1 VOLUME SIX ISSUE FOUR APRIL 2017 A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF TRINITY CHURCH WAUWATOSA Dear Sisters and Brothers: One of the constants of life near the Village of Wauwatosa over the past number of years, has been construc on -- of all sorts and condi ons. Roads have been rebuilt. Storm water drainage systems have been reengineered. All of the various sorts of lines (power, telecommunica on, water, sewage, natural gas, and probably plenty more) have been upgraded, expanded, repaired and rerouted. And there is s ll more construc on to come! As I have watched the various projects unfold, I have become fascinated by how much of all of this work, once it is completed, becomes invisible to us. We have plenty to say about the torn up road, or the inconvenient detour. When a project is finished, we may enjoy the completed project s aesthe c (or at the very least a pothole-free travel experience), but the underground infrastructure that supports so many of the systems we simply take for granted quite literally becomes out of sight and out of mind. We give li le thought to how the water magically appears at our kitchen sink, or the amount of engineering required to give us reliable street lights and phone service. Quite simply, we rely on others to make those systems work, and because our systems are so reliable, we can overlook how much effort is required to keep everything so effortless. Our life here at Trinity is not unlike these construc on projects. So much of what goes on here is behind the scenes and unseen. And, if we re not careful, we can simply come to expect that all of the stuff of church work just happens. The newsle er gets assembled, the worship bulle ns get printed, flowers appear, food is provided for fellowship mes, the liturgies are celebrated, sermons are preached, anthems are sung, the bathrooms are cleaned and stocked, the light bill gets paid, the snow gets plowed, and the grass gets mowed. And who is responsible for keeping all the systems running? We are. We ALL are. There is no parish that exists apart from each of us. Trinity Church cannot func on without each of us doing our part, to the degree we are able, no ma er how small that part may seem. Quite frankly, most church work is about as exci ng as digging a hole and filling it in again. The details of administra on, building maintenance, enabling electronic dona ons, or upda ng the mailing list aren t glamorous. And yet, all of these details contribute to the experience visitors have when they enter our space for the first me on a Sunday morning. When visitors comment to me about the "good energy" they feel here, I know that what they feel is the result of our efforts to a end to what many would call "boring details." We never get a second chance to make a first impression, and I am grateful so many of you give so much of your me, your energy and your money to support the mission and ministry of this parish. Your care for this place shows up in literally thousands of ways, and I simply wanted you to know that even if no one else no ces, I do. Thank you, and thanks be to God for the 130 years of faithful witness of Trinity Church! With prayers for a blessed Easter de, The Rev'd Gary B. 3 The whole community is needed to celebrate our Three Holy Days! Together on these days, we hear our most beloved scriptures and we sing some of our most beau ful and treasured songs. Together we gather at the table, beside the fire, around the font. On Maundy Thursday, in remembrance and humility, we do what Jesus commanded: we wash feet. The Lord is clear: his very Body and Blood consumed here must transform and strengthen us for service. Following Communion, the sacred Body of Christ is carried in solemn procession to an altar of repose. On Good Friday, we celebrate the Lord s Passion. What Jesus came into this world to do to save us from sin and open the way to everlas ng life with God has been accomplished on the Cross. We come forward to venerate the wood of the Cross. The Three Days find their highest point in the Easter Vigil. In darkness we kindle the new Easter fire and gather around the flame to share the story of salva on, from the Crea on to the Resurrec on. We stand with those who have been preparing to receive the sacraments of ini a on (bap sm, confirma on and Eucharist) on this night and we remember and renew our bap smal vows. There is live-giving water, fragrant oil, and the taste of bread and wine. April 13 7:00 pm: Maundy Thursday Our Alleluias ring out! 6 From having our paychecks deposited directly into our bank accounts to credit and debit cards at the ready, cash and personal checks are being used less and less. To that end, the vestry has decided to go forward with an online dona on page on our website, There will be a place for you to donate whenever/wherever/whatever amount you choose. The one caveat will be, as requested by our Treasurer, pledges will not be paid via the website. The reason for this is because we will be using an interface to PayPal for security reasons. PayPal takes a small amount of each contribu on as their fee. We don t want those fees taken out of pledged amounts for your sake and Trinity s. Pledges are an integral part of se ng budgetary goals each year and we calculate them in full, not with fees deducted. Rummage Sale What would you buy from a rummage sale? We want those kind of items for the Trinity sale. The rummage sale is June 23 rd and 24th. We will need rummage and workers to sort the week of June 19 th and then workers the two days of the sale. This is a fun event and we are hoping you will join us. This is the second largest fund raising event for outreach (the Awesome Auc on is the largest). As you do some Spring cleaning remember that we can use your gently used items: Here are some details: Please no clothes for this rummage Smaller furniture can be brought to church, but if it does not sell, please plan to pick it up a er the sale You can begin bringing your rummage to the fellowship hall on June 14th. Please come when the office is open. If you have need to bring your rummage to church before June 14th or when the office is not open, please contact Cheryl Thulin at csthulin@gmail.com. Any rummage other than clothing and large furniture that you think will sell is perfect. Books are always a good seller, and we will share what is le with the Cathedral for their annual sale. Please, no encyclopedia, magazines or textbooks. WE WANT YOUR RUMMAGE! A Big Thanks and Prayers needed for Red Door Clothes (RDC) RDC has never seen so many men s shoes. Thanks to all of you who brought in shoes to share. Our guests were impressed too. Please keep RDC in your prayers as we try and find a new place for this important ministry. We want to stay in the general vicinity of St. James' Church. If anyone has any ideas, please speak with Nancy Huber (silverfoxhuber@gmail.com) or Jill Paradowski (jill.paradowski@gmail.com). 6

7 Series of Book Discussions There will be a series of discussions of the trilogy of novels by Marilynne Robinson, starting with the Pullitzer prize winning book, Gilead. This book, and the two that follow it, offers an historical perspective of American religion and a meditation on personal Christian spirituality. Gilead is set in a small town in Iowa, and tells the story of an aging Congregationalist minister, his father and grandfather, both ministers, and the current events that transpire to challenge his faith. Fr. Wayne Fehr will lead the discussions. The date will be determined soon. If you are interested, please Corliss Rice, corlissrice@gmail.com or call her at While in Phoenix we visited Joan Zeiger. For those who do not know Joan, she a ended Trinity since she was 4 years old un l she moved to Phoenix in fall of She did just about any job there was to do at Trinity including the VBS snacks for over 20 years. She misses Trinity, but needed to move closer to her daughter, grandsons and her three great granddaughters. We picked her up for church and she was so happy to a end an Episcopal Church. She is a perfect example of a faithful servant, who helps all without ques on, spreads the good news of God s love and is kind and generous to those around her. As we sat and cha ed in her new apartment, she told some stories she had about Trinity. We were blessed to have her for 86 years.just amazing. Here are some pictures of her at church and her new home. And Now..A Word From The Senior Warden By Jill Paradowski Paul and I spent two weeks away from Trinity and a ended another church in Phoenix. Every me I a end another church I come away with some ideas to share back home, and an apprecia on of what we have here at Trinity. The number of new families who have found us is amazing. Many of them have small children and they fit right in with our many families who also have young children. The children are such a blessing and fill our church with joy. We have just a few folks in their 80 s and 90 s now. Spend some me with them and talk about their memories of Trinity. You will be delighted to hear about how Trinity has grown into the parish it is today. 7
