There are many times in the scriptures where someone has their name changed. It is meant to signal a sacred intervention by God into human history. The Birth of John the Baptist is one of those events. Although it was traditional to name John after his father (Zachariah), God had other plans for the role of the one who would prepare the way for the Messiah! The profound message of John s birth is to catch a glimpse into the modus operandi of our God. God has a PLAN for God s people. God creates a world that readies itself for the birth of His Son! John the Baptist will play a huge role in ushering in the Reign of God. From his infancy, Luke tells us that John spent his childhood growing in strength of spirit out in the wilderness. Whenever you hear a reference to the wilderness, you can be sure that God has a hand in the direction of salvation history. Divine intervention begins with a mission completed by human beings. If God were to give you another name, just know that something big is going to happen through you. Come to think of it, God did that when you were named at your baptism. Just like John s parents, the priest or deacon begins the baptism ceremony with the question: What name do you give your child? This is a sacred trust and a sacred act to name a child. With that name, they will identify themselves for the rest of their lives! This weekend, we celebrated the ordination of two young men dedicated to the mission of Jesus. Frs. Hoang Nguyen and Gregory Roth have accepted the mission and life of proclaiming the Reign of God in the midst of God s people. Let us pray for them and their life of ministry. May they grow and become strong in spirit, as preparers of the way of the Lord!
