1 The Word FALL 2018 THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE FRIENDS OF ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH A Message from Mother Anne: Dear Friends, As you certainly know, the Church is not a building, it is the people who gather in the name of Jesus Christ. But the place where people gather is also called a church, and it is a source of shelter and fellowship for the people. St. Paul s has a large building that is always a work in progress. Have you seen what is new at St. Paul s? We are upgrading flooring from the Chapel entrance to the Sacristy, and removing the last of the asbestos from our building. We are also converting the closet at the end of the catwalk into a central communication center. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project: Peter Chamberlain, Senior Warden, and our Vestry for their vision and leadership in making this key decision to improve our building. Neale Quenzel, chair of the Property Committee, for overseeing the planning and choices, and advising on the scope and budget. Kati Arp, Parish Administrator extraordinaire, for managing the process, serving as communication hub, and shepherding the new Communication center. The Altar Guild for moving operations so beautifully so that worship can continue at St. Paul s during construction. Our Eucharistic Ministers who have cheerfully vested in the Library. Our greeters who have directed traffic flow to accommodate closed off areas. Dr. Paul Klemme who directed the process for the safe removal and reinstallation of the chapel organ so the new wood flooring could be installed. Our congregation, for generously contributing to the installation of a new roof last year, so that we could move beyond that project, secure in the roof over our heads. Most of all, I would like to recognize two parishioners who remembered St. Paul s with significant bequests. Betty Lou Lay and William Miles endowed our parish with the financial ability to complete this much-needed project. Because of their faith and vision, we are able to improve the safety and beauty of our building. Their contribution to our spiritual home is a lasting gift that enhances the welcome we offer to all who come to St. Paul s. We will remember them with deep gratitude. They have contributed from what God has given them to be part of the ongoing life and renewal of the Church. We are hoping work will be complete by the end of August. Come and see what we have all been able to do, together! Grace and peace, Mother Anne in front of Westminister Abbey in London

2 The Word THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE FRIENDS OF ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH EDUCATION This summer has certainly been a full one for our St. Paul s family -and that is definitely true for the children and youth ministries! Twenty-four kids ages 6-11 and a myriad of adult and teen volunteers gathered at our annual SPARK (St. Paul s Arts and Rhythm for Kids) day camp in July for a fun-filled week of learning about the arts and culture of Japan. I am so thankful to everyone in our parish and in the community who gave so generously of their time and resources to make SPARK 2018 such a success. SPY (St. Paul s Youth) middle schoolers returned to Eugene, OR learning about different ways the faith community and other community partners are helping to meet the needs of the food and housing insecure. We were able to participate in the Burrito Brigade rolling and handing out delicious burritos to anyone in need in downtown Eugene. We also visited two SquareOne Villages, tiny home communities and helped with the installation of a fourth tiny home in Hospitality Village on the campus of the Church of the Resurrection. Two senior SPY members and I joined the diocesan Youth Mission Trip to Fort Defiance, AZ. In fact, I am writing to you from Navajoland while here with 18 youth and 4 other adults visiting Good Shepherd Mission. It has been an amazing opportunity experiencing God s creation here, working in community gardens and learning about Navajo life and spirituality. As much fun as this summer has been, I find myself eagerly anticipating the return to the fall rhythm around our parish. I look forward to seeing you all again and hearing about your summer adventures! I invite you to take note of all that is happening in the life of St. Paul s and pray you and your families will find many ways to be a part of the work that God is doing here. Blessings, Amy Goerger Photos from SPARK 2018 Japan and M&M Camp in Eugene, OR 2 FALL 2018

6 The Word THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE FRIENDS OF ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH STEWARDSHIP Many of us have visited the great cathedrals of medieval Europe. Some of the stone and glasswork at Canterbury, founded in the late 500s, dates back to the twelfth century. But it s not the quality of the construction that makes Canterbury endure: it s the importance of the place. What is important about St. Paul s? Can you close your eyes for a moment, and imagine St. Paul s 1,000 years from now? Many congregations are so focused on just making it through the end of the year that they rarely pause to consider the longterm significance and potential of the parish. What are we doing here at St. Paul s today that needs to endure for centuries to come? Stewardship is much more than fundraising. Stewardship is about responsibility, and its root verb, respond. Stewardship is how we respond to the Gospel message, and how we implement what Jesus taught in our lives. Stewardship is also about how we respond to the needs of the world, which, as Christians, we serve through what St. Paul called the ekklesia, the gathered community, translated in our Scriptures as church. Stewardship is taking faithful account of all that is entrusted to our care especially time, talent, and treasure and trying to make holy use of it. Stewardship is more than making sure St. Paul s remains the warm, friendly place we have come to know and love. Stewardship means understanding that St. Paul s is an outpost of the one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, in a frontier land of cynicism and self-absorption. We are a literal sanctuary, a place of safe haven in a troubled world. We are a place where eternal and liberating truths are spoken boldly. We are a community of people who care for one another, where lives intersect in beautiful and sacred ways, a gathering of pilgrims on a quest for peace. This fall, we invite you to consider what you will give of your time, talents, and treasures to ensure these important things endure. Peace, Join us regularly Sunday Church Services: 8:00 and 10:00 am Children s Sunday School 9:45 am (Once a month the Children s Choir sings at the 10:00 am service) Middle School SPY (St. Paul s Youth) 11:30 am-12:30 pm High School SPY (St. Paul s Youth) 6:30-8:30 pm Coffee Classes 11:30 am-12:30 pm Evensong and Concert (1 st Sunday, monthly, October - June) 4:00 pm Monday-Thursday Morning Prayer 9:00-9:30 am, Chapel Monday Education for Ministry (EfM) 6:30 pm, Room 108 Tuesday Women s Bible Study 10:00-11:30 am, Room 108 Knit, Pray, Crochet (2 nd Tuesday, monthly) 7:30-8:30 pm, Room 108 Wednesday Men s Bible Study 8:00-9:00 am, Library Children s activities and choir practice begin at 3:30 pm Wednesday Night Activities 5:15 pm community supper followed by Eucharist at 6:00 pm. 6 FALL 2018

7 STAFF PROFILE: SHAUNA HODGES Shauna joined the St. Paul s staff in January of this year and we are so blessed to have her! She serves as our in-house chef extraordinaire - whipping up delicious meals for St. Paul s Wednesday Night Community Dinners, as well as other special events in the life of our parish. She, her husband Pence, and their sweet puppy, Rags, moved to Salem a little over a year ago and are settling in nicely. Tell us a little bit about you and where you are from? Shauna: I m married, love to bake, and am originally from San Diego, CA. What are five things you can t live without? Coffee, my little dog, books, a nice kitchen, and a comfortable place to read. What are five kitchen ingredients/tools you can t live without? Stand mixer, ice cream scoop, garlic, cheese, and avocado. What s your motto or the advice that you live by? Greet everyone you meet as a friend. What is your favorite song to belt out in the car? The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love. (Pence and I sing this together.) What is your favorite dish to make, and what is your favorite food to have someone else make for you? Asian food to make and sushi when someone else makes it. When did you realize you that this was your passion? And do you have any passions outside of cooking? When I started volunteering at church and I realized how meaningful food can be and how much of a role it could play in bringing joy to lives. I love working on various projects--crafts, ladies nights, and events. What is your biggest culinary guilty pleasure? Mac & Cheese w/ diced pancetta & leeks. Shauna, her husband Pence, and their fur baby, Rags Trinity Choir Pilgrimage to England Dr. Paul Klemme plays the organ in the historic Cathedral in Worcester The St. Paul s Trinity Choir returned from a successful tour to England (July 20 - August 4). The group sang Evensong in residence for one week at the historic Cathedral in Worcester. Side trips to Wales and Coventry were true highlights. The second week was spent in London where the group gave concerts at Southwark and Canterbury Cathedrals. Side trips to Cambridge, Salisbury, Stonehenge and Windsor were unforgettable. The trip was a remarkably spiritual undertaking. We read and heard the same scriptures and said the same prayers as the congregation at St. Paul s in Salem. We are very proud to have left a small footprint on our pilgrimage. Thanks be to God! Dr. Paul Klemme Director of Music Ministries 7 FALL 2018
