2 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 5, 2017 Light shines through the darkness for the upright. Psalm 112:4 My Dear Parishioners, Here are some more of my scattered thoughts... In today s gospel, Jesus uses some images to describe what his disciples are. Salt of the Earth and Light of the World The good news today in the gospel is that Jesus is reminding each of us of our vocation that we are called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world just as the first disciples were. Jesus believes this of us. Do we believe this of ourselves? How can we be the salt of the earth and the light of the world to others? All we need to do is look at people like St. Teresa of Calcutta, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Dorothy Day. They are wonderful examples of Salt of the earth and Light of the world. Lord Jesus, help us to believe that we are called to be the salt of the earth and light of the world. Send the Holy Spirit to enable us to be what you ask of us. Try to be salt of the earth and light of the world this week. Remember you are always in my prayers. Pray for one another, Father Tom

5 Chúa Nhật 5 th Quanh Năm Chính anh em là ánh sáng cho trần gian. (Mc 5,14) Suy niệm: Chúa Giê-su mong mỏi các môn đệ của Ngài phải là muối và ánh sáng cho thế giới. Những công việc tốt đẹp các môn đệ làm đó phải có sức toả lan như ánh sáng, như muối để cho thế gian nhận ra tình thương Chúa mà tôn vinh Ngài. Cha Anthony de Mello chỉ ra một cách sống để là muối, là ánh sáng: Một tâm hồn không có gì cần bảo vệ và không có tham vọng sẽ để cho tâm trí thảnh thơi, không bị xiềng xích, mạnh dạn và tự do trong cuộc sống tìm kiếm sự thật. Tâm hồn này đã trở thành một ngọn đèn soi sáng cho sự tăm tối của toàn nhân loại. Trong thế giới coi trọng vật chất và hưởng thụ, thái độ sống siêu thoát đó thực sự là một lời chứng, một luồng sáng giúp nhân loại định hướng con đường tiến về Nước Trời. Kỳ Đại Giới trẻ Thế giới 2002 diễn ra tại Toronto, Canada, Thánh Giáo Hoàng Gioan Phaolô II bày tỏ lòng biết ơn của mình với Thiên Chúa vì cho hàng ngàn người trẻ đến với những kỳ Đại Hội trong những năm qua. Với chủ đề, ÁNH SÁNG CỦA TRẦN GIAN, Ngài nhấn mạnh đến ánh sáng Chúa Kitô mang đến cho thế giới và ánh sáng ấy được chiếu tỏa từ người này sang người khác. Mời Bạn: Thắp sáng niềm tin chính là làm cho người ta thấy Chúa qua cách sống của mình. Lời Chúa hôm nay Chúa cũng mời gọi mỗi người chúng ta phải thắp sáng niềm tin bằng làm những việc tốt đẹp. Tốt đẹp không theo kiểu con người, nghĩa là chỉ nhắm đến thành công, danh dự của bản thân, mà quên đi tính chứng tá Tin Mừng phải có trong công việc, cho dù giá phải trả là sự thất bại, thiệt thòi. Tư tưởng của cha Anthony de Mello thật thâm thuý khi ngài diễn tả cách sống niềm tin không phải chỉ bằng công việc được hoàn thành nhưng là bằng chính thái độ siêu thoát đó. SCHOOL NEWS Meghan Jorgensen Principal of St. Felicitas School Our Open House was a huge success. Thank you so much for all the love, prayers and support from the Parish to help kick off Catholic School s Week. We had a fantastic week filled with many wonderful activities to celebrate the great gift of Catholic Education. During the week the students were exposed to a variety of careers from video game design to pediatric physical therapy. We also had one of our alumni, Officer Dennis Mally, who spoke to our younger students about being a police officer and then did a K-9 demo. The rest of the week honored our students with small treats and lunchtime dancing. All staff members were honored at a special assembly, and we shared our classrooms and performances with our special people. A big thank you to all the special people who came and supported our students. Finally, we stood in solidarity with all who suffer from hunger with our prayer service and hunger banquet. We joined with Pope Francis and the One Human Family Food For All and said the official prayer of the campaign. Pope Francis tells us that if we all join together and make fighting hunger in our world a priority then it is possible to end hunger in our world. Escuchar esto puede ser problemático, con un poco de meditación, quizá deje de serlo. Es fácil ver lo frecuente que fallamos ser sal y luz para los demás. Esto podría llevarnos al desanimo y un miedo de fracasar una vez más. Pero Jesús dice que ser sal y luz es un don de Dios, y no un logro de nuestra parte. Él recalca que un "cajón" ocasiona que la luz de una lámpara no se vea. Hemos creado y recibido todo tipo de formas de pensamiento y comportamiento que bloquean nuestra capacidad de ser luz para los demás. Pero estas formas no definen quienes somos. Pese a nuestras faltas, somos primeramente los hijos amados de Dios y personas con dones. Podemos tener esperanza que Dios nos ayudará a dirigir nuestros "cajones" para evitar que bloquen nuestra habilidad de amar a los demás. La Buena Nueva de Jesús para nosotros es que en definitiva no somos cajones sino lámparas.
