2 WORSHIP Attention Parishioners.. The Glove of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina is on display at our church this weekend, September 22nd and 23rd. There will be veneration after each Mass. The Spiritual Life Commission "Blessing of the Athletes" takes place this Sunday, September 23rd, at the 10:30a.m. Mass. Father will give a blessing to all athletes for the coming year and a medal of St. Sebastian, the patron saint of athletes. Athletes are invited to come in your uniforms. Springfield Diocesan Cultivating Unity Convocation Thursday, October 4th and Friday, October 5th, there will be NO Daily or Funeral Masses, as all of the priests of the Diocese will be in attendance. Also, we will be cleaning the carpets on Thursday and Friday, so the church will be closed for all activities on those two days. Thank you for your understanding. Note: We ask that you please pray for the success of this Convocation and for the spiritual renewal of the presbyterate of the Diocese of Springfield. Words from Padre Pio, Saint of Healing and Hope Pray, hope and don t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer. Prayer is the best weapon we have; it is the key to God s heart. You must speak to Jesus not only with your lips but with your heart. In fact, on certain occasions you should speak to Him only with your heart. He also said, Take good care of your health, because the health of the body is God s second gift. The first one is that of the soul. Prayer Loving God, graciously hear the prayers I present to You in Honor of Saint Pio, Your beloved servant who bore in his body the five wounds of Christ Crucified, so that I may receive help in my needs through the intercession of him whose life was so pleasing to You. You graced Padre Pio s life with the spirit of immense compassion, and many who sought his assistance were blessed with great miracles, especially the sick, the suffering and those in need of healing. Grant that through my prayers and heart-felt pleading, I, too, may deserve to experience the fulfillment of the urgent requests I place before You, through Christ, Our Lord. Amen Page 4

3 A Pets Blessing in Honor of St. Francis of Assisi will take place on the church yard after morning Mass this Saturday, October 6 th around 8:45a.m. Feel free to bring your pets of all shapes and sizes to get a blessing and a token of the blessing. They deserve a blessing for good health, too! Are you familiar with the Holy Name Prayer Line? It is a group of 30+ parishioners (called the Prayer Line Partners) who pray for anyone who is in need of prayers for any reason. It could be an illness, loss of a loved one, etc., or a special intention. We invite you to share your prayer needs by calling Ann at the rectory ( ). You don t even have to give us your name just who (first name only, or you can say a woman, a man, a parishioner) the group would pray for and a very brief reason (i.e., surgery, illness, special intention, etc.) for the request. We compile a daily list (Monday through Friday) and it to the partners who have s, and it is called in to those who do this by phone (first person calls the second, and so on). New partners always welcome. Please contact Ann at the rectory, , with your interest. 4 The OPEN PANTRY is in need of the following food items: Oatmeal or hot cereal, Peanut Butter, Canned meats and Spaghetti Sauce But please, we ask that you do not bring any: Perishables of any kind (bread, potatoes, fresh vegetables, etc.) Pick-ups are not done every week, so any items like this will go bad. Partially used/opened items Also, please check expiration dates. We cannot give them items that have expired. SERVICE Concerning Hospital Visits If someone in your family is in the hospital and you want to have Fr. David, Fr. Joyce or Sister Melinda visit, please call the rectory at and leave a message for either father or Sr. Melinda, (ext. 130). Unfortunately, a parishioner s name is not always on the daily list of Holy Name patients; so we ask that you give us a call with the information (name, which building, room #, etc.). This way you or your loved one will be assured of a visit. LOAVES AND FISHES On the first Monday of every month, members of our parish gather at South Congregational Church on Maple Street to serve a meal to the hungry of our city. We are sure you will find it to be a positive and rewarding experience, and it is so organized, it won t take a lot of your time. American Chop Suey is the meal we serve, and you are welcome to use your own recipe. If you can help with the cooking or serving, please call Ann at the rectory, , or if you decide to come and don t have time to call ahead, that s fine, too. Meals can either be dropped off between 4:15 and 4:30p.m., or stay and serve and you ll be on your way home in an hour. EDUCATION Religious education classes are in full swing! Registration forms for all grades (K-11) are still available at all entrances of the church and at the Rectory. Please note: Students attending Parochial School must register with the Religious Education Office and attend classes to receive the sacrament of First Communion or Confirmation. Confirmation - first meeting for parents and students will take place this Sunday, September 23 rd, at 5:00p.m. in the Church. Adult Education at The Gray House is offering one small group ESOL class at the Literacy/Beginner level on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Holy Name Social Center. Session I began on September 10 and goes through Wednesday, December 5, There are still spaces for students in this class, and The Gray House is also recruiting instructor assistants for this location. If you are interested in volunteering or being a student, please contact Aisha Mathews, Education Director at Education@GrayHouse.org or We still have space for students and volunteer instructor assistants for day classes at The Gray House as well Page 6

5 HOLY NAME EVENTS Attention Crafters.. The Holy Name Annual Christmas Bazaar continues! This year s date is Saturday, November 17, 2018, 10:00a.m. until 4:00p.m. As always, this wonderful fair takes place at our Social Center. Crafters applications are now being accepted. Please call Peggy Pellerin at for applications and information. Again there will be a Treasures Table, for new or fairly new items that you have at home that you have never used, don t need/plan to use, and that you would like to donate. If you would like to participate in this year s bazaar, we are very much in need of: VENDORS and VOLUNTEERS!! (Please call Peggy at A.S.A.P.!) 1) Raffle Prizes - Donated raffle prizes will be grouped together and put into themed baskets, such as a Candle basket, Children s basket, Beauty basket, etc. 2) Children s Books (please, excellent condition only) and D.V.D.s If you have an item or items you would like to donate as raffle prizes or for the Treasures Table (which includes items for children), please bring to the Sacristy in a bag marked for Peggy Pellerin. Your support is very much appreciated. We can all work together to make this the best bazaar ever!! Once again we ll be having the Holiday Bazaar Raffle First Prize is a Smart Flat Screen TV - Second Prize is a Tablet Third Prize is a $100 Gift Card to Holyoke Mall Holy Name Children s Choir begins a New Season Our Children s Choir is in need of many new members. Several are leaving as Teenagers. Please consider your child up to age 12 as a potential member. We practice twice monthly and sing once each month. Our First Practice was on Friday, September 21 s.. If you missed it and want to join, our Second Practice will take place on Friday, September 28 th at 6:30p.m. in the church. We will sing at the 10:30a.m. Mass on September 30 th. Hope to see you all there. Tom Veto ( ) OTHER EVENTS & OPPORTUNITIES About the Diaconate Foundations Series Seminar Are you curious about deacons? Did you know there were some pretty famous deacons like St. Francis? As the Church celebrates the 50 th Anniversary of the Diaconate in the United States, we are offering a seminar about the diaconate explaining what a deacon is; where the role came from; and what deacons do in the modern Church. This seminar will be held on a Saturday and will consist of two parts. The first part describes the diaconate and answers your questions. After a break, part two will explore the diaconate in our diocese and discuss the process entering discernment and formation for the diaconate. All are welcome to attend both parts of the day. Men considering the diaconate should, with their wives, attend the full seminar. We ll have snacks and drinks. You may want to bring a lunch. This seminar will be held on a Saturday from 10:00 am 2:00 pm and will be offered three times at different locations: St. Ann s in Lennox on September 29; St. John Cantius Church: 10 Hawley Street, Northampton on October 6; and Mary, Mother of Hope in Springfield on October 20. The principal instructor will be Deacon Tom Lynch. He will be joined by members of the diaconate formation board and area deacons. Sacred Heart Church, 1065 Springfield Street, Feeding Hills; will hold a Holy Mass and Healing Service on Tuesday October 2 nd at 6:30Pm, Reconciliation and Counseling will be available from 3 6 pm. Fr. Kisito is from the Archdiocese of the Benin Republic in Africa and will officiate. He has been involved in the Healing and Deliverance Ministry in Africa as well as in Europe for many years. He will do a teaching on Angels and will also have The Relic of the Holy Cross for veneration. You may bring Kosher coarse Salt and/or a good grade Olive Oil for Fr. Kisito to bless; please put your name on the bottom of the containers. This is a wonderful opportunity for healing, for you, a family member or friend. Everyone is encouraged to bring baked goods to be sold at the dinner as Pro-Life of Pioneer Valley will get the total profits from this.
