1 All Souls Episcopal Church Church Office SOUL (7685) Church FAX: Thrift Store: North Cleveland Avenue, North Fort Myers, Florida OUR MISSION STATEMENT All Souls is an Episcopal/Anglican Christian community in North Fort Myers whose members seek to advance the Kingdom of God through reaching out to and welcoming all persons. We strive to live our commitment to Christ by faithful worship, biblical preaching and teaching, prayer, and loving service. We believe that God loves you just as you are; and anytime you want to show up, please be our guest - we are saving you a seat! SUNDAY EUCHARIST Traditional 8:00 AM Contemporary 10:15 AM CHRISTIAN EDUCATION 1st & 3rd Tuesday 5:00 PM MUSIC MINISTRY Wednesday 3:30 PM CHURCH OFFICE HOURS Mon.-Thurs. 9 AM-3 PM Fri. 9 AM-12 PM THRIFT STORE HOURS Tues - Sat. 9 AM-4 PM March 2018 FROM THE RECTOR S DESK In most of our worship services we share or pass the peace. In recent weeks I have asked that we minimize personal contact to limit the possible spread of the flu virus which is still very active in Florida and around the world. Quite coincidentally I also chose the theme of peace for the Lenten sermon series this year, so I thought it appropriate that we add some explanation here this month. The word peace has many shades of meaning in English, of course, from the absence of conflict to the wonderful quiet time when the baby finally goes to sleep. But, what is the origin and meaning of the peace in worship? The peace is a very ancient Christian practice, referred to by Paul in Romans 16:16 as well as in 1 st and 2 nd Corinthians and 1 st Thessalonians. In the second century there are records of the peace being shared at the end of the Liturgy of the Word, before the presentation of the offertory gifts, just as we do today. In the Roman rite the peace was moved to during the communion in the 5 th century and remains there still. In our BCP of 1549 the peace was also placed during communion, and then removed completely in It was only in the BCP of 1979 that the peace was restored to its ancient position in the liturgy. Paul s instruction was to greet one another with a holy kiss, and this may well have been the common way of expressing the peace in the early church, whatever the physical form used, the purpose is the expression of love and reconciliation; the renewal of relationship within the Christian community. It is not, and never was meant to be, a time of social chat with one s friends. It was, and is, a time to be reconciled with all one s sisters and brothers in Christ before approaching the altar to receive communion. As such one might first approach any member of the community with whom one has an unresolved conflict in order to be reconciled. During the middle ages it was common to pass the peace without any personal contact at all, by means of a metal or wooden plate, usually inscribed with an image of the crucifixion, which was kissed first by the celebrant then passed throughout the congregation from hand to hand. This plaque or plate was called the Pax Board or Pax Brede. Its use seems to have completely disappeared now. The peace of God then surpasses all comprehension (and) shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7). In other words, God has designed the Christian life to give Christians victory over the tyranny of our circumstances and the problems we face. This peace is a holy gift from God s grace which we are instructed to share with all our neighbors. What a glorious opportunity we are given each week, especially during Lent, to draw closer to God through sharing his peace, and to invite others to come and see. May the peace of God be always with you. In Christ,

5 WEDNESDAY OUTREACH January was a busy month at the All Souls and outreach Program. The cold streak in early January brought a significant increase in adults and families seeking our services. Our monthly activity report reflects this: Activity Families 1813 Adults 1114 Children 370 Seniors 329 Work Shoes 3 Bus Passes 24 Bikes 14 Lights 11 Tents 6 Sleeping Bags 2 Meals Served 887 Thrift Store Clients 400 Amount $5, All of this activity is made possible by the faithful service of our many volunteers. On Wednesday All Soul s is a beehive of activity with over 30 volunteers engaged in delivery of a variety of services directly to our clients. Equally important but less visible is the preparation that happens the day before. On Tuesday about between 1500 and 5000 pounds of food is delivered from Harry Chapin Food Bank to All Souls where it is unloaded and staged in the crib. A separate delivery of bread and desserts is also delivered by Wake Up America. All this food plus all of the hygiene products we have on hand are organized by about 15 volunteers. They load about 175 bags of groceries for pickup by clients on Wednesday. On a monthly basis Harry Chapin also delivers packages of Care and Share Food for clients 60 years or older delivered on Tuesday and given out on Wednesday Historical Note Harry Chapin was a popular folk/rock music performer who donated proceeds from every other concert to end hunger. He co-founded Why Hunger? and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his outstanding humanitarian effort. He died in a car accident in 1981 at the age of 39 on his way to a benefit concert. In 1996 Sandy Chapin, his widow, gave permission for his name to be used by the food bank. The Harry Chapin Food Bank provides food to about 28,000 people a week. **Help Wanted** The receives donated food on Wednesday afternoons which needs to be unloaded into storage. We are looking for a volunteer willing to take 30 minutes on Wednesdays to assist in moving this food from a pickup truck to the freezers. Call Jim Johnson at In His Service, John and Cherie Martin Co-Outreach Managers THRIFT STORE With the return of our seasonal residents our donations have increased substantially. For that we are very grateful. But, there seems to be some confusion about what we take so I am recycling this article from last year. We do not take: Mattresses, Box Springs Organs, Pianos Electronics, TVs (except for radios) Entertainment Units Large Appliances (If you have any of these items, we recommend contacting Kiwanis or the Habitat s Restore.) There are other criteria to consider as well: 1. It s ok to throw things away. Look at the article and ask Would I want to wear that or use that? Keep in mind that the church pays to have the garbage removed. 2. Do not believe the old adage, anything is better than nothing. Some of our clients may be homeless or on very limited budgets so I will not insult them by offering merchandise that is stained, dirty, or ripped. 3. The leftovers of a garage sale may not be what we want to display in the store. It s ok to tell your neighbors that we are picky. We do not pick up after neighborhood Trash & Treasure sales. And, contrary to the popular belief that one man s trash is another s treasure - 90% of someone s trash is trash! 4. Stored items are subjected to the intense heat and humidity of our summers. These 2 culprits do a job on shoes, plastics, and clothes. 5. As required by the IRS Donations must be in good used condition or better for tax deductions! There are days we feel like glorified garbage collectors. The donations we receive are well worn, extremely dirty, and just plain nasty. We walk a fine line trying not to discourage but to enlighten our donors as to what we need to run a successful store! You can help by passing these messages on to your friends and family. I hope this gives some clarity to a very sensitive subject. Sincerely, Dottie Brown, Mgr. Gems of the Bible Workshop: LIVING STONES A teaching will be held on March 24, 2018 on precious and semi-precious stones, such as rubies, sapphires, emeralds etc., in the Book of Revelation, chapter 21. Learn how to make a single bracelet, a double bracelet or a necklace with these gemstones. Cost is $30. Reservations are limited to seven (7) people only and pre-payment will guarantee your reservation. Make your reservation early with Martie or see me in person for more information.

6 News From Your Parish Nurse Many of us succumb to the call of unhealthy choices when we go grocery shopping. Here are some ideas to avoid the temptations while shopping thus encouraging us to make healthier choices. Plan Ahead Make a weekly plan for the number of dinners that you will be preparing. Consider if you will be having any meals out or any guests in. Consider the foods you will need for breakfast, lunch and snacks for the week. Take an inventory of those items which you already have fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy products. Consider making more than one meal when you are cooking. Freeze the leftovers for a quick meal another day. Survey your freezer before you shop. Make A List A list will help to make your shopping experience more efficient. It helps to keep you focused on the task and avoid impulse items not on your list. Use your meal plan as your guide when making your shopping list. Be sure to include healthy, convenient, and nutritious snack foods. Be Intentional Shop around the perimeter of the store as that is where the healthy foods are usually stocked in most grocery stores. Skip the sugary beverages and processed snack aisles. Stick to your list. Don t go shopping when you are hungry This is a disaster waiting to happen. You will be much more likely to impulse buy the unhealthy snacks and foods. If you must shop on an empty stomach, drink some water or eat a piece of fruit first. Read the nutrition labels Serving size is one of the most important areas on the label. Decide how many servings you are likely to eat and multiply the numbers. Consider the calories, fat and sodium in your items. Compare similar products so that you can choose the healthiest option. Consider the size not only in cost but will you use the entire container in a timely fashion or will it hang around and go stale before you use it. Remember if you buy canned vegetables they are usually high in sodium so rinse them off before you cook them and do not use the fluid that they are packed in to cook them in. Many stores are offering BOGOs these days. Consider carefully if you are going to use the other item in the near future or is it going to sit in your pantry indefinitely. May God s Blessing be with you each day. Pat Epifanio, RN MS, FCN A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION ALL SOULS EPISCOPAL CHURCH N. CLEVELAND AVENUE N. FT. MYERS, FL
