Box 10355, Danville, VA Church Phone: (434) Fax: (434) It is with mixed feelings that I announce to our congregation that our organist Tim Montgomery is retiring from service on April 27, Tim has been a faithful and dedicated keeper of the keyboards at Christ Church over the last four years. As you may already know Tim retired from Averett University last year. It his wish that he and his wife Betty Lou pursue their retirement unencumbered and with much vigor. More than our organist I consider Tim to be a good friend. His talents and wisdom extend well beyond his musical duties. He will also assist us in our quest for a new organist. We all at Christ Church wish Tim and Betty Lou every happiness in their retirement. The choir will be hosting coffee hour to celebrate Tim and his dedication to our church. Palm Sunday Service April 13th, 9:00am Seder & Maundy Thursday Service April 17th, 6:00pm Good Friday Stations of the Cross Service April 18th, 6:30pm Easter Service April 20th, 9:00am Shaun C. Anderson There will be an Easter Egg Hunt after the Easter service for the kids. There will be a clean up day at the church on May 3rd from Mark your calendars and plan to roll up your sleeves for a little spring cleaning! Please bring in any candy or eggs that you can donate for the egg hunt by Sunday, April 13th. The children always enjoy this part of the Easter Day service. We may even have a visit from the Easter Bunny!

2 Ladies of Christ Episcopal Church Thank you, ECW, for the hard work and good food that was prepared for Bishop Hollerith's visit. I think we showed our hospitality and made him feel right at home. Many thanks to Sherry for the added touch with the St. Patrick's Day decorations! Her Irish Bishop made our Bishop smile! Thank you for your caring response when we lost Charlie. We had a very large number in attendance and, most importantly, Lucille and her extended family expressed their heartfelt thanks for all that was done. Bishop Hollerith Visit & Confirmation On Sunday, March 16th Bishop Hollerith joined us for Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. The confirmands included Angela Snead, Danielle Snead, Jackie Wilson, and Anna Ballenger. Cathy Ballenger reaffirmed her Confirmation as well on this special occasion. Looking ahead, spring is almost here! It is time to start thinking about our yard sale and health fair. If you find some items that you can live without while spring cleaning, keep the ECW yard sale in mind. May God continue to bless us in all we do! Yours in Christ, Janis, ECW President

3 The Pancake was held Tuesday March 4th in the Hall. The food was delicious and the decorations were a great way to celebrate. Thank you to all the members that made this event possible. This event is always a great time to fellowship with each other and begin the Lenten season. T h e S u n d a y School class has been learning about Lent and the p e r i o d o f t i m e leading up to Jesus crucification. We have been discussing our faith in Jesus and understanding God s timing for events in our lives. We have been working on several songs to sing at Easter. The children are also becoming friends and learning more about each other each week. It is a pleasure to teach your children and share God s message with them. 4 Charlie W. Baynes Charlie Baynes, loving and faithful member of Christ Church passed away Tuesday, February 25th surrounded by his family. A memorial service was held at Christ Church on Friday, February 28th with Father Ross and Mother Helen officiating. A service at Highland Burial Park and luncheon back at the church followed the service. Charlie will be missed by his family, friends, and church family. Speakin of Charlie, hey, did ya hear the one about. " I suspect many of Charlie Baynes conversations in coffee hour began with, Hey, did ya hear the one about. and then great laughter (sometimes knee-slapping, footstomping laughter) would inevitably follow shortly thereafter Charlie telling a joke from his collection. " I also suspect that every woman in church knew not to extend their hand when greeting Charlie during the Peace or any other occasion, as that would never do. No, no, we all knew that Charlie was a hugger, and all the women quickly learned to greet him with open arms for a great big Charlie Baynes bear hug. " As much as Charlie was about fun and laughter and love, he was just as much about doing the right thing by each other and helping out with whatever the church needed. You could count on always finding Charlie at the fundraisers and helping with anything that needed to be done at church. I know that if you were lucky enough to flip pancakes or help make stew with Charlie Baynes, you were guaranteed to laugh and have a lot of fun! " Many of us personally know of times when Charlie was working quietly behind the scenes to help the church, or reaching out to help those of us struggling or trying to find their way back to the church. Charlie Baynes was a "stand up" kind of guy who stood up for his church, who stood up for his country, and who stood up for his family and friends. " So Charlie, my dear good friend, on behalf of the church you so dearly loved, the women you so heartily hugged, and all the people you helped and made laugh again and again and again, a heartfelt thank you to you, and to your beloved Lucille who so graciously shared you with all of us. Undoubtedly, you live on in the great many that you touched with your love and your laughter. Heaven has been enriched with a special angel in your arrival. Oh, and by the way, Charlie, did ya hear the one about.. " In loving memory from a grateful friend

5 Members in the News Anna Ballenger won First Place for the fifth grade at the Stony Mill Elementary School Science Fair held on March 21, Anna's project, I See vitamin C, answered the question "Which fruit juice contains the most Vitamin C?. She also tested the juices to find out how much vitamin C they really contained by comparing a known standard made up of a vitamin C tablet. Anna did this project because she wanted to find out which fruit juice is best to drink to get the most vitamin C. Anna tested the following juices for vitamin C: orange, grape, pineapple, lemon, apple, tomato, and grapefruit. Her hypothesis was correct that orange juice contained the most vitamin C. The judges reported that they really liked that Anna tested so many juices and repeated her experiments on each juice three times. She also did calculations to determine exactly how many mg of vitamin C each juice contained in an 8 oz. glass. One 8 oz. glass of orange, grape, pineapple, or lemon juice contains the U.S. recommended daily amount of vitamin C. Of the juices she tested, grapefruit contained the least amount of Vitamin C. This is the third year in a row that Anna has placed first in the science fair at her school! Way to go Anna! A disease called scurvy which affects the bones and teeth can happen if people do not take enough vitamin C. After some research, Anna formed her hypothesis: "I think that orange juice will have the most vitamin C of the fruit juices tested. The chemical name for vitamin C is ascorbic acid and to find out how much ascorbic acid there is in each juice, Anna made a solution containing corn starch and iodine. When vitamin C or ascorbic acid is added to the corn starch/iodine solution, a reaction takes place and the vitamin C breaks up the complex which causes the blue color to fade. O be joyful in he Lord all ye lands; serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
