1 Volume 14, Issue 8 September 2016 What Will You be Wearing at Kanuga? This year s Kanuga chairs Mary Beth and Barckley Toole, with co-chairs Debbie Wilson and Jowell Thome, invite you to join in the fun at the 2016 annual Parish Retreat at Kanuga! This year we welcome The Rev. Lauren Winner, Assistant Professor of Christian Spirituality at Duke Divinity School. Lauren writes and lectures on Christian practice, the history of Christianity in America, and Jewish-Christian relations. Born to a Jewish father and a Southern Baptist mother, she was raised Jewish, converted to Orthodox Judaism in her freshman year at Columbia University, and then to Christianity while doing her Masters degree at Cambridge University. Lauren is an ordained Episcopal priest and the author of numerous books. Her 2014 book Wearing God: Clothing, Laughter, Fire, and Other Over-looked Ways of Meeting God, explores the notion of God as clothing, reflecting on how we are clothed with Christ or how God fits us like a garment. She analyzes how clothing functions culturally to shape our ideals and identify our community, and ruminates on how this new metaphor can function to create new possibilities for our lives. There are hundreds of metaphors for God, but the church only uses a few familiar images: creator, judge, savior, father. In Wearing God, Lauren gathers a number of lesserknown tropes, reflecting on how they work biblically and culturally, revealing how they can deepen our spiritual lives. Don t miss this great weekend of food and fellowship filled with favorite Kanuga activities from Friday night to Sunday morning. Sign up online now! Annual Parish Retreat at Kanuga Friday though Sunday, September 30 October 2 Kanuga Conference Center, Hendersonville, North Carolina For more information stop by the Parish Life table on Sunday mornings or Mary Beth or Barckley Toole at marybethtoole6@ yahoo.com. First timer, old timer, young, older, married, single, Kanuga has something for everyone! 2017 Annual Canvass: Connecting, Not Just Collecting The 2017 Annual Canvass is all about staying connected to All Saints during our transition in leadership. We are kicking off the Canvass with gatherings in five locations around Atlanta. The agenda at these events? Reconnecting with friends we may not have seen over the summer. Interim Rector Martha Sterne and Sr. Warden Ken Stewart will be in attendance with updates on the rector search. We encourage you to make new connections. If you didn t receive your E-Vite contact Ellen Hayes at ehayes@allsaintsatlanta.org. We look forward to seeing you there! All Saints is home for my family. It is our spiritual home where we feel connected to God s community. 25 years ago we came to All Saints and found an accepting, engaging, and intellectually-stimulating parish. Today we are in clergy transition but All Saints remains the deep well that it has been throughout its history. We are constantly inspired by former leaders of the church who led us to confront bigotry in the civil rights era, comfort and serve the parish through the AIDS crisis and most recently seek the full humanity of LGBT friends and families. Our rector search holds great promise for the future. We have so much to be grateful for at All Saints. Kristin and I have witnessed the spirit of generosity and thus feel compelled to support God s blessings through the annual canvass. Stewardship is the lifeblood of the church. Consider a generous pledge in the coming weeks to support our parish as we transition to the next chapter. God bless! <Jim The 2107 Annual Canvass kicks off September 18 Jim Howard is a native Atlantan and Kristin is from Tonsberg, Norway. Their three sons, Jake, Erik and Christopher have all been baptized and confirmed at All Saints. w w w. a l l s a i n t s a t l a n t a. o r g

8 634 West Peachtree Street NW Atlanta, Georgia Non-Profit Postage PAID Atlanta, GA Permit 84 TH E AL L SA I N T S MO N T H LY PAG E 8 Introducing The Rev. Kimberly Jackson! On Thursday, September 15, The Rev. Kimberly S. Jackson joins the staff at All Saints, as our newest Associate Rector. We can t wait to get to know her, so we asked her a few questions: How did you become an Episcopalian? Bishop Barbara Harris. While there are some other folks (including our bishop Rob Wright) who had a significant hand in bringing me from the Baptist tradition to here, Barbara Harris truly was my inspiration. The fact that she s Black, female, and a bishop let me know that the Episcopal Church might be willing to make space for me. She got me in the door, and after that, the liturgy of this great tradition carried me the rest of the way. Why the priesthood? I felt called to ministry when I was 8 years old. Seriously, I still have my 3rd grade essay that spells out all three of my dream in life. The first on the list was to be a recycler (in Cowpens, South Carolina in the early 90 s, recycling was a pretty new and fancy concept). I also wanted to be a teacher. But principally, I dreamed of becoming a pastor. Of course, I ve had some twists and turns in my vocational journey since that youthful declaration, but the same Holy Spirit that guided my 8 year-old self, is the same Holy Spirit that ordained me a priest in God s church. Learn more about The Rev. Kimberly Jackson this month on our website in Spotlight On. Beginning September 15, you may reach Kim by at kjackson@ allsaintsatlanta.org. The deadline for the October issue is day, September 8. Please make your submission via our website, at allsaintsatlanta.org/news-and-events/announcements/. Thank you!
