Choral Evensong For the Sixth Sunday of Easter May 10, 2015 Saint Paul s Episcopal Church 22 East Chestnut Hill Ave Philadelphia, PA

Ann Stookey Memorial Recital 4:30 p.m. A committed member of the Saint Paul s choir, Ann Stookey ( ) held Saint Paul s Aeolian-Skinner organ in high regard, and this instrument played a major role in her musical experience here that she valued greatly. Upon her death, Ann s family and friends set up a fund in her memory that will secure the future condition of the instrument, enabling others to enjoy the instrument as much as she did. The Ann Stookey Music Fund supports the ongoing maintenance of the instrument and provides funding for projects that further the enjoyment and role of the instrument at Saint Paul s and in the wider Philadelphia community, such as this evening s recital. Organ Recital Karl Robson, Organist PROGRAM Symphonie III, Op. 28 Louis Vierne ( ) I. Allegro maestoso II. Cantilène III. Intermezzo IV. Adagio V. Final At the conclusion of the last piece, Choral Evensong will begin with the Procession and Introit. Please greet the artist at the reception following the service. Karl Robson is an doctoral student of David Higgs. He serves as the assistant organist at St. Paul s Episcopal Church, Rochester, New York, playing its recently restored E.M. Skinner instrument. In 2012, he graduated magna cum laude with departmental distinction in Church Music and Organ Performance from St. Olaf College, where he was a student of Dr. Catherine Rodland. In 2013, he earned an MM from Eastman. He began his organ career at age 11. A three-time recipient of the organ studies scholarship awarded by the Southeast Minnesota Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, he previously studied with Lee Afdahl of First Presbyterian Church, Rochester and Dr. Dean Billmeyer of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. At St. Olaf, Karl served as a weekly organist for daily chapel services, worked as a Music Theory and Aural Skills teaching assistant, and sang in the St. Olaf Choir. He was honored to accompany the choir as organist on its 2011 domestic tour. At Eastman, he works as an Aural Skills teaching assistant, and teaches secondary organ. Choral Evensong - p. 2

Choral Evensong: Rite I We invite you to join as an active participant in the worship of God. Please join in the singing of hymns in and speaking of text in bold print. We always welcome children during worship, as they are a vital part of our church. We encourage you to help your child navigate through this evening s service. 5:00 p.m. The Rev. E. Clifford Cutler, Rector The Rev. Emmanuel Mercer, Assisting The Choir of Saint Paul s Church Zach Fritsch-Hemenway, Choirmaster Joseph Russell, Organ Scholar THE INTROIT (sung by the choir) Healey Willan Rise up my love, my fair one, and come away. For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear upon the earth. The time of singing of birds is come. Arise my love, my fair one, and come away. OPENING SENTENCES The people stand at the procession. Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2 To the only God our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen. Jude 25 THE INVITATORY set to music by William Smith O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. Sung by all. PHOS HILARON: HYMN 34 The people are seated. Innisfree Farm Choral Evensong - p. 3

THE APPOINTED PSALM Psalm 34: Benedicam Domino Choral Evensong - p. 4 Anglican Chant: C.F. South 1 I will alway give thanks unto the LORD; * his praise shall ever be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD; * the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3 O praise the LORD with me, * and let us magnify his Name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me; * yea, he delivered me out of all my fear. 5 They had an eye unto him, and were lightened; * and their faces were not ashamed. 6 Lo, the poor crieth, and the LORD heareth him; * yea, and saveth him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of the LORD tarrieth round about them that fear him, * and delivereth them. 8 O taste, and see, how gracious the LORD is: * blessed is the man that trusteth in him. 9 O fear the LORD, ye that are his saints; * for they that fear him lack nothing. 10 The lions do lack, and suffer hunger; * but they who seek the LORD shall want no manner of thing that is good. 11 Come, ye children, and hearken unto me; * I will teach you the fear of the LORD. 12 What man is he that lusteth to live, * and would fain see good days? 13 Keep thy tongue from evil, * and thy lips, that they speak no guile. 14 Eschew evil, and do good; * seek peace, and ensue it. 15 The eyes of the LORD are over the righteous, * and his ears are open unto their prayers. 16 The countenance of the LORD is against them that do evil, * to root out the remembrance of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth them, * and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a contrite heart, * and will save such as be of an humble spirit. 19 Great are the troubles of the righteous; * but the LORD delivereth him out of all. 20 He keepeth all his bones, * so that not one of them is broken. 21 But misfortune shall slay the ungodly; * and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. 22 The LORD delivereth the souls of his servants; * and all they that put their trust in him shall not be destitute. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON: Acts 10: While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. Reader: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE MAGNIFICAT: Evening Service in C My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen. THE SECOND LESSON: 1 John 5:1-6 Bryan Kelly Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. Reader: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Choral Evensong - p. 5

THE NUNC DIMITTIS: Evening Service in C Bryan Kelly Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen. The people stand and chant together: THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE PRAYERS The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. set to music by William Smith The people kneel. All: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Choral Evensong - p. 6

Ofiiciant: Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us. and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the State. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy holy spirit from us. THE COLLECTS O God, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man s understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards thee, that we, loving thee in all things and above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give thine angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for thy love s sake. Amen. The people are seated. THE GREETING The Rev. E. Clifford Cutler During the singing of the following anthem, an offering will be taken to support choral music at Saint Paul s Church. This evening s service of worship is made directly possible by your contributions. THE ANTHEM Richard Wayne Dirksen Sing, ye faithful, sing with gladness, wake your noblest, sweetest strain, with the praises of your Savior let his house resound again; him let all your music honor, and your songs exalt his reign. Choral Evensong - p. 7

Sing how he come forth from heaven, bowed himself to Bethlehem s cave, stooped to wear the servant s vesture, bore the pain, the cross, the grave, passed within the gates of darkness, thence his banished ones to save. So, he tasted death for all men, he, of human-kind the head, sinless one, among the sinful, Prince of life, among the dead; thus he wrought the full redemption, and the captor captive led. Now on high, yet ever with us, from his Father s throne the Son rules and guides the world he ransomed, till the appointed work be done, till he see, renewed and perfect, all things gathered into one. Sing, ye faithful, sing with gladness, till the appointed work be done, him let all your music honor, let us his house resound again; sing, ye faithful, sing with gladness, and your songs exult his reign. Alleluia. Amen. The people stand and say together: THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving kindness to us and to all thou hast made. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. A PRAYER OF SAINT CHRYSOSTOM Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee; and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. Choral Evensong - p. 8

THE BLESSING All: Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen. HYMN 191 Lux eoi Please remain standing as the procession leaves the church. All are invited to a reception in the Parish Hall following this service. Services of Choral Evensong will resume on September 13. Choral Evensong - p. 9

MAKE A DONATION SUPPORT THE CHOIRS If you would like to support the choral programs at Saint Paul s, contributions are welcome at any time. Though the parish budget supports music on Sunday mornings, services such as tonight s Choral Evensong are largely funded by your additional gifts. Please help us keep the Anglican choral tradition alive by giving generously in this evening s collection. We appreciate these gifts. Checks may be made out to Saint Paul s Episcopal Church, with Music designated on the memo line. SUPPORT THE ORGAN Ann Stookey ( ), a committed member of Saint Paul s Choir for many years, often spoke of her love for the organ at Saint Paul s. It was an important part of her worship experience here. After her untimely death in 2012, Ann s family and friends established a fund honoring that experience. The Ann Stookey Fund for Music at Saint Paul s Church endows our Aeolian-Skinner organ in perpetuity, insuring the future mechanical and musical integrity of this remarkable instrument. Included in the brief are routine maintenance costs and ongoing restorative work. The Fund will also help defray expenses for special events (recitals, concerts, etc.) that feature the organ. Checks should be made out to Saint Paul s Episcopal Church, with Ann Stookey Fund for Music on the memo line. Gifts of any size are gratefully received; those of over $1000 allow the donor(s) to adopt a stop on the organ! GENERAL INFORMATION A descriptive booklet about the organ is available on the information table at the back of the Nave. Inquiries about gifts (including planned giving) or any other aspect of our music program may be directed to: Zach Fritsch-Hemenway Director of Music and Organist Saint Paul s Episcopal Church, 22 East Chestnut Hill Avenue, Philadelphia PA Contact: zhemenway@stpaulschestnuthill.org, or (215) , extension 35. 11 ABOUT SAINT PAUL S All are welcome to worship at Saint Paul s, with no exception. We value our diversity of age, spiritual engagement, religious background, race, sexual orientation, and gender. There are visitor cards in the pews if you wish to express your interest in connecting further with Saint Paul s. Music plays an important role in the worship God at Saint Paul s Church. You can hear the choir every Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. service of Holy Eucharist. ABOUT SAINT PAUL S MUSIC The music ministry of Saint Paul s Episcopal Church exists to provide meaningful music for our community in the worship of God. We also believe that our music is not just for our parish, but the entire community. Saint Paul s choirs comprise more than 85 singers, and opportunities for involvement span all ages. There are also non-singing opportunities for those who would like to serve on the music guild and help with day to day operations of the music program. If you are interested in joining us in our work, contact the Director of Music at the church office. SUNDAY MORNING There is choral music each Sunday morning at the 10:30 a.m. service of Holy Eucharist. This service is sung by the accomplished Saint Paul s Choir. Twice a month, our choristers join the adults and form an intergenerational choir in the Anglican tradition. In addition, our cherub choir learn to be leaders of liturgy by participating in the 9 a.m. service once a month. ABOUT THE ADULT CHOIR AND CHORAL SCHOLARS Saint Paul s Adult Choir is comprised of approximately 50 members, both professional and volunteer, who come from a variety of musical backgrounds. Membership through audition is open to adults and boys with changed voices. We sing the 10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist during the program year in addition to monthly Choral Evensong. The Choral Scholar program connects aspiring high school musicians to an intensive choral experience designed to give them experience in a semi-professional setting and a window into the requirements of being a professional musician. The Choral Scholars sing as a part of the Adult Choir. ABOUT THE CHORISTERS The Saint Paul s Chorister program is a multi-faceted musical opportunity for boys and girls ages 8 and up. Our emphasis is on the education and development of each child. During rehearsals, we learn healthy vocal technique, how to read music, and how to be leaders within our community. The choristers perform both on their own, and with the accomplished Saint Paul s Adult Choir, giving our youth the opportunity to perform with professional musicians from throughout the Philadelphia region. Our young singers also have the opportunity to study a musical instrument, for which a limited number of scholarships are available. The study of a musical instrument greatly reinforces the music skills taught in choir. For our Chorister program and Choir School, no prior musical experience is required and you do not have to be an Episcopalian or a member of Saint Paul s Church to join. Choral Evensong - p. 11
