1 All Souls Episcopal Church Church Office SOUL (7685) Church FAX: Thrift Store: North Cleveland Avenue, North Fort Myers, Florida OUR MISSION STATEMENT All Souls is an Episcopal/Anglican Christian community in North Fort Myers whose members seek to advance the Kingdom of God through reaching out to and welcoming all persons. We strive to live our commitment to Christ by faithful worship, biblical preaching and teaching, prayer, and loving service. We believe that God loves you just as you are; and anytime you want to show up, please be our guest - we are saving you a seat! SUNDAY EUCHARIST Traditional 8:00 AM Contemporary 10:15 AM CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Sunday 9:15 AM MUSIC MINISTRY Wednesday 3:30 PM CHURCH OFFICE HOURS Mon.-Thurs. 9 AM-3 PM Fri. 9 AM-12 PM THRIFT STORE HOURS Tues.- Sat. 9 AM-4 PM November 2016 FROM THE RECTOR S DESK Forgiveness continued: Before I return to the theme of my notes for this month and last, I want to applaud the involvement of All Souls parishioners at #134, held at DaySpring from September 29 to October 3. As you may know, begins with a 3 day experience of Christian community living and renewal. Those attending are known as pilgrims, and we had 5 pilgrims from our congregation: Barbara Ammons, Jerry Hasaka, Darcy Jackson, Tom Joy and Paul Traylor. This is a wonderful statement about the Christian family of All Souls. Additionally we had 2 members of our congregation working on the team at ; Rich and Pam Monroe, and I was there too as one of the spiritual directors. The theme of our Diocesan Convention this year was Reconciliation, commonly defined as the process of establishing friendly relationships after a period of disagreement. The Hebrew origin of this word in the Bible however is kapar, which has the additional meanings of forgiveness, mercy and atonement. This is one of the most important concepts in the Bible and clearly gives us instruction about our reconciliation to God. If God has forgiven us, which we are assured he has, then we likewise must forgive our enemies. But we may think, God is all powerful, all he has to do is snap his fingers and forgive us, a sort of laissezfaire attitude to sin. Not so. God is fully righteous, perfect and holy; he does not just wipe out our transgressions and say that it doesn t matter. St Paul tells us in Romans 1:18 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. In that case since we all sin, what chance can we have? In 2 Corinthians 5:18-19, St Paul gives us the answer. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. We are reconciled to God through the sacrifice of Jesus the Christ; he gave himself to allow us to stand before God and not be condemned. Jesus, who was without sin, took the burden of all our sin upon himself and reconciled fallen humanity with God. Really, after that what is there that you cannot forgive? I am tempted to say, how dare you claim to be unable to forgive those who have hurt you? Remember the words of Our Lord on the cross; in his final agony he said : Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34). Next month I will close out this series in a discussion of how we are to go about this forgiveness. In the meantime, let us love one another as Jesus loves us. In Christ,

SOULFUL MUSIC FOR ALL As furniture was being moved for the painting of the interior of the church, we found an electric bass guitar and a regular guitar stored away in a corner of the sound booth area. The instruments are now in the music room. I am wondering if anyone in the parish has any experience playing such instruments. Pieces could always be incorporated into the worship. Speaking of instruments does anyone play other instruments, such as trumpet, flute, clarinet or violin, just to name a few. Hymn accompaniments could always make use of a variety of instruments, and preludes and postludes could be programmed for a solo or group. I ll accompany. So please contact me. I am excited about the new wood laminate flooring, which will make the room more lively. I talked with an acoustical engineer who says the sound will improve, so that the spoken word and the choir singing will have more presence. But the most important improvement will be that the sound of congregational singing will be reflected up from the hard floor, rather than being dampened by the old carpet. We all will hear better and so can sing out more, kind of like the experience of singing in the shower! So sing to the Lord and make a joyful sound. John F. Geib, Music Director

Did you hear the collective sigh? That s the year-round volunteers breathing a sigh of relief. Help is finally here! It is with open arms that we welcome our northern cousins back. More hands mean less work. Less work means less stress. Better weather makes for better working conditions and a much happier crew. I can t thank my year round team enough. They ve worked short-handed and in some horrendous conditions. The heat and humidity have been wicked this summer. They ve stuck by the church, the store, and me! If you ve not worked here, you wouldn t understand. But, let me assure you, they deserve your gratitude, your praise, and your support. The Outreach Program doesn t take the summer off either. The Food Pantry provided food for 669 families in September: of which 933 were adults, 512 were children, and 254 were seniors. The hot meal was provided and served by All Souls for a total of 775 meals. The monetary value for September s Outreach Wednesday Clothing Program was $4,182. The Thrift Store income for September 2016 was $8, Sincerely, Dottie Brown, Mgr. While working in our Thrift Store, I found a wonderful book of photographs of places in Delaware. The book was signed by the Author - Kevin Flemming - a noted photographer for the National Geographic magazine. I purchased the book for $2.00 and gave it to my daughter who lives in Delaware. My granddaughter is studying abroad and had to take a gift from her home state to her host family. The book is now in Costa Rica -Perfect! Jean M. Cornwell
6 News From Your Parish Nurse I recently attended a wonderful presentation on Cross Training Your Brain and would like to share some of the ideas with you. The presenter spoke about the six components that he felt were essential to living a brain healthy lifestyle. These areas are physical, emotional, social, intellectual, purposeful and spiritual. He suggested that we each develop a plan for living a brain healthy lifestyle through the use of positive affirmations. Physical I will have a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and omega-3 fatty acids (e.g walnuts, almonds, cold water fish). I will engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise three times a week. I will get a good night s sleep. Emotional I will have a positive attitude and look forward to each new day. I will use humor to encourage my positive attitude. Social I will interact regularly with my friends and family. I will feel good about my friends and family and they will feel good about me. Intellectual I will learn something new each day. I will be a lifelong learner. Purposeful I will share my talents with others. I will volunteer on projects that will help other people. Spiritual I will take time each day to be thankful for the things around me and the world I live in. I will find time each day to nurture my spiritual life through meditation, prayer or reading. What are some of your own affirmations for each component?. Other important issues related to a healthy brain are concentration, focus, God directed activities, and having a higher purpose. There are a number of risk factors that we can modify to help improve our brain health. They include exercise, improving oral hygiene, not smoking, having a moderate alcohol consumption, managing hypertension, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, avoiding social isolation, decreasing bad stress and seeking help for depression. We can not change some of our other risk factors chronological age, family history, past head injuries and basic education. There are things we can do to promote a healthy brain: have a good, nutritious diet, take a multiple vitamin and an aspirin each day, do some moderate exercise, good oral care, have intellectual stimulation and social interaction, have a positive attitude and develop a good sense of humor. Here are a few positive activities to encourage an active brain, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, jigsaw and logic puzzles, and word games. Use your computer, tablet or phone to do memory exercises, brainteasers, IQ tests and other mind exercises. Many of these things are free. Thanks to Dr. Kevin O Neal for a fun and informative presentation. Keep your brain happy by continued learning and have fun. God Bless You and keep you safe in His Love Pat Epifanio, RN FCN, Parish Nurse A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION ALL SOULS EPISCOPAL CHURCH N. CLEVELAND AVENUE N. FT. MYERS, FL
