1 VOLUME SIXˑ ISSUE EIGHT AUGUST 2017 Dear People of God: For this month s le er, I wanted to alert you to three ma ers: 1. As reported in the July Tidings, we will be undertaking the development of a 21st century pictorial directory. Through the use of the resource, Instant Church Directory, we will be able to upload our own photos to a secure server and assemble a church directory without the sorts of hassles usually associated with more tradi onal pictorial directory providers. I am grateful that Megan White has volunteered to spearhead this effort. We will begin the photo gathering process for the directory on September 1st, but in the mean me, please contact Megan at megframwhite@yahoo.com with any ques ons, and visit the resource website, h ps:// to learn more about this service. 2. This fall, I will be leading a book study of the book, Inwardly Digest: The Prayer Book as Guide to A Spiritual Life by Derek Olsen. Here s a brief descrip on of the book from the Forward Movement website (h ps:// Have you ever wondered if there was some kind of guide to living a deeper, richer spiritual life that seamlessly incorporated scripture alongside the wisdom of the Church? There is and you can find it in a pew near you! The Book of Common Prayer is more than a service book; it is a map to a deeper rela onship with God, a framework for developing a more inten onal and rewarding life of faith. Scholar Derek Olsen explores liturgical spirituality and how the prayer book serves as a repository of Chris an wisdom and spiritual prac ce stretching back to the beginnings of the Chris an movement. Focusing on three key elements the Calendar, the Daily Office, and the Eucharist he discusses the spiritual principles behind them and provides clear, prac cal, easy-to-follow explana ons of the services. These pa erns of life laid out in The Book of Common Prayer serve as a guide to the spiritual life, so that we might connect back to the God who calls each of us by name and that we might love as God loves us. A limited number of copies of this book are available now in the parish office for $13, but if needed we can always order more! I will offer three opportuni es for people to gather to discuss what they are learning in the book: September 25, October 23, and November 7. All gatherings will take place at 7:00 p.m. If you would like to procure a copy of this book, please contact Barb Neils in the parish office. 3. Contac ng the Rector: I spend a good deal of me out of the office mee ng with people in coffee shops, restaurants, and the like. This does not mean I am unavailable. If you d like to schedule an appointment, Barb Neils can do that for you because she has access to my calendar. If you have a pastoral emergency, you can call my mobile phone 24/7 at You may also text me at that phone number, message me on Facebook Messenger, tweet at me on Twi er (@solwrker), or me at tosapriest@yahoo.com. Even though I may not be in the office, thanks to the marvels of the 21st century, I carry a mobile office with me in the form of an iphone 6s. Don t hesitate to contact me! My scheduled Drop-In/Drop-By" hours will resume in September. As we head into the last few weeks of summer, I pray you all are enjoying a me of rest, renewal and refreshment! 2 "We have the ministry of reconcilia on" Northern Ireland has been embroiled in a conflict for hundreds of years that is complex, involving power, poli cs, culture, ethnicity and religion. The peace process is thankfully slowly advancing, and there is much we can learn from community leaders that have been on the ground about what has worked for reconcilia on that we can bring back and apply to our home context. TIDINGS (USPS ) Is published monthly by Trinity Church, 1717 Church Street, Wauwatosa, WI Periodical postage paid at Milwaukee, WI POSTMASTER: Send address changes to Tidings, 1717 Church Street, Wauwatosa, WI We are planning a pilgrimage for reconcilia on to Northern Ireland for Trinity Church March 5-10th, We will begin by visi ng the St. Patrick Centre in County Down, to learn about Saint Patrick and the dawning of Chris anity in Ireland. We will then spend a few days at Corrymeela, a world-renown peace center that specializes in training in crea ng safe spaces and dialogue across conflict. During this me we will tour Derry (also known as Londonderry), where the events of Bloody Sunday occurred, and tour murals depic ng the past and poin ng toward the future with hope. We will visit a variety of sites in Belfast relevant to the history of Northern Ireland and the troubles. We will meet Catholic and Protestant clergy who are working together toward peace with their congrega ons and religious communi es. And we will discuss together what our experiences could mean for Trinity going forward as a peacemaking church. If you are interested, please let one of us know by August 1. This won't represent a commitment to the trip, but we need to know interest levels very soon. And of course if you have any ques ons feel free to ask. 3 Vaca on Bible School Aug 7-11 from 9-11:30am. For Kids in JK - 5th grade. Invite your friends! Volunteers needed. Fee: $15 per child ($30 per family) For more info and to register: vbspro.events/p/events/trinitytosa See Jenice Carolan or Jill Paradowski with ques(ons. A Li7le Time, A BIG Difference Do you have a li le (me available on a Friday evening? Come, chit chat with your fellow parishioners and make a much needed sandwich for someone in need. At the end of August, Trinity Church has volunteered to make 130 bagged lunches that will be handed out to Gathering guests as they exit the Saturday lunch meal site. These bags will provide guests with an addi(onal meal for later that day. We will be assembling the lunches on Friday, August 25 at 6:30 pm, in Trinity's Fellowship Hall. All ages are invited to help. If you are too young to make a sandwich, come help and make a blessing card that will be added to the lunches. To volunteer, please signup in the narthex. When you sign your name, you will also be signing up to bring a few, inexpensive ingredients. If you are not available on Friday, August 25 but would like to help, please signup to donate small bo les of juice. We also need someone to pick up the lunches from Trinity on Saturday morning August 26 and deliver them to Our Next Genera(on Neighborhood Center at 3421 W. Lisbon Avenue. The lunches can be dropped off at Our Next Genera(on between 9:45 am 11:00 am. If you are not available this month, but would like to make bagged lunches in September or October, please signup and let us know that too. Trinity parishioners have been volunteering at The Gathering for many years. The Gathering, although founded by the Episcopal Diocese, is now an independent nonprofit organiza(on and an interfaith ministry. The Gathering serves free home-cooked meals that are prepared and served each week spread across four Milwaukee loca(ons. All meals are cooked fresh on site. 98% of direct service work is done by 1,500-2,000 volunteers annually. For more informa(on about The Gathering see their website 3

4 Save the Date! Mythological Awesome Auc on for Outreach Saturday, November 4-6:30-9:00 p.m. Please join us as we step back in me and pay tribute to the Gods and Goddesses of Greek and Roman mythology. Whether it be Zeus, the King of Gods; Venus, the Roman Goddess of Love; or Poseidon, God of the Sea, we will come together to raise funds for Trinity outreach. These programs include The Gathering, Habitat for Humanity and Our Next Genera on just to name a few. Please mark your calendar and begin to think about the mythological character you would like to be (costumes are encouraged), and consider an item or service for dona on. It will be a fantas c evening. Mys cal Creatures Party Kids are invited to the Mys cal Creatures Party, on November 4, while parents a end the Awesome Auc on. There will be pizza, cra s, games and we will end the evening with snacks and a movie. Kids a end for free. Kids are encouraged to come in their pajamas or dress-up as a mys- cal creature. The party is November 4 from 6pm - 9pm, for kids 4 and over. The nursery will be available for kids 3 and under. See Sharon Long or Jenice Carolan with ques ons. In October, we will put a signup sheet in the Narthex (the signup is so we can plan games according to ages and plan enough food). It's a fun night for everyone! We hope you can join us. SCRIP Please remember that ordering even one card from SCRIP helps in the total of funds we have for outreach. You can purchase a card for the auc on too. We use them to create the always popular gi card pull. Cards are ordered on the first Sunday of the month. Thanks for your help! 4

5 The Rector and Social Media As many of you may know, Gary is fairly ac ve on several social media pla orms. Facebook: h ps:// gary.b.manning Gary does not send Facebook friend requests to parishioners, but if a parishioner sends him a friend request, he accepts it. Gary s Facebook feed is an assortment of photos, quotes, observa ons, and select ar cles. He maintains a non-par san presence on this pla orm. Facebook Messenger: If you need to reach out to Gary and don t have his mobile phone # at hand, do not hesitate to send him a message via this applica on. Gary uses this channel to scratch his photographic itch. Expect pictures of random items, some selfies, and lots of pictures of Finley and Clyde (the Manning family s canine companions). Tai Chi Class at Trinity If you ve ever thought about this gentle form of exercise as a way of prac cing whole body mindfulness, now is the me to try it! Our own Ann Brophy is a cer fied Tai Chi instructor, and has graciously agreed to share her training with us. In order for us to have a class, we need at least 8 par cipants. If you have an interest, please contact Ann via her at: brownphy@ameritech.net or call Barb at the parish office at: Classes will be conducted in the parish hall. Days/ mes of the class will be determined once interest is established. Consider invi ng a friend to join you! Twi While Twi er is an acquired taste, Gary enjoys the opportunity to limit his normal verbosity to 140 characters. Twi er is s ll the Wild West of social media, but if you are on this pla orm, please give the Rector a follow. Social media is one of the ways the Rector keeps up with the culture and keeps in touch with parishioners. If you d like to connect with him through any of these channels, please either follow, or send a friend request at your convenience! 5

6 Nursery and Adjoining Family Room Babies and children are always welcome in church, but if your child needs a break, the nursery is open on Sundays from 9:15-11:30 am, for children 4 and under. The nursery has paid staff members. You can also u lize the library, which adjoins the narthex. The "Family Room" is a small room next to the nursery that is also available for you to use with your child. This room has a rocking chair, changing table and a few toys. The church service can be heard from the library and the family room. Please use the area that works best for your family: the Nave, nursery, library, family room, or a combina on of all. The Trinity picnic this year was held at the church since the weather did not cooperate and made our picnic area a big patch of mud. We had a fun me with bubbles in the green space next to the garden and great food was prepared by Chris Oliver on the grill. The kids had a great me with several other kid games and Elizabeth Cover had the closest guess for the guessing jar of candy. The adults had a wonderful me talking to one another. Fun was had by all.
