One suggested I put it in the bulletin. I think the message is unique and good. I am told it was in the Beaver County Times. I hope you enjoy it. A Good Drug Problem The other day someone at a store in our town read that a metha amphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county. He asked me a rhetorical question, Why didn t we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up. I replied that I had a drug problem when I was young. I was drug to Church on a Sunday morning. I was drug to Church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter what the weather. I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn t put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me. I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profanity. I was drug out to pull weeds in Mom s garden and flower beds and cockleburs out of Dad s fields. I was drug to the homes of family, friends and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline or chop some firewood. And If my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed. These drugs are still in my veins and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say or think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack or heroin. If today s children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place. God bless the parents who drugged us. Bill Dunn, Ambridge COVERED DISH DINNER Mark Your Calendar for February 19 All women of St. John of God Parish are invited to come spend an enjoyable evening with the Women s Guild at their Covered Dish Dinner on Tuesday, February 19, at 6 PM in the Social Hall at Mother of Sorrows. 5 PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone This is Catholic Schools Week. At St. John of God, we are fortunate to have a Catholic School of our own. At St. Catherine, many of our children attend neighboring Catholic Schools. And of course at both parishes, large numbers are alumni of our Catholic School system. We all know the quality of "knowledge" that our schools produce. But we are more interested in the total "formation" of the person than just communication of facts. The following meditation, which I have edited, originally came from Andy Rooney of CBS fame, but it outlines many of the "soft tissue issues" that are the hallmark of Catholic Education. Our students learn things like these, and much more! "I've learned...that the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person. I've learned... That just one person saying to me, 'You've made my day!' makes my day. I've learned... That being kind is more important than being right. I've learned... That you should never say no to a gift from a child. I've learned... That I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way. I've learned... That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with. I've learned... That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand. I've learned... That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes. I've learned... That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for. continued next column.. HOMEMADE GNOCCHI We will be selling two pound bags of homemade gnocchi in the Pizza Kitchen on Fridays during Lent, but we need volunteers to help make them. Please join us to help make the gnocchi for this endeavor on Monday evening, February 4, at 6 PM in the Pizza Kitchen at the social hall. The Lenten season is always a busy time in the Pizza Kitchen, so please consider volunteering a few hours on a Friday. Men and women of all ages are welcome and no experience is necessary! For more info, please call Linda at Hope to see you there! CONGRATULATIONS We wish to congratulate John and Gizelle Fedorka who are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on Monday, January 28, May the Lord continue to bless your years together. I've learned... That money doesn't buy class. I've learned... That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular. I've learned... That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved. I've learned... That to ignore the facts does not change the facts. I've learned... That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you. I've learned... That love, not time, heals all wounds. I've learned... That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am. I've learned... That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile. I've learned... That life is tough, but I'm tougher. I've learned... That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss. I've learned... That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere. I've learned... That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them. I've learned... That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks. I've learned... That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it." BLESSING OF THROATS We will bless throats in St. John of God Parish after all Masses celebrated for the weekend of February 2/3.
