4 2018 ANNUAL BISHOP S APPEAL UPDATE Thank you for supporting the Bishop's Annual Appeal in the past and in this 2018 Campaign! Our goals for this year are: IHM $37824 and Holy Rosary $ So far our results are: IHM $21720, 57.42% and Holy Rosary $9355, 44.52%. Williston and Richmond Seniors Celebration - June 28 All Williston and Richmond Seniors, age 55 and above, are invited to a lasagna meal, catered by Bove's, on June 28 at IHM. There are two seatings, noon and 5:00 PM. Entertainment, door prizes, and other surprises! The meals are compliments of IHM as a thank you to our Seniors. Reservations are required by signing up at IHM or OLHR, by phone at or at pamk@together.net. We encourage you to consider reserving the noon seating, as the 5:00 seating fills quickly. ATTENTION IHM PARISHIONERS Near the shrine there is a pond. We need to find someone who is willing to keep it clean or we will be filling it in. JUNE 25 Daughters of 6:30 PM topic: John the Baptist 28 Celebration for Williston & Richmond IHM JULY 8 Family Mass and BB at St Anne s Shrine Worldwide Marriage Encounter Allow God to give you grace in abundance and transform your marriage relationship by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next Weekend is Jul 6-8, 2018 in Manchester, CT. For more information, call Gary & Lynn Root at or visit them at St. Anne's Shrine St. Anne's outdoor shrine on the shores of Lake Champlain is open for the season, complete with all new, custom made pews. Mass times are Saturday at 7:00 PM, Sunday at 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM, weekdays at 11:15 AM. Bishop Coyne will celebrate a special Mass for families on July 8 at 12:15 PM, followed by a BBQ on the Shrine grounds. This is a beautiful outdoor Mass for families. If you have never been to the Shrine, this Mass is a perfect opportunity to bring your family (and your swimsuits!). The Summer Reflection Series will be held on Wednesdays in July and August. The previous weekend is the Nativity of John the Baptist so we will be discussing him. All women are welcome and no preparation is necessary. HEALING SERVICE Father Harlow would like everyone to know that the healing service on July 1 is cancelled. We welcome Finnigan Wilson, Wren Hayes, and Milo Hayes who were baptized at IHM on June 10 and 11. Page 4

JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the "precursor" of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John's basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John's legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: "You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory" (Isaiah 49:3). DO YOU FEEL CALLED TO PRAY FOR OUR NEIGHBORS IN NEED? One of the most powerful ways to love one s neighbor is through intercessory prayer. Joseph s House, a Catholic outreach center sponsored by parishes in the greater Burlington area, is starting a prayer ministry for the individuals and families it serves. The mission of Joseph s House is to live out the Gospel call of Jesus Christ by offering support, compassion, and financial assistance to those in need. We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three "nativity" feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today's birth of the Baptist. Today's date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child's advent, but of Elizabeth's child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting "St. John's fires" in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist's own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John.
