A Letter From Diego Dear parishioners of St Mary s, In 2012, I arrived in the United States. My first assignment was this great parish of Saint Mary. My goal was to learn the English language and to know the culture. What I found here was much more than that, it was a true family this has been an incredible blessing! With joy I share with you that on Sunday, 21 May I will be ordained a deacon through the laying on hands by Cardinal Joseph Tobin at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. The ceremony will be at 12 Noon. It means a lot for a vocation to feel the love and support of those who become our extended family. You are my family, I cannot be more thankful for all your prayers, love and encouragement. I will be saying my first homily on Saturday, May 27th at the 5:30PM Mass. A light reception will follow in the church basement. Thanks once again, and I hope to see you there! - Diego Navarro St. Mary s Prefect Meeting There will be a Prefect Meeting on Monday May 22nd at 7:00 PM in the Parish Conference Room. All prefects are urged to attend. Decisions regarding the Fall fundraiser will be made at this time. Please make every effort to participate as your thoughts and ideas are needed. Blood Drive - May 28 The Community Bloodmobile will be in front of the rectory on Sunday, May 28 th. Please mark your calendars. Thanks to the donor to the December drive. 3 First Holy Communion For the past three weekends we have had the joy of sharing in the celebration of 81 of our boys and girls coming to the table of the Lord's Supper for the first time. We hope that this is a day that helps them begin their spiritual journey in an even more personal way. Each time that we receive the Eucharist, Jesus gives us His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity to nourish us on our journey of life. This spiritual food gives us the power to love. Today in the Gospel of John, we hear Jesus tell his disciples that He is going to send them an Advocate to be with them. This Holy Spirit that Jesus promises is given to each of us so that we can follow Jesus command to love one another. Loving people sounds easy, but can be challenging to actually do. We are called to love those that hurt us or are indifferent to us. We are called to love even when it is not convenient or profitable to us. We are called to love and live out God's love each day. That is tough stuff!!! Jesus never promises that it will be easy, but He does promise that He is there with us through it all. He gives us not just a promise, but also the sustenance, His own Body and Blood to go through the twists and turns in life. God also gives us the Holy Spirit to direct us and to give us the graces and gifts that we need to love as He loves us. As we watch these young people, filled with joy and excitement for their First Holy Communion, we welcome them to the table of the Lord s Supper. They have heard the voice of Jesus calling them to this table so that His Body and Blood can nourish them. Let us continue to pray for them that they may always follow Jesus example of love. We are Living Stones The Archdiocese welcomed 499 catechumens and 693 candidates at the Easter Vigil on April 15. Catechumens receive the sacraments of initiation Baptism, Confirmation and first Communion during the Easter Vigil, having prepared for this moment through RCIA. Candidates, who are already Baptized, also go through the preparation program to receive confirmation and first Communion. The Parish Renewal Fund, established by the We are Living Stones Campaign, will all parishes to apply for grants to enhance their evangelization efforts as well as Religious Education Programs. 5 There was great joy in that city. Acts 8:8 Today we skip to the 8th chapter of the Acts of the Apostles for a reading titled: "Philip in Samaria. Philip was one of the assistants chosen by the apostles in chapter 6. Here's the back story: Some of the Jewish community has converted to Christianity. Others are pushing back and persecuting Christians. The most famous of these is Saul who later becomes Paul, after his conversion on the road to Damascus. The Samaritans pay attention to Philip. Unclean spirits are excised and the paralyzed and crippled are cured. This is even before the "big guns" (Peter and John) leave Jerusalem to lay hands on them. They must have been really good Samaritans. (I couldn t resist the pun.) This attentiveness to the word of God leading to great things provides me with the opportunity to share an idea that has been percolating for several weeks. Back in theological school I learned of a concept which affects churches known as The Slow Buffalo. Here s how it works: The group is advised of a need. Everyone mutters an excuse and runs away as fast as possible leaving the slow buffalo with the job. Stories of the vibrant and growing Christian community of Acts cause me to wonder why today s church can be so disconnected from their energy. They also fuel my desire to go beyond my assigned role to ACT more like them. The antidote to the slow buffalo might be found in the fable Stone Soup. The people s attentiveness and willingness to act causes great things to happen. (Soup from a stone.fancy that.) Our social concerns ministry is an list of 40 people willing to act from time to time in response various needs. Future goals are twofold: 1. Add more people to the list 2. Create a talent bank of skills to be applied to needs that arise Here s what you can do: Add your name and to our list. Remember "Acts" is not just a name. It is a verb.
