Recently, I overheard a comment on our Stations of the Cross in our Queen of Peace Chapel. It went something like this: You know, the Stations of the Cross they have in this chapel aren t the real Stations, because they include a 15th Station on the Resurrection. Everyone knows there are only 14 Stations! If I hadn t been in the middle of a service at the time, I wanted to say with St. Paul: Without the Easter Event of the Resurrection, YOUR FAITH IS IN VAIN! Jesus death on the cross and his being laid in a tomb is not the end of the story. In our creed we profess to believe in the Resurrection of the Body and life everlasting! I have been meditating on this reality more lately as I keep vigil with Fr. David Cottingham in the Palliative Ward at St. Paul s hospital. I keep whispering to him that I will see him on the other side. There is more to life than this earthly reality! My faith depends on that! This mystery has its highest expression in our liturgy of HOLY THURSDAY, GOOD FRIDAY, AND EASTER VIGIL. You ll notice I made liturgy singular. We have three services but they are one liturgy that begins on the evening of Holy Thursday and ends with the Easter Sunday. That is why you ll notice there is no closing hymn on Holy Thursday, no gathering hymn on Good Friday, no closing hymn on Good Friday, and no gathering hymn at the Easter Vigil. These are meant to be a seemless celebration of the Paschal Mystery. AND THIS IS THE HIGH POINT OF THE LITURGICAL CALENDAR FOR CATHOLICS! I find it somewhat surprising that while the Good Friday service gets a lot of attention and attendance, the other two parts this Liturgy, Holy Thursday and Easter Vigil don t attract the same number of people. Once a year we are asked to journey with Jesus from the Table of Service on Holy Thursday, through His passion and death, and then to the power of the Easter Mystery of his Resurrection. If we only come for the Good Friday part, then I would be less surprised at those who remain stuck on the 14th Station Have a deep Holy Week, my friends! Small Christian Church Group Although we may have people around us all day long, many of us still long for deeper conversations (and conversion) about one of the most important things in life, our faith life. From the very beginning, the Church has often grown and thrived among small groups of disciples. We see this in the Bible and throughout the history of the Church. Small groups have 3-12 members that meet regularly for fellowship, encouragement, discussion and spiritual growth. While some are responding to the Gospel of conversion, others can be strengthened in their interior life. A small group will be starting after Easter and is open to all singles, couples, men and women. The first gathering will take place in the on April 8th at 7:30 pm. We will discuss the general structure and format of an evening, when and where we will meet, the topics we can study. For more information and the meeting location please contact Jocelyne Hamoline during regular office hours at or jhamoline@dscatholicfoundation.ca.
