5 Page 6 The Life of Jesus Matthew 11:25-30 ACT OF DEDICATION OF THE HUMAN RACE TO JESUS CHRIST KING At that time Jesus exclaimed: "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him." "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light." ONE MINUTE MEDITATIONS Last Things Does your soul not burn with the desire to make your Father God happy when he has to judge you? - St. Josemaria Escriva, The Way #646 Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before You. We are Yours, and Yours we wish to be; but to be more surely united with You, behold, each one of us freely consecrates himself today to Your Most Sacred Heart. Many indeed have never known You; many, too, despising Your precepts, have rejected You. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to Your Sacred Heart. Be King, O Lord, not only the faithful who have never forsaken You, but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned You; grant that they may quickly return to their Father s house, lest they die of wretchedness and hunger. Be King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions, or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of truth and the unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd. Grant, O Lord, to Your Church assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give tranquility of order to all nations; make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry: Praise to the divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to it be glory and honor for ever. Amen.

6 Page 7 Our Faith WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PRIEST VESTMENTS? Have you ever wondered why the priest wears what he does? In this infographic you will find the symbolism behind each part of the liturgical vestments and the beautiful prayers that the priest says while vesting to preside over the sacraments. THE AMICE THE ALB Defends against the temptations of the devil and symbolizes the moderation of the words. Lord, set the helmet of salvation on my head to fend off all the assaults of the devil. (Ephesians 6:17) The alb is white, symbolizing the purity of heart that the priest must bring to the altar. Make me white, O Lord and cleanse my heart; that being made white in the Blood of the Lamb I may deserve an eternal reward. THE CINCTURE The cincture symbolizes the virtue of purity. Gird me, O Lord, with the cincture of purity, and quench in my heart the fire of concupiscence, that the virtue of continence and chastity may abide in me. THE STOLE THE CHASUBLE LITURGICAL COLORS The chasuble is the liturgical garment that has come to characterize above all the Eucharistic celebration. Different colors are used, depending on the liturgical season and the feasts and celebrations of the Church. GREEN Ordinary Time in the liturgical calendar. -Signifies hope. The stole is symbolic of the priestly power or authority. Lord, restore the stole of immortality, which I lost through the collusion of our first parents, and, unworthy as I am to approach Thy sacred mysteries, may I yet gain eternal joy. Worn above all the other vestments, it symbolizes the virtue of charity. O Lord, who has said, My yoke is sweet and My burden light, grant that I may so carry it as to merit Thy grace. RED Passion (Palm) Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost Sunday, Feasts of the Apostles and martyrs. -Signifies the fire of charity and blood shed for Christ. GOLD OR WHITE Feasts of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary, and saints who were not martyred. -Glory, joy, innocence, and purity of soul. ROSE Third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday) and Fourth Sunday of Lent (Laetare Sunday). -Joy and love. VIOLET Advent and Lent, also in Requiem Masses. -Signifies humility and penitence. (

7 Page 8 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: July 9 St. Veronica Giuliani, Virgin St. Augustine Zhao Rong & Companions July 10 St. Ulric, Bishop of Augsburg July 11 St. Benedict, Abbot July 12 St. John Gualbert, Abbot Sts. John Jones & John Wall, Priests July 13 St. Henry II, Emperor July 14 St. Camillus DeLellis, Priest St. Kateri Tekakwitha July 15 St. Bonaventure, Bishop & Doctor of the Church ST. BENEDICT Abbot The Patriarch of Western monasticism was born at Nursia, in central Italy, about 480. In his youth, seeing the corruption of the world, he left home to live a hermit s life of penance and prayer in a cave in the mountains of Subiaco, near Rome, where he was instructed in Christian asceticism by St. Romanus, a Solitary of the vicinity. His reputation for sanctity gathered a large number of disciples around him, for whom he erected monasteries in which they lived a community life under a prescribed rule. In the year 529, he left Subiaco for Monte Cassino, and there founded the great Abbey which became the center of religious life in Europe. The principles of the Rule written by St. Benedict became the basis of religious life for all Western religious orders and congregations after his time. It shows the way to religious perfection by the practice of self-conquest, mortification, humility, obedience, prayer, silence, retirement, and detachment from the world and its cares. St. Scholastica, the sister of St. Benedict, was the first Benedictine nun. She presided over a monastery of nuns near Monte Cassino. St. Benedict died on March 21st, 543, as he stood before the altar of Monte Cassino immediately after receiving Holy Communion. St. Benedict is the patron saint of kidney disease, monks and poisoning. ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHA The blood of martyrs is the seed of saints. Nine years after the Jesuits Isaac Jogues and John de Brébeuf were tomahawked by Iroquois warriors, a baby girl was born in 1656 near the place of their martyrdom in Auriesville, New York. Her mother was a Christian Algonquin, taken captive by the Iroquois and given as wife to the chief of the Mohawk clan, the boldest and fiercest of the Five Nations. When she was four, Tekakwitha lost her parents and little brother in a smallpox epidemic that left her disfigured and half blind. She was adopted by an uncle, who succeeded her father as chief. He hated the coming of the Blackrobes Jesuit missionaries but could do nothing to them because a peace treaty with the French required their presence in villages with Christian captives. She was moved by the words of three Blackrobes who lodged with her uncle, but fear of him kept her from seeking instruction. Tekakwitha refused to marry a Mohawk brave, and at 19 finally got the courage to take the step of converting. She was baptized with the name Kateri Catherine on Easter Sunday. Now she would be treated as a slave. She would not work on Sunday, so Kateri received no food that day. Her life in grace grew rapidly. She told a missionary that she often meditated on the great dignity of being baptized. She was powerfully moved by God s love for human beings and saw the dignity of each of her people. She was always in danger, for her conversion and holy life created great opposition. On the advice of a priest, Kateri stole away one night and began a 200-mile walking journey to a Christian Indian village at Sault St. Louis, near Montreal. For three years she grew in holiness under the direction of a priest and an older Iroquois woman, giving herself totally to God in long hours of prayer, in charity, and in strenuous penance. At 23, Kateri took a vow of virginity, an unprecedented act for an Indian woman whose future depended on being married. Her dedication to virginity was instinctive: Kateri did not know about religious life for women until she visited Montreal. Inspired by this, she and two friends wanted to start a community, but the local priest dissuaded her. She humbly accepted an ordinary life. She practiced extremely severe fasting as penance for the conversion of her nation. Kateri Tekakwitha died the afternoon before Holy Thursday on April 17th, Witnesses said that her emaciated face changed color and became like that of a healthy child. The lines of suffering, even the pockmarks, disappeared and the touch of a smile came upon her lips. She was beatified in 1980 and canonized in 2012.

Most of the people were very generous in telling the new pastor how they liked his homily, except for one man who said, That was a very dull and boring homily, pastor.. In a few minutes the same man appeared again in the line and said, I didn't think you prepared at all for your homily, pastor. Once again, the man appeared, this time muttering, You really blew it. You didn't have a thing to say, pastor. Finally, the pastor could stand it no longer. He went over to one of the deacons and inquired about the man. Oh, don t let that guy bother you, said the deacon. All he does is go around repeating whatever he hears other people saying. Laughter has something in it in common with the ancient winds of faith and inspiration; it unfreezes pride and unwinds secrecy; it makes men forget themselves in the presence of something greater than themselves; something that they cannot resist.
