1 All Souls Episcopal Church Church Office SOUL (7685) Church FAX: Thrift Store: North Cleveland Avenue, North Fort Myers, Florida OUR MISSION STATEMENT All Souls is an Episcopal/Anglican Christian community in North Fort Myers whose members seek to advance the Kingdom of God through reaching out to and welcoming all persons. We strive to live our commitment to Christ by faithful worship, biblical preaching and teaching, prayer, and loving service. We believe that God loves you just as you are; and anytime you want to show up, please be our guest - we are saving you a seat! SUNDAY EUCHARIST Holy Eucharist 9:30 AM CHRISTIAN EDUCATION MUSIC MINISTRY Wednesday 3:30 PM CHURCH OFFICE HOURS Mon.-Thurs. 9 AM-3 PM THRIFT STORE HOURS Tues., Thurs. - Sat. 9 AM-4 PM Wednesday 9 AM-12 NOON July/August 2018 FROM THE RECTOR S DESK Our recent trip to the Holy Land was an immense joy and provided some much-needed corrections, at least for me, to my preconceived ideas about Israel. I am not about to embark on an account of our travels, but rather I want to talk a little about how my worldview was changed. First, there are Mosques everywhere we went. Because of their structure with a tall minaret, they are easy to spot as you walk or drive around. There are some 8 million people living in Israel, of whom 75% are Jewish, but the presence of Islamic worship centers is obvious. I understand from talking with our guides that there is much more tolerance between these 2 great Abrahamic faiths than our news media would suggest. In the Palestinian Territories of East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza there are some 4.5 million people, the clear majority Arab. We were in the West Bank cities of Bethlehem and Jericho, well away from Gaza for obvious reasons, and were welcomed and accepted everywhere. This was almost certainly the result of us being welcome tourists with a positive impact on a poor economy, since the very small numbers of Christians in both places continues to decline. Our visits to many of the most important holy sites in the Christian world was always colored by the realization of what a small footprint Christianity has in the Holy Land. For me this reinforced the need for us to continue to visit, to worship, and to be heard. Christianity cannot be allowed to disappear in this place. I was not prepared for the emotional response to walking in the places where Jesus and his disciples walked. At the Temple in Jerusalem I was grateful for the opportunity to pray at the Western Wall, to place a prayer for peace in the cracks in the stones; but I cried as I stood on the steps to the remains of the southern wall and contemplated the route our Lord actually took as he entered and left that great building which stood there 2000 years ago. The Holocaust Museum, and especially the Children s Memorial, had a profound effect. As it was meant to do, this memorial reminds us loudly and clearly that we can never again allow such monstrous madness and evil to take hold. We must be eternally vigilant. Among the millions who were murdered, there were one and a half million children. Yvette and I wondered aloud how long it takes the recorded voice to list the names and ages of all those children. I realize in reading over what I have written, that it sounds kind of gloomy and sad, but that is far from the impression I received and want to share. This is a vital and active land, with modern cities, communications, technology, and transportation. There is wonderful food and wine, and gracious hospitable people. But the great lesson for me was that we can and must embrace these modern things without losing sight of the values which history provides. We are building on the foundations of the past, not the rubble to be forgotten. Shalom!

6 SOULFUL MUSIC FOR ALL I recently played a movement from the Variations on Come Creator Spirit by Nicolaus DeGrigny ( ). Several people said they liked it. The style shows the height of the French Baroque, a body of compositions I grew to like years ago after attending a workshop on that music. By the time you read this I will have played selections from the Suite on the Second Tone by Louis-Nicolaus Clerambault ( ). Other composers of that era to be heard in the near future are Francois Couperin ( ), Jean-Francois Dandrieu ( ), and Louis Claude Daquin ( ). Daquin is especially noted for his arrangements of French Christmas Carols. The music is often lively, using reeds and mutation stops called a cornet, a tierce or a nazard. This music is filled with ornaments, such as trills and mordents. The Plein Jeu (full organ) is a combination of the principal stops from 8 ft to mixturs. The Grand Jeu (grand organ) includes reeds and principals (without Mixturs) plus the cornet sound. Finally, it is the middle of summer, so keep selecting those songs! John F. Geib, Music Director Summer Travel Safety Tips Are you planning a summer vacation overseas or perhaps a get-a-way close to home? If so, you ll want to pack these safety tips while traveling as a reminder to protect yourself from scammers and identity thieves. 1. When booking flights, hotels, and rental cars it is always best to use a credit card instead of a debit card. A compromised debit or ATM card can quickly leave you with a drained back account. 2. Take out information inside wallets and purses that are not needed for travel, including your social security card. Miscellaneous credit cards, and other documents that can be used by criminals to steal your identity. 3. Password protect your smart phone in case it is lost or stolen to prevent someone from finding out personal information stored on your phone such as photos, s, etc. 4. Use only secure WiFi networks that require passwords and turn off the WiFi connection settings to your smart phone. Beware of internet cafes, hotel computers, or other public internet access places where hackers are known to troll. 5. If possible, use an ATM located inside a building and tear up your receipts immediately. Be careful not to flash your cash and as a precautionary measure, don t keep all of your money in one place. 6. Most hotel rooms have a safe so guests can lock up valuables and documents. This is the safest place to keep what is important to you, not in your suitcase or under the bed. 7. Don t use your passport for all identification needs. Lock it up and use either your driver s license or an identification card at restaurants and entertainment places. For more information about this safety and security tip, or to report a fraud or scam, contact the Lee County Sheriff s Office fraud line at

7 WEDNESDAY OUTREACH Activity For May 2018 Families 1935 Adults 1151 Children 410 Seniors 324 Work Shoes 5 Bus Passes 29 Bikes 3 Lights 3 Tents 9 Sleeping Bags 5 Meals Served 883 Thrift Store Clients 389 Amount $4, All of this activity is made possible by the faithful service of our many volunteers. On Wednesday All Soul s is a beehive of activity with over 30 volunteers engaged in delivery of a variety of services directly to our clients. Equally important but less visible is the preparation that happens the day before. On Tuesday about between 1500 and 5000 pounds of food is delivered from Harry Chapin Food Bank to All Souls where it is unloaded and staged in the crib. A separate delivery of bread and desserts is also delivered by Wake Up America. All this food plus all of the hygiene products we have on hand are organized by about 15 volunteers. They load about 175 bags of groceries for pickup by clients on Wednesday. On a monthly basis Harry Chapin also delivers packages of Care and Share Food for clients 60 years or older delivered on Tuesday and given out on Wednesday. Service Highlight In addition to serving over 700 meals a month, the All Souls offers our clients bicycles and bus passes providing transportation to jobs and medical appointments. David and Beth Scarborough serve at the Bike and Boot Table offering bicycles, bike tires, tubes, safety lights, batteries, and bike locks as well as tents and sleeping bags to those who are homeless. Work Boots are also provided to our clients. Bug spray is a popular item for those sleeping outside. The table also provides a mail stop for those without an address. The Boot/Bike Table provides basic humanitarian services continuing a tradition begun over 30 years ago by Harry Chapin. For additional information or questions about the services of the Bike/Boot Table contact David Scarborough at THRIFT STORE The Thrift Store is on fire! Yes, summer is here and the back rooms are like ovens. The fans are working overtime as are the volunteers the fans trying to move humid air and the volunteers trying to process all the donations we are receiving. We always seem to need more bodies. Our reputation has grown. According to our clientele, we are the BEST little thrift store; so they recommend us to all their friends especially for donations. We really need more help on the linen table. Sharry (Slaughter) could sure use an extra set or 2 of hands when she s measuring and folding those humongous comforters and bedspreads. The Eaglesfields (Valerie & John) have certainly helped fill the void left by many snowbirds. They jump from antiques to toys to cashiering! Speaking of cashiers The cashier ranks are getting a little sparse. We need a permanent cashier to work Wednesday and Friday mornings. We also face trying to cover numerous vacations. (Imagine the nerve of some people to take a vacation from the store!) Of course, there are those who go to extreme lengths with extended hospital stays (like Darcy Jackson) to avoid another Thrift Store summer. There is a new position being started. We are hoping to entice a church member to volunteer Fridays and Saturdays as assistant manager. This would be such a blessing for me by lightening my load. I have to commend the Vestry. Many of them have stepped up investing numerous hours of sweat equity to your store. A short reminder We have started our summer schedule. The store is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 to 4. On Wednesday we close at noon. If anyone asks, we also stop accepting donations at 3:00. This gives the sorters a chance to play catch up before leaving. Sincerely, Dottie Brown, Mgr. Fr. Creighton Evans There will be a funeral service for Fr. Evans on July 14 at 10 am at St. John s Parish Church in John s Island, SC. If you would like to send a card to Nina you may do so at the following address: Ms. Nina Evans c/o Dr. Deidre Evans-Garriott 25 Beverly Ct. Apt 1 Lexington, VA 24450

8 News From Your Parish Nurse We are heading into the summer Be on Guard when it s hot. We enjoy the warm, sun filled days here in Southwest Florida doing many fun filled activities picnics, boating, just enjoying nature, to other outside activities. But as the outside temperature rises, our body temperature must remain in a tight range. Our body rids it self of excess heat, mainly by cooling through the evaporation of sweat. Our body mechanisms can only do so much. We need to be aware of the signs of heat illness and take appropriate action. It can occur rapidly if you are exerting yourself or exercising in the hot weather, or it can come on slowly over a period of days even without exertion and in those who have limited access to air-conditioning This is most common in older adults who have risk factors for heat stress. Heat illnesses can range from mild to severe to life threatening. Taking thoughtful precautions can prevent most heat illness but it is important to recognize the early signs and take corrective action. As older adults, we are at a higher risk for heat-related illness in part because of our age. Our internal cooling mechanisms tend to decline over time and certain diseases and conditions increase our susceptibility, these include heart and lung diseases, diabetes, obesity, poor fitness, impaired mobility or cognitive issues can interfere with the body s natural cooling process. Some prescription medications can also pose a problem. These may include diuretics for high blood pressure, beta blocker heart drugs, antidepressants and antihistamines. The best prevention is to stay in the air-conditioning. You can still exercise do it at the mall. Drink right Increase your intake of cool non-alcoholic beverages that are not too sugary. If you are on a fluid or salt restriction, be sure to ask your physician if there are any changes in these restrictions due to the increase of temperature for the summer. Cool down Cool baths, showers, or swimming can help you to cool down. Fans can help to a point but they are not very effective when the temperatures rise to upper 90s. Take frequent breaks in the shade or in a cool space when you must be outside. Dress for the weather Wear loose-fitting, light colored and light clothing that allows air to flow over your skin. Protect yourself from the sun and sunburn by staying in the shade. Wear a broadbrimmed hat, use lots of sun screen and reapply it often. Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day Plan errands and activities for the morning or evening when it may be cooler. Scale back your pace in the hot weather and take frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioning. Heat cramps, limb swelling (heat swelling) Signs include muscle cramps and/or leg swelling. Rest, sip a sports drink or water. Elevate legs or use compression stockings. Heat exhaustion Signs include heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, weakness, rapid pulse, nausea. Body temperature remains near normal and mental state is normal. Move to cooler location, loosen the clothing, apply cool water to the skin, rest, sip a sports drink. Get emergency help if signs persist or worsen. Heatstroke Hot skin, with or without sweating, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fast pulse, confusion or agitation, loss of consciousness, seizure. Body temperature approaching 104 degrees. This is a true emergency and requires immediate action. Call 911. Immerse in cold water if possible, apply cold, wet towels, let a fan blow across the person, and apply ice packs to neck, armpits and groin. Get help. Stay Calm.
