At the same time I want to voice our gratitude to our year round residents who manage all of our volunteer needs during the long summer months; thank you for keeping everything running. On Dec. 6 th we held our first Evensong jointly with Messiah Lutheran church. There were about 70 people present and I believe everyone was delighted to be reacquainted with this worship service. Throughout my formative years Evensong was a regular weekly service, and I still remember the sense of wellbeing that this sung worship provided. I hope that there may be a groundswell of enthusiasm for the reinstatement of this service as part of our worship, perhaps once a month. Please let me know what you feel about this concept. As I am sure you are all aware there have been more reports of violence and murder in church settings over the past few years. Your vestry is addressing how we might best prepare ourselves for the possibility of something awful like this happening at All Souls. We are in the process of forming a safety ministry team with the objective of our being as well prepared as possible. Members of the vestry, clergy, outreach and thrift store managers, ushers / greeters and any other interested members were invited to attend a seminar offered by the Lee County Sheriff s office on Dec. 20 th. Early in the New Year the Sheriff s office crime prevention group will review our facility and our outreach program in order to provide us advice on steps we should consider to reduce risk. Once we have all of the information we will put together a Safety Preparedness Plan and share this with you. It is intended that the plan will be comprehensive, addressing not only how to deal with a disruptive or dangerous intruder, but also safety in the event of accident or illness and preparation for weather emergencies. During our recent meeting with Irma, it was troubling that we could not locate some vulnerable members to check on them and we had no data base of everyone s intended actions regarding evacuation. As a loving and caring family we can, together, be better prepared to manage an emergency, and that is our goal. All of the above represents the start of what I expect to be an ongoing, planned preparedness program, enabling us to feel as secure as possible in our church and parish hall. There has been a great deal of discussion about having armed members of the congregation in church, and regardless of what our lawmakers in Florida may decide, guns will never be welcome at All Souls at any time. Yes, times are changed but with care and vigilance we can and will minimize the risks! In Christ,

SOULFUL MUSIC FOR ALL On January 6 the Twelve Days of Christmas are over and the season of Epiphany begins, lasting this year for almost six weeks. We celebrate Jesus coming of age and setting out on his ministry. Hymns feature the light of Christ: How Brightly Beams the Morning Star, Brightest and Best, Star of Wonder - Star of Light, Shine, Jesus Shine, This Light of Mine and I Saw the Light. 5 WEDNESDAY OUTREACH Well another month has gone by. We have been busy shopping for the children at Outreach and my house now looks like a toy shop. We are having our TOY DAY on Wednesday 20 th December at Outreach and also we are having a turkey Christmas dinner for our clients so everyone will be busy in the kitchen. Many thanks to all concerned in preparing the Thanksgiving lunch it was really a great meal. We were so blessed to have our prayers answered, we had requested a Grant that we had applied for in August from Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church and the amount they gave us was $ This will greatly help everyone concerned in the Outreach Program as our numbers are going up every week, It is with great sadness that John and I will be leaving our position in Outreach at the end of December and we will be handing it over to Cherie and John Martin who are very excited about taking on the reins. We are going to do some travelling and do some things we have wanted to do while we can also spend a little time in England with my family. But we will still be around. John and I would like to thank everyone who has made our life so easy in Outreach, you are all jewels, every one of you, so willing to help and nothing was ever too much trouble, thank you all so much. Our Outreach Mo Town dance night was so popular and a lot of people asked for another one so we are having a Flashback Dance on the 10 th February so keep the date open the group we have booked is fantastic, if you need any information ask John or myself I am printing the tickets next week. All proceeds will go to Outreach let this be a winner. Have a great Christmas and a very Happy and Healthy New Year. THRIFT STORE Here I am thinking once again and my team will tell you that is dangerous. Another year bites the dust. It s time to reflect on the old year and look forward to the new one - resolutions to be made and sometimes broken. That elusive concept of time: Father Time Never enough time Time is money Killing time Time to bake the doughnuts Time heals Time flies Daylight Savings Time Standard Time The list could go on and on. So, what about those who use their time wisely? I think the volunteers for the Outreach Program and Thrift Store fall into this category. These volunteers have chosen to give their time and energy to the ministries of the All Souls Episcopal Church. One of the reporters from a national news channel always closes his segment with I want to thank you for the privilege of your time. This is the thought I d like to convey to all the volunteers thanks for the privilege of your time and your company! William Penn said, Time is what we want most, but what we use worst. How do you use your time? If you spend 3 hours on the golf course; or 2 hours playing cards; or 4 hours watching TV, do you think you could spare equal time for your church? 6 News From Your Parish Nurse Wishing you a healthy and happy Christmas and holiday season. Here are some thoughts about staying well in this busy season. *Stay with your routine. Pace yourself. *Eat meals on your regular schedule as much as possible and eat smart. Don t skip meals before the party. Incorporate foods that are low in salt, fats and sugar- Skip dressings, butter and gravies. Increase your water intake and limit alcohol intake. Eat slowly. Avoid stressful topics of conversation. Use smaller plates and portion control. Use the 25/50/25 rule on your plate. 25% protein, 50% vegetables and 25% other foods *Keep your exercise routine. Make time for your walk, yoga class, etc. *Keep to your sleep routine as close as you can. Remember 6-8 hours of sleep each night, in a cool, darkened room, with limited distractions. Wear comfortable attire. *Schedule time alone and to recharge. *Keep up your spiritual disciplines - daily prayers and devotions. *Trust and act on your inner guidance. *Be thankful and see lessons and blessings in the season. *Be in good spirits, be compassionate. Smile often and Laugh a lot. *Remember you are special, and loveable. May this Christmas season be one of great joy as we celebrate the birth of our Savior.
