1 All Souls Episcopal Church Church Office SOUL (7685) Church FAX: Thrift Store: North Cleveland Avenue, North Fort Myers, Florida OUR MISSION STATEMENT All Souls is an Episcopal/Anglican Christian community in North Fort Myers whose members seek to advance the Kingdom of God through reaching out to and welcoming all persons. We strive to live our commitment to Christ by faithful worship, biblical preaching and teaching, prayer, and loving service. We believe that God loves you just as you are; and anytime you want to show up, please be our guest - we are saving you a seat! SUNDAY EUCHARIST Holy Eucharist 9:30 AM CHRISTIAN EDUCATION MUSIC MINISTRY Wednesday 3:30 PM CHURCH OFFICE HOURS Mon.-Thurs. 9 AM-3 PM Fri. 9 AM-12 PM THRIFT STORE HOURS Tues - Sat. 9 AM-4 PM May/June 2018 FROM THE RECTOR S DESK After the disciplined reflection of Lent we have the emotional roller coaster of Holy Week and then the joy of celebrating the Resurrection at Easter. For 50 days we maintain that celebratory mode as we await the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, this year May 20 th. Then comes the long season of ordinary time, when our liturgical color is green and the weeks go by with no major feast to prepare. What is this ordinary time, and how should we approach it from a Christian perspective? Ordinary time is ordinary because of what it is not: it is not Advent or Christmas or Lent or Easter. It is not, therefore, time during which the church is engaged in preparations for, or celebrations of, the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Ordinary Time is also ordinary because of what it is: it is the liturgical season that makes up most of our time thirty-three or thirty-four weeks of every year, depending on the dates of Epiphany and Easter. It is the time during which we are called, like the disciples, to follow Jesus, not because of the star that announced his birth, nor because of the excitement of the trip into Jerusalem and all that followed, but simply because he has said, Follow me. Unlike the excitement of Advent and Easter, this following of Jesus in ordinary time asks us to work and to persevere through all the trials of our lives. No earthquakes, no star in the east, just that quiet persistent voice of Jesus announcing that God is among us. In reality even the excitement of Christmas is not about the birth of Jesus the human being, but about the arrival of Jesus and therefore of God himself among us. That reality, that good news, is what we are called to share during ordinary time. The resurrection occurred on Sunday, the first day of the week, and the most important day of the week for Christians. As Saturday is the special day for Jews, so Sunday is the special day for Christians-the day of the new creation, the day of beginning again. On the seventh day God rested from his work. But on the first day God acted to re-create the world in the resurrection. Thus Sunday, the eighth day, brings creation and re-creation together in a very special way, and that s what we worship on Sundays. Thus, the Sundays of ordinary time are not so ordinary they celebrate the full story of God s action in history to save creatures and creation. This is the special nature of ordinary time. It is the day to celebrate the re-creation of the world. Peace and Joy in the name of Our Lord Jesus,

6 IRS Scam Calls Continue to Plague Lee County April 2018 As the IRS tax deadline quickly approaches, the Lee County Sheriff s Office fraud line continues to receive dozens of calls from concerned residents reporting suspicious phone calls from scammers claiming to be from the IRS. These con-artists are using fake names, fraudulent phone numbers, and bogus badge information to convince taxpayers they need to immediately pay up on delinquent IRS accounts, or face arrest. Some callers also report receiving a computer generated voice message requesting they immediately return the call to the Internal Revenue Service in order to take care of an urgent matter. This is an aggressive and sophisticated scam designed to trick victims through fear and deceitful tactics. The Sheriff s Office reminds you that the IRS will NEVER: 1. Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill. 2. Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. 3. Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. 4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. 5. Threaten to bring local police or other law enforcement agencies to have you arrested for not paying. If you think you are the target of an IRS impersonation scam, you should: 1. Hang up and call the IRS at IRS workers can help you with your payment questions. 2. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission 3. Call the Sheriff s Office fraud line at SOULFUL MUSIC FOR ALL Sumer ist iscumen in starts the old English madrigal. It is a long, hot and humid period without any major seasons or festivals. So it is a good time to sing some favorite hymns. This year we will Select Summer Song again. Printed below is a form to fill out and then turn in. There will be a collection basket at the back of the church. Your selections will start to be programed in June and run through September. Let us sing to the Lord. John F. Geib, Music Director
7 WEDNESDAY OUTREACH The number of people that are seeking our services at All Soul s Outreach Program continues to increase. Our monthly activity report for March follows. Activity Families 1484 Adults 899 Children 357 Seniors 228 Work Shoes 7 Bus Passes 24 Bikes 10 Locks 13 Lights 8 Tents 11 Sleeping Bags 6 Meals Served 713 Thrift Store Clients 258 Amount $4, All of this activity is made possible by the faithful service of our many volunteers. Historical Note SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is a cooperative program between the Florida Department of Children and Families and Harry Chapin Food Bank that offer food stamps to individuals and families in need. Single adult men and women who apply are requested to demonstrate that they are actively engaged in job search by working with the Department of Career Services or volunteer a minimum of 20 hours for a non-profit. Eligibility must be renewed every six months. Each Wednesday, Deima Torna, the SNAP Outreach Administrator, works at a table in the All Souls and is pleased to provide information and answer questions to serve our clients. Her phone number is In His Service, John & Cherie Martin, Co-Managers Harold Shirley Gary Judy Rita Leah Caroline Dennis Donna Dave LuAnn Julie Mary Z Dorothy W Barbara A THRIFT STORE This is a list of the Thrift Store team that have left for the summer. These volunteers covered 27 of the 50 slots necessary to run the store for a week 4 cashiers and 6 backroom people a day or 2 cashiers and 3 backroom bodies per shift. That would be ideal! But, 4 cashiers and 4 backroom is a necessity! I will close the store if there are less than 3 people per shift present. I plan to keep the same hours we had last summer: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 9:00 to 4:00. Wednesday hours will be 9:00 to 12:00 closing at noon. Right now I need 1 Wednesday morning cashier (8:30 12:30) and 2 Friday morning cashiers. Tuesdays and Thursdays are fairly well covered in the backroom. Fridays and Saturdays are pretty slim especially in the afternoons. I also need a commitment I will work in the backroom on Saturdays from 1:00 to 3:00 or I would be happy to fill the Wednesday cashier position. Whatever your schedule allows, please, consider giving a few hours of your time to the store. Sincerely, Dottie Brown, Mgr. Correction to last month s article: We reported that Robert Marrero (ARNP) serves as primary care physician for Family Health- Center. He is actually a Nurse Practitioner, not a doctor.
8 News From Your Parish Nurse My curiosity was piqued by an article regarding the Blue Zones. These are the five global regions of the world in which there are the largest number of centenarians. These regions include Japan, Italy, Costa Rica, and Greece. They shared their habits which may have helped them lead a long and healthy life. Consider adopting some or all of the Power 9. They may help you to add more healthy and wonderful years to your life. 1. Incorporate natural movement. Walk more and stay busy with activities which require movement like gardening, housework. Constant and moderate physical exercise and activity is recommended. 2. Find a purpose. Do something for others. It has been shown to add 7 additional years to your life expectancy. 3. Relieve stress. Find those things which help you relieve your stress meditation, napping, relaxing with a hobby or good book or nice drink. 4. Don t overeat. Finish eating before you are full. Leave some things on your plate. You do not have to be a member of the Clean Plate Club any more. 5. Eat more plants and less meat. Make vegetables, beans, nuts, and whole grains more a staple in your diet and enjoy meat once a week. Essentially, be a semi-vegetarian. 6. Cheers to your health. Enjoy a glass or two a day but do not overindulge. 7. Find a place you belong. Most centenarians belong to a faith community, and have a greater spirituality. The fellowship and support we find in our church is very beneficial. 8. Love your family. These elders suggest that you live in communities that welcome elders into the home, nurture children and honor commitment to a life partner. 9. Find your tribe. Having healthy friends that can help you engage in activities that could lengthen your life. They will help you to stay active. Having a healthy social circle and staying socially engaged is very important in increased longevity. Other life style issues to consider: Do not smoke, Enjoy the sunshine, Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, Do not snack between meals, and Promote a healthy immune system. May you be blessed with a long and healthy life. May God keep you healthy and happy. Pat Epifanio, RN, MS, FCN A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION ALL SOULS EPISCOPAL CHURCH N. CLEVELAND AVENUE N. FT.
