The man who cannot laugh at himself is in the grip of pride, and the man who can laugh at himself has at least humility. (William Barclay) FLASHBACK ON HISTORY IN N.J At seven o clock on the morning of July 11, 1804 a duel occurred in Weehawken, New Jersey between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. The two men had been bitter political opponents for years and ultimately both were marked by tragedy. After the duel occurred Alexander Hamilton died the next day. However, Aaron Burr never recovered. He said: I should have known the world was big enough for Hamilton and me. Stephen, Josephine and the volunteers for putting this beautiful sendoff together. So many of you have given me gifts with no return addresses on them, so may I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity and well wishes. I have enjoyed my 3 years and 9 months here at Church and this parish and its community of faithful will have a special place in my heart. I am not perfect by any stretch but I hope that I have touched you spiritually and have played a part in deepening your faith. As I move on to Corpus Christi Parish in Willingboro as administrator, I ask that we continue to pray for each other. Once I have settled in, I will forward my parish address. Again, thank you and may the Lord always continue to bless you. Yours in Christ, Father John

6 Page 7 The Life of Jesus John 7:30-53 DISSENSION CONCERNING JESUS Many of the people impressed by the miracles of Jesus, were accepting Him as the Messiah, but their leaders sent agents to seize Him. However, the time for Him to be delivered up had not yet arrived. Yet a little while I am with thee, and then I go to Him who sent Me. You will seek Me and will not find Me, and where I am you cannot come. On the last day of the feast Jesus stood and cried out: If anyone thirst, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture says, From within him there shall flow rivers of living waters. The people were moved by His words. Some acclaimed Him as the Prophet and others said: This is the Christ. Still others were skeptical saying: Can the Christ come from Galilee? Does not the Scripture say that it is of the offspring of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived, that the Christ is to come? While the people argued, some sided with the ruffians who had been sent to arrest him, but they did not dare to seize Him. Thus the deputies of the Pharisees came back empty handed. They admitted that they, too, had been impressed by the words of Jesus and the Pharisees said, Have you also been led astray? Has any one of the rulers believed in Him, or any of the Pharisees? This crowd which does not know the Law is accursed. One of the members of the Pharisees council was a man called Nicodemus. He was impressed by Jesus in the early days of His ministry, and had come to Him secretly for instruction. Nicodemus opposed his unscrupulous fellows and said, Does our Law judge a man unless it first gives him a hearing and know what he does? The Pharisees would not even consider the justness of his question. Art thou also a Galilean? they asked. Search the Scriptures and see that out of Galilee arises no prophet. Thereupon the meeting broke up, and the members returned to their homes. Summary: When Nicodemus pointed out that Jesus should at least get a hearing before being condemned, the Pharisees answered, with unbounded presumption and snobbishness. They said, He could not be a prophet because He was from Galilee.: The Life of Christ Catholic Press Almighty God, + You have called us to hear and proclaim Your Word with our lives. Have mercy on our weakness. + You have entrusted to us the work of the Gospel in every circumstance of life. Have mercy on our infidelities. +You have promised eternal life to us who labor under the burden of mortality. Have mercy on our struggle to believe and trust in Your power. The Magnificat Lord, strengthen our hearts.

7 Page 8 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives. July 10 St. Apollinaris July 10 St. Ulric, Bishop July 11 St. Benedict, Abbot July 12 St. John Gualbert, Abbot July 13 St. Henry II, Emperor July 14 St. Camillus De Lellis, Priest July 14 St. Kateri Tekakwitha July 15 St. Bonaventure, Bishop July 16 Our Lady of Mount Carmel July 16 St. Mary Magdalen Postel SAINT BONAVENTURE Bishop, Cardinal & Doctor of the Church Born Giovanni difidanza, he took the name Bonaventure when he joined the Franciscan Order. He went to Paris, studied theology and then became a teacher. Years later, Bonaventure took over the Franciscan school in Paris and four years later he was head of the entire Order. The Order faced a crisis, in that it was growing so quickly that it was becoming disorganized. It was also a split between monks who called for a life of poverty as Francis had and others believed the Franciscans could be part of the material world. He maintained his position by taking a middle path. Bonaventure lived a simple, pious life and was a respected theologian. He wanted Christians to purify their souls through prayer and right behavior. Bonaventure believed that prayer could bring an ecstatic bond between mankind and God. When messengers from Pope Gregory X brought Bonaventure the news of his new position as Cardinal Bishop he actually had them wait until he finished washing the friary s dishes. Again trying to reconcile differing spiritual views he died at the age of fifty-three. ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHA Lily of the Mohawks Kateri Tekakwitha the Lily of the Mohawks was born to a Mohawk father and a Christian Algonquin mother in a village in upstate New York. An epidemic of small pox deprived her of her parents but spared her although she had been stricken. Even after her recovery the usual disfigurement and weakening of her eyes remained. Shortly after her baptism at the age of twenty, she moved to the St. Francis Xavier mission near Montreal. It was said that she knew only two paths to the chapel and to her work. Kateri lived by the motto: Who will teach me what is most pleasing to God, that I may do it. The Jesuit priests of the mission marveled at her deep prayer life, purity and the desire for mortification. Kateri died at the age of twenty-five and was canonized in ST. CAMILLUS De LELLIS Patron of Hospitals Camillus was born in the Abruzzi region of Italy. He lost his mother at a young age and suffered neglect from his father, a soldier. After his own military career was cut short by a leg injury, he underwent a conversion. He later went to Rome and entered the Hospital of Incurables and after some time past, Camillus was appointed its administrator. Having been ordained a priest, he laid the foundation of the Congregation of Regular Clerics to administer to the sick. Camillus had obstacles to encounter but triumphed over them. Henceforth his life was entirely devoted to the sick and dying and after his death his work was continued by the Order he had founded. Camillus was endowed by God with the spirit of prophecy.

8 Page 9 Our Faith OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL This feast instituted in the fourteenth century by the Carmelite Order commemorates the anniversary of the day in 1251 when the Blessed Mother gave the brown scapular to Saint Simon Stock. The scapular is an external sign of the filial relationship established between the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother and Queen of Mount Carmel and the faithful who entrust themselves totally to her protection. For those who are mindful of the primacy of the spiritual life and the need for prayer. The Blessed Mother Mary watches unceasingly with a mother s loving care over the brethren of her Son and lights us along our pilgrim way to the Mount of Your Glory. It is our beacon of comfort, and the embodiment of all our hopes as members of the Church. (Magnificat - July 2015) Intercessions: That those who wear the Scapular may be clothed in Christ by the grace of the Holy Spirit. That those who wear the Scapular may live their baptismal vow to be clothed in Christ. That those who wear the Scapular may be living members of the family of Carmel by their prayers, sacrifices and good works. That those who wear the Scapular may be an extension of the love which Jesus had for His Mother. That those who wear the Scapular may clothe themselves with the virtues of the most pure Blessed Mother, listen to the Word of God and live it daily. That those who wear the Scapular may lead their lives that they will always be ready to enter into the assembly of saints.
