1 THE HERALD Christ Church Episcopal Parish Newsletter March/April 2018 Member Spotlight: Ge ng to know Dorothea Beckwith Vol. 19, No. 3 I interviewed Dorothea Beckwith, a long me member of Christ Church, in celebra on of the 65th Anniversary of Christ Church. Wri en by Chelsea Paxton Dorothea joined Christ Church in 1957 with her husband and four children a er they moved to the area from Canada. Christ Church was the only Anglican/ Episcopal church in the area at the me, and that is what drew Dorothea and her family to start a ending Christ Church. Dorothea quickly became involved in the Altar Guild and eventually became the Directress. She was also the Wedding Coordinator and worked closely with brides to coordinate flowers, music, and other details of their weddings. In those days, Christ Church had about 25 weddings annually! Dorothea said that the beau ful church building a racted many brides to have their weddings at Christ Church. Dorothea also enjoyed working with an Evangelism group, where she would collect the pew cards that visitors had filled out and she would call them to gather more informa on, invite them back to worship, and ask if she could visit them. Dorothea, along with another parishioner or two, would visit new families on Wednesday evenings for about an hour or so. Dorothea and other lay members on the Evangelism group were well trained and a ended workshops before making these house visits. At the end of each visit, Dorothea and her group would pray with the family, and made sure to include the names of the children in the household in their prayers. Later, Dorothea became a trained Stephen Minister. She is currently a Lector & Eucharis c Minister and subs tute volunteer in the Parish Office. When I asked Dorothea about her favorite memory at Christ Church, she said that she enjoyed the Evangelism dinner or luncheon, where the members of the Evangelism group would have a meal with new families. I asked Dorothea about her hopes for Christ Church for the next 65 years, and she said, That we all come together as a happy, peaceful, loving family. I hope and pray for that, that we come together as a peaceful, loving, community Marks the 65th Anniversary of Christ Church There is much to celebrate and plan for the 65th Anniversary. A planning commi ee met on February 2nd. The planning commi ee includes: The Rev. Alison Schultz, Terry Crawford, Liz Perkins, Lynn Vannier, Susie Coffman, Julie Mankin, and Chris Sheik. 3 HOLY WEEK...COME & SEE from John 1:43-51 PALM SUNDAY: THE PASSION OF OUR LORD As we look toward Holy Week, a wealth of services is offered which culminate our Lenten observance and lead us toward the great celebra on of the Resurrec on of Christ at Easter. On Palm Sunday, March 25, we gather in the Memorial Garden at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and on the front lawn at 10 a.m. there we begin the service with the Liturgy of the Palms as we remember Christ s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. A er processing into the Nave, led by choir and brass, our celebra on soon turns solemn as we par cipate in the narrated Gospel lesson, retelling the events leading up to the Crucifixion. Then, during Holy Week, services of Holy Eucharist are offered at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. THE TRIDUUM Lent ends late in the a ernoon on Maundy Thursday, March 29 and the church enters the Paschal Triduum. The Pascal Triduum is a separate season during Holy Week. This three day observance begins on the evening of Maundy Thursday and ends on Saturday evening with the Easter Vigil. The ceremonies of this special season celebrate the death and resurrec on of our Lord. On Maundy Thursday comes an important observance of God s interven on in our lives. Marking the beginning of the Triduum (three days), this day s name comes from the La n mandatum, or command, and marks our Lord s celebra on of the Passover by giving us a new commandment: As I have loved you, you should also love one another. (John 13:34). If the first Passover freed the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt, so this celebra on of the first Eucharist begins the three day period that marks our freedom from death. A er the ceremonial foot washing and stripping of the altar, we move into Good Friday, the commemora on of our Lord s crucifixion. We call it good because we know how the story turns out, but thinking about what Christ suffered on the cross and walking this painful way with Christ helps us appreciate the joy of the Resurrec on. Night Watch and Vigil: Come and rest for an hour or two in Magginis Chapel star ng Thursday at 9pm thru 12 noon on Friday. Sign up today by calling or stopping by the Church office. Holy Saturday is a me for reflec ng upon Jesus death and burial, a somber calm a er the storm and before the Easter sunrise. In Jesus me the day began at nigh all, so our Easter celebra on begins with the Easter Vigil on Saturday night at 7:38 p.m. and con nues through four services on Easter Day. We need to enter these holy days with a renewed sense of being one with Christ through his death and resurrec on. The worship services of these three days involve the common prayer of the whole Chris an community. By keeping these days and worshiping together we are molded into a Chris an community. These days make us Chris an; they make us a church. It's only by engaging fully with the events of the Triduum that we can truly experience the joy of Easter. We encourage all to join us and the 3 whole community of faith around the world as we celebrate the great liturgies of Holy Week again this year. "God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him." John 3:17 Walking the Sta ons of the Cross A couple months ago, three of our youth took on the project of capturing their interpreta on of the 14 Sta ons of the Cross. Each picture reflects the agonizing moments Jesus endured, and the people he encountered on his journey to the cross. We invite you to come and walk the Sta ons of the Cross in Magginis Chapel, open Monday Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm during Holy Week. Special thanks to the youth who worked on this project: Charlie Howell, Tanner Frinell and Ellen Dierckes.

4 March for Our Lives The March for Our Lives is a planned demonstra on, scheduled to take place on March 24, 2018, in Washington, D.C. and throughout the United States. Student organizers are planning the march in collabora on with the nonprofit organiza on Everytown for Gun Safety, following the Stoneman Douglas High School shoo ng, widely reported in the media as being the pping point for gun control legisla on. Following the lead of our Bishop, Michael Hanley, we will be par cipa ng in the March For Our Lives in Portland as part of our commitment to Gospel jus ce in our world. Please join us on Saturday, March 24, 10:00 AM at: 431 SW Madison St, Portland, OR More details about our mee ng plans will be coming soon. So what choices must we make, given our limited number each day, to change ourselves and our world? Choices, Choices, Choices Every day we are faced with choices. In his 2014 book The Organized Mind, author Daniel Levi n writes that each day our brains are only capable of making a certain number of decisions. Big or small, a er a while our minds become less able to process informa on in a healthy way. This means that the messages and informa on we take into our brain is important, and how we expend our mental energy is part of what builds our reality. Recently we have been given new opportuni es to decide who we want to be and how we want to live as Chris ans in rela on to important events happening in our country, and as we celebrate Holy Week and Easter we must look again at what choices our faith expects from us. The central message of the resurrec on is that death does not have dominion over us any longer that fear and hopelessness have been overcome and that we are called to live a resurrec on life. One of the major issues facing our country is how we will respond to violence, and more par cularly gun violence in our society. It is beyond clear that the God of life and the Prince of Peace weep at our love affair with instruments of death, be it a pistol, AR 15, warplane, or nuclear warhead. While we may make certain compromises for the military and police, in an effort to keep our society in order and safe, there can be no doubt that this is not a society grounded in the new life of Jesus Christ, and we are called to live in that new life. We must overcome fear and come out of the tomb, into resurrec on light. So what choices must we make, given our limited number each day, to change ourselves and our world? First, we must choose love. Choosing love means trying to understand others and showing them mercy, trying to serve and care for others in a way that brings them wholeness, and trying to be generous to others in a way the leads to the fullness of life. Secondly, we must live and act in determined humility. This is the humility that leads us to reach out to others, to share who we are, without thinking that we are all that there is. None of us has all the answers, but all of us have something to share. Lastly, we must cul vate hope. Cul va ng hope does not mean that we hide from difficult conversa ons, or try and put a posi ve spin on obviously nega ve and hur ul things. It means that we believe in a world that we cannot yet see and that each day we take concrete steps to transform our world into the one we want and not the one we have. As we celebrate the resurrec on of our Savior, remember that God would not let His love be destroyed, and has pointed us in the direc on of life through the promise of everlas ng life. Live everyday humbly in that love and hope. Peace in Christ, Jeremy+ Rector at Christ Church 4
