from the inide out. 1.winter.18 Are You Leaving a Legacy? Why doen t the annual budget cover all our cot? Sometime there are hort term crie on the campu like a burt pipe or rental income that i late. The afety net i not that deep. A portion of the earning of the All Saint endowment fund are now budgeted into our church operation. Growing thi endowment, today valued at $7 million, i very important. I m too poor to make thi kind of gift! We encourage all level of planned gift. There i no requirement for the ize of a gift. It i the practice of making thi gift that give promie to the future of thi church. How do I make a gift? Many people have choen to leave the church a portion of their etate in their will. Other name All Saint a the beneficiary of an IRA account or an inurance policy. There are ome very imple way to accomplih a planned gift. We would be happy to anwer any quetion you have about thi kind of giving. What i the Cornertone Society? The Cornertone Society recognize anyone who ha made a planned gift to All Saint Church. Simply let u or Ellen Haye, All Saint Director of Development, know that you have made a planned gift and you will be lited a a member in the All Saint Day bulletin, included in annual gathering of the Cornertone Society and given a lapel pin that feature the beautiful All Saint rood beam cro. Sunday, March 4 i our firt Legacy Sunday where we recognize the value of leaving a legacy for All Saint. The point i not to toot our horn but to remind the parih how imple it i for EVERYONE to leave a legacy after they are gone. W By Woody and Sara Ann Vaughan Dear All Saint, we chair the Planned Giving Committee of All Saint. What i thi minitry? We are the cheerleader for gift made to the All Saint Endowment Fund. We encourage all people of the church to make a planned gift; deignate a gift to the church at the time of your death. Cornertone Q &A: Why hould I make a planned gift? Planned gift are the bedrock of the church. Ye, we all make an annual pledge to the church to cover operation and the annual budget. But that money doe not cover all the expene. It doe not leave a reerve to keep a 100 year old campu in top condition. It doe not leave fund for project that inpire new leaderhip.

6 (inide) page 2 Sade and Bill Fryer Sade and Bill Fryer have been at All Saint ince the 1970 and they joined the Cornertone Society when it wa formed in Bill come from a family that i very conciou about giving, Sade init, It in hi DNA to give money. He quoted after Chritma: you can give to Caear or you can give to God and let give to God! Bill add, True, it an eay deciion for me. I m involved in philanthropy at everal intitution and I know how important it i to ASK people to give. We were not from Atlanta and came into thi community of All Saint through friend and profeional colleague and we found the financial tructure olid at All Saint built on the gift of generation before u. It felt important to u to become part of that for our future generation. A Bradley Hale alway aid, We need to do our bit. Now we have 3 generation of Fryer at All Saint and a lot of our contemporarie who have been here ince the 1970, have thi too and that fun! I guarantee that making thi kind of gift will make you happy. We hope young parihioner will etablih themelve by making a planned gift. Sade chime in, I m in the deign field and our target audience i alway younger people. The ame i true of generoity; familie in their 30 and 40 are forming their relationhip at All Saint. A planned gift i an expreion of belief in the churche future. W Vance White Vance White wa chairing the 2003 All Saint annual canva at the ame time Clay Jackon wa etting up the Cornertone Society. I wa knee-deep in the financial working of the church that year how could I NOT join Cornertone?! It i alo clear to me that I am called by God to be generou and give back. I come from a family that tithe to the church. My dad i ucceful at evangelim and very committed to thi calling of church work. All Saint i an expenive church to run I m on the Building and Ground Committee now memberhip in mot of your mall traditional churche i decreaing and I don t ee how they are ucceful without endowment to help fund them. I m in the contruction indutry and we work with ome new churche. They are not being built for 100 year into the future. One new church I have een i inide an old K-Mart. Thee churche are the flavor of the day and their miniter are popular until they are not and then they pick up and move on. All Saint i different. We are inveted in it hitory and it irreplaceable hitoric home. It clear that hitory i one of the main factor in commitment to thi community. Look at Midtown Atlanta i growing around u Georgia Tech i larger than ever, we tare up at the Bank of America Tower and Amazon i conidering a move cloe by. What if we welcomed people here even day per week and not jut Sunday and Wedneday? Simon i a rock tar for evangelim we ang at the MARTA tation in December and we will be adding ign of welcome all around. Join Cornertone today we need you! W Imagine the poibilitie for All Saint provided by legacy giving. Join u in giving thank and learn how imple it i for anyone to leave a legacy after they are gone. 7 (inide) page 3 Lynn Randolph I remember viiting my aging parent in Peru, Indiana, and noticing that everal check they were writing were to the church. At their church I came upon a tained gla window with our family name on it. It truck me that thi wa a good way to give thank for being part of a church community. All Saint ha been very good to me. I don t have a large etate but I am making ure that a gift will come to the church that ay I wa here and thi place meant omething to me. It i not about having my name on anything. But for me making a planned gift i my way of aying thank you for being the caring body of people that you are. All of you have helped me and I am grateful for the opportunitie and the texture thi church ha brought to my life. W Valerie Nichol Valerie Nichol connected to the All Saint Refugee Minitrie in the It made ene to me. I aw an everwidening gap between thoe of u who have o much and thoe who arrive here with nothing. I built peronal relation-hip with familie new to the country. After getting to know Albert and Petronelle Rwiyereka they aked me to be a godmother to their on Stephane. I wa very touched by thi. Working with refugee allowed me to do omething beide oberve a problem. Now my huband Craig and I have our own children and our entire family engage in welcoming, undertanding and building friendhip that i tranformational for u. It in t a one-ided relationhip either we get back more than we give. Jut the imple act of haring tea with one of the new refugee familie or helping a new family hop for clothing at Thread inpire u. I joined the All Saint Cornertone Society in 2003 when the program wa jut beginning. I wanted to help continue All Saint legacy of refugee minitrie. I wanted to make a more permanent kind of gift to the church. The economic gap in the U.S. i expanding and I want generation of parihioner to engage member in opening the community wide. Our family ha been bleed and we are very thankful. W For more information about The Cornertone Society contact Woody Vaughan at Woody.vaughan@ hklaw.com. An Invitation for Spiritual Engagement During Lent By The Rev. Kimberly S. Jackon When I wa a college chaplain, I invited my tudent to take on a communal Lenten practice. The practice that they took on a a community reflected their particular tage of life; for intance, they once committed to doing all of their aigned reading for their clae (which wa incredibly good for their oul and grade)! By having a hared Lenten dicipline, my tudent were able to hold each other accountable to the practice. More importantly, they had a hared experience to talk and reflect about with their peer. One year, they committed to doing Morning Prayer each day. They weren t perfect in thi commitment, but it wa delightful to hear one tudent hare with another the reading that he d mied that morning. So thi Lent, I invite you to join in a hared piritual practice with the All Saint community. I encourage you to ign up to receive a Lenten meditation in your each morning (except on Sunday when we take a day off from Lent to celebrate a little Eater ). The meditation are written by member and friend of our parih, and each meditation offer a reflection on how God continue to hape u during thi eaon. Thee meditation provide a common text, image, or ound for our community to reflect upon each day, and to hare with thoe around u. Like the tudent that I erved at the Abalom Jone Epicopal Center, you likely won t be perfect in thi practice. You may mi a meditation or two. May you find comfort in knowing that the mediation are tored on the All Saint webite for later viewing. More importantly, may we each find a ene of community, belonging, and grace in knowing that we are all haring in thi piritual practice together. W Begin Ah Wedneday, February 14 allaintatlanta.org/lent2018 Subcribe online to receive daily meditation created by parihioner and clergy in your box each morning during Lent, or read the meditation on our webite.

8 (inide) page 4 Ak the Verger: Whence proceion? By Bruce Garner, Head Verger Proceion have been a part of religiou and ecular life for centurie, even millennia. The Ark of the Covenant wa moved in proceion. Our Jewih ibling proce the Torah in ynagogue and temple on a regular bai and particularly on certain holiday, uch a Simchat Torah. The acred croll are removed from the ark and proceed among the people. Jeu wa welcomed into Jerualem in a triumphant proceion which we commemorate every Palm Sunday. Jeu would later literally proce to the ite of Hi crucifixion. At it baic level, a proceion ha alway erved a the way to move omeone or ome thing from one location to another. Regarding our practice a a church, the proceion wa neceary in churche and cathedral of the Middle Age jut to get the altar party from the door of the church to the altar platform. There were no chair or pew, jut worhiper (and ometime a few critter) tanding around inide the building. One of the function of verger (or their predeceor) wa to lead thoe proceion and literally clear a path for the altar party. And ye, I am fairly certain that the tick wa ued to get folk out of the way. Sunday morning ervice, and mot ervice, begin with the opening proceion into the church, coniting of the verger, crucifer, torch bearer, the choir, one or more banner bearer, the reader and interceor, and another verger who lead the clergy and celebrant to their variou place. The proceion i led by a verger carrying a beadle a tick that could be ued to clear a path. The verger ymbolically clear a path, heralding the approach of the cro that follow immediately behind her or him; the ymbol of Chrit being brought into the church. It direct our attention to that entrance a we viually follow the cro up the aile. The proceional cro i placed in a holder where it remain for the duration of the ervice, and i turned and placed flat againt the wall to make it a inviible a poible. Multiple viible croe would ditract and draw attention away from the main cro on the altar or reredo or, in ome churche, hanging above it. During the Liturgy of the Word, another proceion take place; the Gopel Proceion. Thi follow one of the rubric of the Book of Common Prayer which tate that it i deirable that the Gopel be read from the midt of the people. In order to get the Gopeler to the midt of the people, we ue a proceion. The Gopel proceion conit of a verger who lead the proceion. (When incene i ued, the Thurifer who carrie the thurible of burning incene, i included.) An acolyte who ha the honor of holding the Gopel Book while the Gopel i read come next. At All Saint thi i uually the reponibility of the crucifer. The next come a pair of acolyte erving a torch bearer. Originally the light of thee torche lighted the Gopel book and often provided the light to read the paage aigned for the day. (Some churche ue a four poter Gopel proceion where there are four torche urrounding the Gopel book, further highlighting the importance of the Gopel.) The lat peron in thi proceion i the priet or deacon who will read the Gopel election for the day. We no longer include a proceional cro in the Gopel proceion. The focu of the Gopel proceion i the Gopel book and hence the Gopel. A cro would remove the focu from the purpoe of the proceion. Thi i in keeping with variou expert liturgit in the broader church and their reearch and intruction book. We alo have an offertory proceion in each ervice. Thi proceion highlight the importance of our offering of bread and wine a well a our offering of our time, talent and treaure to God a our obligation to return to God a portion of that with which we have been bleed. The offertory proceion mark the beginning of the Great Thankgiving portion of the ervice or the actual Ma itelf. Upon reaching the altar, the gift of bread, wine, and offering are elevated a they are offered to God. The final proceion for our ervice i the retiring or outgoing or cloing proceion. (There i no uch thing a a receional for our purpoe. We proce in and then we proce back out.) The cloing proceion i the revere of the opening proceion, however, it i our cutom for the reader and interceor not to proce back out. We alo do not include the Gopel book in the retiring proceion. At All Saint, we add an apect to the retiring proceion that I haven t een in other churche. We ak the congregation to turn and viually follow the cro back down the aile a we prepare to take the Gopel out into the world a follower of Jeu Chrit. Whence proceion? From a practical tandpoint: a way to get people and thing from one place to another. From a worhip tandpoint: a way to add to the pageantry of our praie and worhip of the God who created u, redeemed u and alway love u. W All Saint (inide)
