Who Are We? By Bart Slabbekorn, Senior Warden May 2013 The Parish Profile is a beautiful portrait of Saint Andrew's Parish! Your Vestry spent 2 hours with the Profile Committee going over every page and every paragraph. We love how they captured the heart and soul of this Church and our family. I want to say a big THANK YOU to Pat and Erin who led the committee along with all the members of the information gathering and the writing teams. You all did a truly amazing job. In the next couple of weeks, we will polish up the final draft of the profile and publish it on our website for you to see. We are almost a year into our transition time and we are perfectly on pace toward calling our next Rector. The profile will be published to the Diocese and National Church for use in a nationwide search for the perfect priest to lead us into our future. That search will be lead by a committee charged by your Vestry to leave no stone unturned in the search for the best and brightest Rector available to us, one who will lovingly lead us into our bright future together. There are many exciting opportunities for you to get involved in the activities at Church as we live out the Gospel...through Love, Prayer and Service. At Saint Andrew's we are always feeding someone, sharing fellowship together, studying the Word, playing laser tag or bowling with the youth or some other fun event. We even have a resurgence of our Young Adult Fellowship with several events in May. As the Easter Season leads us into the Summer, I invite you to look around this newsletter, our website, Facebook page or one of our many publications to find out how you can surround yourself with God's Joy at Saint Andrew's. Bart+ The People s Warden? Read all about it on page 7! Sunday School children bring donations for our Food Pantry Living the Gospel through Love, Prayer and Service Thank you!

2 PAGE 2 Are you new to St. Andrew s? Please join us! Newcomer and New Member Orientation Breakfast Saturday, June 8th - 9:00AM We are so happy that you have found St. Andrew s! Please join us for a fun and informative morning as Pastor Janet and the Welcome Ministry host a breakfast and short orientation class for those who are new to St. Andrew s during the past year. We ll share the mysterious workings and information about St. Andrew s, answer your questions, and invite you to share your faith history and the expectations you have as you consider making St. Andrew s your church home. We will meet at 9:00 AM on Saturday, June 8th, in the Parish Hall for continental breakfast, a short video and a relaxed discussion. We ll include a tour of the campus, show you hidden stained glass windows, and hopefully add to your knowledge and comfort when you come to worship. We will have you on your way by 11:00 AM. Childcare will be provided if you let us know you plan to attend. Please call the church office , Debbie Hickson or Chase Fields to let us know if you plan to attend and the age of your children. Communication Task Force Formed On April 11, St. Andrew s parish hall was the site of the inaugural communications breakfast. Gillian Campbell and Cordee Manis shared the wealth of information they acquired at the recent Episcopal Communicators Conference in San Diego, and those present helped to chart a course for improved communications both within the parish and to the wider community. In addition to her duties as parish secretary on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Cordee will now be the Parish Communications Coordinator. She is your main staff contact for all announcements, event promotion, and website changes. We ve added a communications page to the website, where you can see the deadlines for news and announcements, find out about all the avenues of sharing your news, and even submit an announcement for publication. If you are interested in joining the task force, the next meeting will be in the parish hall at 7:30 a.m. on May 9. 3 PAGE 3 Thank you! The April weather may have been gloomy and cool, but the mood at our Ministry Fes val was warm and welcoming! Along with a wide variety of ministry tables and colorful displays, we had our first-ever silent Servant-for-a-Day auc on, which was a great success. We shopped the exquisite gi items at the African Ministries Sale, and supported the Youth Mission Trip by purchasing delectable treats from their Bake Sale. From our hard-working and well-organized set-up crew, to the ministry members who created eye-catching and informa ve displays, from the many, many parishioners who visited the ministry tables and spoke with their representa ves, to the many volunteers who generously lent a hand with the Fes val take-down and clean-up, the Fes val commi ee thanks you! We are deeply grateful for everyone who par cipated in this special St. Andrew s event and made it the fes ve success that it was. The apostle John tells us that when the crowd that had assembled to hear Jesus was growing hungry, Andrew found a small boy who had five loaves and two small fish, with which Jesus fed the mul tudes. Andrew didn't provide the food, and he didn't feed the people, but he was the one who found the resources to fill a need, laying the groundwork for a miracle. It s also our story here at St. Andrew s: 5 loaves, 2 fish, enough to feed a mul tude! Youth Mission Trip 2013 Update Thank you all for your con nued support and helping our mission team raise funds for the trip this summer! We are looking for people to host a small group gathering or two at their home. 6 PAGE 6 Health and Wellness Alison Casciano; Vestry Liaison May Health Awareness The benefits of laughter are no joke! The Na onal Episcopal Church s Wellness publica on, MT Healthy Partners, recently publicized this reminder about stress reduc on and the power of laughter. The Mayo Clinic suggests these ways improve your emo onal health: Add daily humor. Find a few simple items, such as photos or comic strips that make you chuckle. Then hang them up at home or in your office. Keep funny movies or comedy shows on hand for mes when you need an added humor boost. Laugh and the world laughs with you. Find a way to laugh about your own situa ons and watch your stress begin to fade away. Even if it feels forced at first, prac ce laughing. It does your body good. Share a laugh. Make it a habit to spend me with friends who make you laugh. And then return the favor by sharing funny stories or jokes with those around you. Knock-knock. Browse through your local bookstore, library, or humor sec on of your local card shop. Don t be afraid to laugh out loud--and take note of how much be er you feel a erwards! Smiling and laughing just make you feel be er. Go ahead and give it a try. Turn the corners of your mouth up into a smile and then give a laugh, even if it feels a li le forced. Once you've had your chuckle, take stock of how you're feeling. Are your muscles a li le less tense? Do you feel more relaxed or buoyant? That's the natural wonder of laughing at work. Adapted from h p:// On-line Health Assessment - The Episcopal Church Pension Group website provides an on-line health assessment which is accessible by going to health-assessment/. This Mayo Clinic personalized wellness tool will take you about 20 minutes to fill-out. Upon comple on, you'll find a list of recommenda ons and interac ve tools to help you address your risks and to make healthy improvements. EmbodyHealth's portal provides informa on on blood pressure, stress and cholesterol management, weight reduc on, and more. Give it a try! 7 PAGE 7 Junior Warden s Report the Peoples Warden Jim S ven, Junior Warden At St. Andrew s, the Junior Warden has had the responsibility to ensure the upkeep and security of our physical plant and grounds. However, Anglican and Episcopal tradi on has commonly designated the Junior Warden as the People s Warden. As your presently serving Junior Warden, I would hope also to embrace that tradi on. What I have in mind, with the Rector s and Vestry s blessings, is to set up a mechanism whereby anyone in the Parish who has a complaint, a ques on, a sugges on, or an issue or a dispute, and doesn t know who to take it to, or is re cent to bother someone about it, would have a place to turn to have their voice heard. The Junior Warden would then take responsibility to take the issue to the appropriate person on the Vestry or the staff, or Rector where necessary, and follow-up to ensure the issue is at least discussed and addressed and responded to. Any such complaints or ques ons etc. can be raised by use of a Sugges on Box in the narthex, or by leaving a note in the Junior Warden s mail slot in the Parish Hall or by ing the Junior Warden directly. All such communica ons will be dealt with confiden ally, unless expressly waived in the note. The communica ons can be anonymous, and will s ll be dealt with in the same manner. All of us in leadership at St. Andrew s desire to foster an atmosphere of openness and responsiveness to all issues, large or small. Perhaps the People s Warden can help. Why is X a Kiss? by Marvin Vanoi in Reminisce, courtesy of Jim Temple Our custom of pu ng X s at the end of le ers and notes to symbolize kisses grew out of medieval legal prac ces. In order to indicate good faith and honesty in those days, the sign of St. Andrew a lted cross was placed a er the signature on all important documents. Therea er, contracts and agreements were not considered binding un l each signer added St. Andrew s cross a er his name. Then he was required to kiss the document to further guarantee faithful performance of his obliga ons. Over the centuries, the origin of the ceremony was forgo en. But people s ll associated the X with the kiss instead of the pledge of good faith, and the custom has con nued into modern mes. Vestry Highlights Your Vestry meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month to discuss and vote on ma ers of the administra on of the church. The next mee ng will be May 14th at 6:30 p.m. and is open to all. Here are some highlights from the April mee ng. Full minutes are available at the office: 167 pledge cards have been received for the year Quarterly statements will be ed to pledgers by the end of the month. Printed statements will be mailed to those who request them. The Parish Profile Wri ng Commi ee met with the vestry. The majority of the mee ng focused on reviewing the dra of the Parish Profile and the Office of Transi onal Ministry Document from the Diocese. It is important that we convey an accurate picture of St. Andrew s including honesty about our strengths and challenges. The commi ee has done an outstanding job in compiling all the research and informa on and wri ng these lengthy documents.
