We are so grateful to all of the people who have worked hard to get Sunday School underway, help with worship and church opera ons, contributed me and fleas or baked goods to the flea market, contributed to and par cipated in the quarter auc on to benefit our summer Reading Camp, and... Bap sms on All Saints Day I wanted to remind you that we will be holding the Sacrament of Holy Bap sm at the 10:30 AM service on All Saints Day, which will be celebrated on Nov. 5 th this year. We have at least one baby, so if you or your child are also interested in being bap zed, please contact me at the office. There is a planning workshop that precedes the day of bap sm (actually, it s pre y fun), and that will take place either on Saturday morning, October 28 or Sunday a ernoon, Oct 29. Bap sm is important not just for the person receiving the sacrament, but also for the whole community. It is a me when we pledge our support to the new member of the Body of Christ, we affirm our own bap smal vows, and it is a truly holy thing we do to build Chris an community. 2 (Con nued from page 1) Discussion Forum As you already know, we have begun holding a discussion forum at 9:00 AM between the two services in the vestry room. The topics for the first two weeks in October: Oct 1 What dis nguishes the Episcopal Denomina on from other Chris an denomina ons? Oct 8 Liturgical Seasons (e.g., Advent, Lent, etc.): what are they? Why do we have them? How do they affect our personal and community worship? Oct 15 What s money got to do with it? How we make a budget, how we spend your money, and your chance to ask ques ons about St. Alban s finances as we kick off stewardship season. Oct 22 Medita on: how to do it and why we do it! Oct 29 Sacraments: November 5 we celebrate Holy Bap sm, so we will discuss the other sacraments in The Episcopal Church. What are they for? What do they mean for you? St. Alban s Ladies Guild Report Harvest Bazaar and Turkey Dinner scheduled for November 11. With the Harvest Bazaar coming up, many contribu ons are needed to make the event successful. Any handmade cra s made by parishioners, family or friends will be much appreciated. Do you knit, crochet, paint or do woodwork? If so, would you please think about doing something for the Nov. 11th event? Thanks so much for sharing your talents. Fall Flea Market was a Success! The annual fall flea market was held on Saturday, Sept. 9, The event was a whopping success. The number of requests for tables almost outnumbered the number of tables available. However, because of the quick thinking of the St. Alban ladies and gentlemen involved, all worked out well. The weather was perfect and helped to bring out a really big crowd. Wonderful baked goods were available for purchase, as well as hot dogs and soda and of course, lots of terrific flea items. Many, many thanks to all the people who generously contributed their me and talents to make this event, one of the most successful ever. We Haven t Lost Our Marbles but Can You Help? Does anyone in the congrega on have knowledge about marbles? Some vintage ones were located and knowledge about them would be helpful before they are sold for the benefit of our church. 3 October Concerts with Paula Maust Friday, Oct. 6 6:30 p.m. Griswold Hall Peabody Conservatory 1 E. Mt. Vernon Place Bal more, MD Paula will present her doctoral chamber music featuring works by J.S. Bach, Franz Xaver Richter, Giacomo Carissimi, and Julie Pinel. She will be joined by Sarah Lynn, baroque flute; Grace Srinivasan, soprano; and Jamie Gallupe, baroque cello. Admission is free! But They Are at Peace: Music for the Feast of All Souls Musica Spira is a group that Paula co-founded with soprano Grace Srinivasan last year. Whether through the communal singing of cherished songs or the composi on of a new work to honor the deceased, music s transcendent and healing capaci es have been used for centuries to commemorate those who have died and to comfort those who mourn. On the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reforma on, we recall the famed 16th-century German theologian Mar n Luther who wrote extensively about the connec on between music and the divine. Luther s ideas influenced and inspired future genera ons of composers, including Heinrich Schütz and J.S. Bach. But They Are At Peace: Music for the Feast of All Souls features Schütz s Musicalische Exequien (German burial mass) and Bach s Jesu, meine Freude (Jesus, my Joy), which will be performed by a chamber choir of eight voices and organ. Join Musica Spira on a sublime journey through 17th and 18th-century Germany as we explore music s ability to connect us to both the reali es of earthly life and the mysteries of the divine. 4 Environmental Ministry at St. Alban s On a beau ful Saturday morning, members of the Salva on Army Boys and Girls Club, icarre Founda on, and New Kingdom Faith Chris an Church joined with St. Alban s to plant a na ve Maryland black gum tree and three holly shrubs (not the prickly kind) as part of St. Alban s environmental ministry. A special thanks to parishioner Kim Cluney for researching and organizing the effort through the Maryland Watershed Stewards Program, and obtaining the grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust to fund the project. Rev Pan began the morning with a prayer for the tree, shrubs, and gardeners. There were 20 youth working hard on this project, learning to use a pick and shovel to dig the holes. Our own expert gardener, Danielle Seiler, helped by showing the boys and girls the proper way to plant a shrub. The young people did a great job of plan ng. Kim provided a HUGE pizza for the workers lunch along with ice cream for dessert. It seemed to be a good experience for all involved. St. Alban s is very grateful for this wonderful gi. And, this is just the beginning. There is a plan for rain barrels and a rain garden at St. Alban s to help protect the Maryland watershed from rainwater run-off. We can look forward to Kim arranging for the same group of workers to return on Saturday, October 7th at 10:00 am to install the rain barrels. We raised $ for our reading camp! The Quarter Auc on was a terrific team effort with so many parishioners suppor ng this event in so many ways. This is what went into holding this fundraiser: visi ng businesses for dona ons of gi cards, bringing in items for the four baskets and Chinese auc on, organizing and beau fying our baskets, providing baked goods, invi ng family and friends to a end, se ng up at the Moose Lodge, selling raffle ckets and baked goods, collec ng quarters, cleaning up a er the auc on. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this a very successful fundraising event to benefit Glen Burnie Reading Camp! ST. ALBAN S DONATED TO HURRICANE RELIEF Out of concern for all the vic ms of the devasta ng hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the Social Ministries Steering Commi ee voted to donate $250 to the Episcopal Relief and Development Hurricane Relief Fund. UPCOMING EVENTS Rev. Pan and Social Ministries are exploring the possibility of St. Alban s collabora ng with the Anne Arundel County Police Department on a community outreach project of holding another free outdoor children s movie this fall. This would be a similar event to the movie we held last October at Freetown Boys and Girls Club. More details to follow at a later date. October
