Like you, I spent some time counting the many things I am grateful for. It was quite a long list. Specifically, I want to offer my gratitude to those who contributed to the Starbucks gift card; you can be assured that I will be awake and jazzed for the holidays! My favorite part of that is the opportunity to keep reaching out to people who may not feel comfortable talking in a church. Believe it or not, lots of ministry can happen at Starbucks. I also want to thank the mysterious gift card angel who has left some delightful cards on my desk. My favorite is a thank-you for disrupting your lives! We can thank the Gospel for that and I pray that we will be disrupted, surprised, and delighted during the Advent season. I also thank the Vestry for my being able to participate and engage in the Congregational Enrichment Venture for our Diocese. I will be gathering information to use for vestry retreats and to share in this Midweek so please stay tuned. Again, I want to thank you all for modeling Christ in your lives, allowing His light to shine through broken places, and for being that light to those who

3 desperately need it. Blessings, Joy Congratulations to our three new Vestry members John Yates, Thomas Archer and Karla Moons. Welcome aboard! Diocesan delegates: Nancy Howell, John Yates, Lois Bolter and Alternate delegates: John Hicks, Marilyn Cepeda, Carol George. Life Changes Support Ministry Please note that the 4:00 TUESDAY Life Changes Support Ministry has been combined with Wed. night at 6:00 in the library. Anyone is welcome. Contact Sue Rollins for more information. Last chance to order Dec. 4. Scrip reminder: the Christmas gift giving season is right around the corner, and there will only be one more scrip order placed before then. As an added bonus, low denomination gift cards are available for a limited time from the following retailers: Amazon.com ($10), Barnes & Noble ($5), CVS ($10), Darden Restaurants - Olive Garden, Longhorn ($10), Home Depot ($10), IHOP ($10), Panera Bread ($5), Starbucks ($5), Target ($10), Wal-Mart ($10). If you are interested in purchasing any of the special low denomination cards (great for small stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, mailman gifts, etc.), it is recommended that you do so in the November order, since they tend to run out of them. A complete list of retailers can be found at shopwithscrip.com, or you can pick up a local order form in the church office. Contact Lella Lowe for more information, or her with your order, at rollread@bellsouth.net. Poinsettia signup is on the Flower Chart. Cost is $12.50 each. 5 Episcopal Church of the Redeemer The Artists Place Gallery From Facebook Thanks.. by Sean Dietrich A Cornucopia of Art During the month of November, the Artists' Place Gallery at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer will be exhibiting the works of Anne Brooks, Gail Bramer, Catherine Kiser and Nancy Milford. All artists are members of the Coastal Alabama Botanical Artists Circle but will have a variety of subject matters from botanical to wildlife -and even some small sculptures -Just as life on the coast is a balance of a variety of systems so is our show! Come enjoy a Cornucopia of Art. The exhibit will be on display from November 4 through December 30 and may be viewed, by appointment, by contacting Rob Bearden at Dear God, It's me again. Actually, I don t know what you want me to call you. For all I know, you might prefer to be called something Hebrew, Latin, German, or Cherokee. Anyway, one thing s for sure: you re older than the names people call you. That much I remember from Sunday school. My mother called you, The Lord. My granny called you Heavenly Father. My uncle used to call you the "Big Guy." Either way, I was raised in church, and I remember hearing a lot about you in the tiny chapels of my childhood. I love those chapels. I remember plaster ceilings which leaked, and pews that creaked when people shifted weight from cheek to cheek. And Sunday-school teachers who made you sound like an old Western sheriff who wouldn t take any lip. Like Wyatt Earp, or the Terminator. But that s not you. Not at all. And even though I don t know a lot about you, I know a little. I know that you re the sun. You re pine trees. You re the sky over Lake Martin. The smell of baked apples Mother used to cook. And prettiness. You re the look on a kid s face when he or she catches a fish. You are every blessed Andy Griffith Show episode

6 ever made. You are Aunt Bee, Opie, Barney, Otis. You had absolutely nothing to do with Matlock. You are guitar music my uncle used to pick. You re popping noises from hickory logs in a fireplace. You re salted butter. Roasted pecans. Bottled Coca- Cola. And loyalty from a friend. You ve done things. And I m not talking about big things everybody knows you make the earth spin and stars twinkle. No. I m talking about tiny things you've done. Like how you managed to let me find a wood figurine my grandfather carved. It s a buffalo, and it's almost a hundred years old. I found it packed in an old box. Then there s the time I got locked out of my house. I was carrying armfuls of groceries. My wife was out of town. And I had to pee. It was a miracle. The back window was open. That was all you. How about the way you made it rain last week? Or the way you woke me up this morning. This Thanksgiving morning, my eyes opened to see a gold-colored sky during sunrise. There was a bloodhound on my bed curled at my feet, snoring. A woman beside me, sleeping with her mouth open. The same woman who s slept beside me for fifteen years. So I should thank you for her. And the coffee smells every morning. And Conecuh sausage, and eggs I eat for breakfast. And my mother. And soft cotton. My sister. My niece, Lily. And baseball. And tomatoes. And the sound of a mandolin. And the taste of rainwater. I don t thank you nearly enough, and I m sorry about that. I really am. Because even though life is no cakewalk, and even though it looks like this world is practically falling apart sometimes, it s not. And you re still here. Being yu. I m sorry, I don t know what your ancient name is, so I ll just call you God. Thank you, God. Your friend, Sean Dietrich You can find more of Sean s writings on his Facebook page Around the Diocese The 47th Annual Convention of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast will be held Thursday, February 22 to Saturday, February 24 at St. Andrew's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Destin, Florida. Lay delegates are canonically required to be elected by December 24, 2017 (60 days prior to Convention) in order to have vote at Convention. (If you are interested in attending, please nominate yourself or have someone else nominate you at our parish meeting. We are always looking for people who are interested in attending.)
