2 The Palmetto State Bulletin 2 December 2013 From the Vocations Director James P. Weiskircher, Vocations Director Please remember to keep our seminarians in your prayers as they complete their finals and head home for the Christmas break. From the State Deputy Holy Family Light Our Way In Love and Charity Here it is December and the first half of the fraternal year is over. It is time for each council to review their programs and events to determine which are deserving of special recognition. To get that recognition, they must be written up and submitted to the Service Program Awards Chairmen. The Mid-Winter Meeting and Charity Ball will be held at Our Lady of the Hill s Parish Center on Saturday, January 25th. Grand Knight s, Financial Secretaries and Program Directors should attend the meeting. All brother knights and their wives are encouraged to attend the Charity Ball. Come and enjoy the music and dancing. Councils, Assemblies and Squire Circles are required to complete the Fraternal Activity Form and submit it to Supreme no later than January 31, Any 3rd degree knight that would like to be a state officer or a delegate to the Supreme Convention, must submit and original and seven copies of his resume to me no later than January 15, Our membership continues to grow and we are able to continue our good works for our community, churches, youth and the pro-life movement. Presently, our recruiting is not where it should be. Give a Catholic gentleman the opportunity to become a better Citizen, Catholic and Father by asking him to become a Brother Knight. More members mean more men to assist our charities. Remember, One New Member Per Council Per Month. Many thanks for the knight s and their families that do something extra for families that are homeless and hungry. Thank you for being a South Carolina Knight and Spreading Gods Love. Because of your generosity we were able to give the Sisters at Kingstree 31 Christmas trees and over $3000. Thank you for being so generous. Please say an extra prayer that all our deployed troops remain safe and return to their family soon. I want to add my thanks and gratitude to all our brother knights who served in the military and helped this nation remain free. Loretta and I want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Vivat Jesus Richard A. Gabriel, State Deputy Christian Gaeta 1 st Pre -Theology Holy Trinity Seminary Irving, TX Home Parish: Stella Maris, Sullivan s Island Christian was raised in a loving, supportive, Catholic environment. He is the youngest of three children. His childhood was happy and nurturing. Christian was educated in Catholic schools from middle through high school. He excelled in honors classes and enjoyed running and surfing. In college he continued to excel in academics at Clemson. Having the opportunity to live and study in Australia for five months helped him to become self-sufficient and responsible. Ever since high school, Christian has been open to the call to the priesthood. All plans for the future have revolved around this aspiration. After attending discernment group meetings, his spiritual growth took a giant step forward. He delights at the prospect of learning about Theology, philosophy, and the Catholic Church. The desire to be self-sacrificing in the service to others is a trait that he hopes will make a good priest. Christian is an Eagle Scout and this past summer, he was an advisor on the St. George s Trek, which was founded by Bishop Guglielmone, at the Philmont Scout Ranch in the New Mexico Rockies.

3 The Palmetto State Bulletin 3 December 2013 HOLY FACE A HISTORY OF THE DEVOTION Submitted by Rev. Stanley Smolenski, Shrine of Our Lady of South Carolina 1. IMAGE NOT MADE BY HUMAN HANDS : A tradition from apostolic times tells the story of an image of the Holy Face of Christ not made by human hands. It is linked to a cure of King Abgar IV of Edessa. This tradition links the Apostle St. Jude as the bearer of the I m a g e. That is why he is pictured with an image of the Holy Face. Later it was acquired by the emperor in Constantinope. This tradition persevered in the Eastern Church. It was believed that the Crusaders took this image from Constantinople to the West. Eventually a Veronica s Veil was kept and venerated in St. Peter s Basilica in Rome. In the fourteenth century there also arose the belief that the Holy Shroud of Christ was found and venerated in France. A few centuries later it was transferred to Turin, Italy. Belonging to the Royal Family it was rarely exhibited. The last king of Italy willed it to the Pope on condition that it remain in Turin. This emphasized the sorrowful face of Jesus. 2. SISTER MARY ST. PETER: Carmelite of Tours, France The beginning of modern revelations about devotion to the Holy Face originates here. Revelations: Golden Arrow - Prayer of Reparation for blasphemy Those who contemplate the wounds on my Face here on earth shall contemplate It radiant in heaven. These revelations were silenced until the following archbishop approved all in 1876; Pope Leo XIII approved the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face in 1885; Eventually this spread throughout all the Carmelite monasteries. 3. LEON DUPONT [Venerable] knew Sr. Mary St. Peter and promoted devotion through his miraculous Oratory of the Holy Face in Tours for 30 years; 4. ST. THERESE OF LISIEUX: Bl. Louis S. Martin, Father of St. Therese, visited the Oratory in Tours and enrolled his entire family in the archconfraternity. The sister of St. Therese, Pauline, Mother Agnes of Jesus, introduced St. Therese to the Holy Face Devotion. The foundress of the Lisieux monastery, Mother Genevieve of the Holy Trinity, had introduced Pauline to it. St. Therese s complete name is of the Child Jesus of the Holy Face. Celine, her sister, stated in her book about Therese that unless you know her devotion to the Holy Face, you do not know Therese. St. Therese wanted Celine s Carmelite name to be Mary of the Holy Face but because Mother Genevieve died shortly before Celine s reception of the habit, the chaplain wanted Celine to have the name of the foundress. But Celine added on and of the Holy Face. St. Therese made a Mass chasuble with a portraying the Holy Face on it. Celine painted a Holy Face that became popular. This devotion was important to her especially when suffering. St. Therese spread devotion to the Holy Face through her autobiography. 5. THE HOLY SHROUD OF TURIN: With the photos of the Holy Shroud of Turin publicized in the 1890 s, interest in the Holy Face became world wide. 6. BL. MARIA PIERINA DE MICHELIS: Beatified 2010 A Daughter of the Immaculate Conception in Italy, she had extraordinary graces from childhood. Her revelations regarding the Holy Face started in Each time my Face is contemplated, I will pour my love into hearts and through my Holy Face the salvation of many souls will be obtained. The Blessed Mother showed her a scapular with Holy Face on one panel with the biblical phrase, May the light of your Face shine upon us. On the other panel there was a host with rays and the biblical phrase, Remain with us Lord. [Emmaus]. Our Lady approved the medals. In 1939 Our Lord requested that his Holy Face be honored especially on Tuesdays with a Feast of the Holy Face on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday [Mardi Gras] which was approved by Pope Pius XII. [Holy Face was connected to the Eucharist in this message. The OT Show Bread has Eucharistic significance and Bl. John Paul II will refer to the Eucharistic Face of Jesus.] 7. THE HOLY VEIL OF MANNOPELLO In the late 1990 s a new dimension in the contemplation of the Holy Face was introduced with the popularization of the Veil of Mannopello as the authentic image of the resurrected Christ. The Sorrowful Face on the Turin Shroud and the Living Face of Mannopello have produced the Holy Face in the context of the Paschal Mystery. 8. BL. JOHN PAUL II In his Apostolic Letter at the beginning of the new millennium Novo Millennio Ineunte he stated that the great legacy of the Jubilee Year of 2000 that opened the new millennium was the contemplation of the face of Christ in his historical features and in his mystery [15]. Section II is devoted to A Face to Contemplate. In this way he extends the contemplation from just the Passion to the entire life of Christ. In the very opening paragraph of his Apostolic Letter On the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Holy Face continued on page 6

5 The Palmetto State Bulletin 5 December 2013 Patriot s Corner Michael Mika Master, South Carolina District DeSoto Province See the Vice Supreme Master s Message From the Vice Supreme Master Gary Mc Lain, PSD, VSM De Soto Province Worthy Masters and All Sir Knights: I start my monthly message by giving a special thank you to all the Assemblies that marched in a parade, held a special event, provided bingo/meals to hospitalized veterans or visited our VA facilities over the Veteran s Day holiday. I am positive that they all appreciated your efforts. On November 2, 2013, an Exemplification was held in Duluth, Georgia where 132 new Sir Knights including two Priests received the honor of the Fourth Degree. This was followed by an Exemplification on November 16 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico where 21 new Sir Knights including one Priest received their Fourth Degree. A final Exemplification for the month of November will take place in Orlando, Florida. A large class is expected. No Exemplifications are scheduled during December in our Province. I understand a concerted effort is being made to fill the three openings for the VAVS Representative and Deputy Representative that are open in the DeSoto Province. I appreciate the efforts to fill these positions. Congratulations go to Sir Knight Joseph M. Rynne of Assembly 1850 in Florida for being chosen as the VAVS Male Volunteer of the Year in the DeSoto Province. His resume has been forwarded to Supreme for the competition as Volunteer of the Year for the Order. The judging of this level will be completed in December. We have reached the point in the fraternal year when we start to ask for the Annual Fraternal Activity Report. As you know, EVERY Assembly is required to file this Report no later than January 31, This is NOT in conflict with the Fraternal Activity Report filed by the Councils. Information on the Assembly Report differs from the Council Report. Let s make an all out effort to get 100% of these Reports forwarded in a timely manner. Remember, original to Fraternal Services in Supreme with copies to the Vice Supreme Master, District Master and Assembly file. An early reminder is that January 2014 is the time for the Renewal of Vows at the Assembly meeting. Dress for this meeting is the official dress for the Fourth Degree (tuxedo). Why do we do this in January? It marks the start of the second half of the fraternal year. We are reminded of the vows we took in ALL four Degrees. Our batteries are recharged so that we are eager to carry on our mission for the second half of the fraternal year. During this Christmas season, please remember our Military Chaplain s Scholarship Fund. Make your donations payable to Knights of Columbus and place Military Chaplain s Fund on the check memo line. Mail donations to Gary L. McLain, VSM, 36 Currant Avenue, Middleburg, FL Please DO NOT mail your donations to Supreme. They need to come through me to Supreme so proper credit can be given to your District. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at (904) or garymc36@comcast.net. Joan and I wish all a very Blessed and Merry Christmas and a Happy and Holy New Year. Fraternally, Gary L. 6 The Palmetto State Bulletin 6 December 2013 Holy Face continued from page 3 Pope John Paul II states: With the Rosary, the Christian sits at the School of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on the Face of Christ and to experience the depths of his love. The importance of this Marian dimension is emphasized.: To contemplate the Face of Christ, and to contemplate it with Mary, is the program which I have set before the Church at the dawn of the third millennium, summoning her to put out into the deep on the sea of history with the enthusiasm of the new evangelization. It seems that by this he proclaimed not just a year but a millennium dedicated to the Holy Face. In his Apostolic Letter Ecclesia de Eucharistia St. John Paul II referred to the Eucharistic Face of Christ and dedicated section six to The School of Mary, Woman of the Eucharist. Because of these papal emphases on her relationship to the Holy Face, a School of Mary, Woman of the Holy Face of Jesus seems logical. 9. POPE BENEDICT XVI will continue with this theme. In his Regina Caeli reflection on 2 May 2010, he stated that The Virgin Mary is the one who more than any other person, contemplated God in the human face of Jesus in Mary s heart the mystery of the Face of Christ was preserved From her, we can always learn to look at Jesus with love and faith, and to see in that human face the Face of God. 10. THE HOLY FACE OF KINGSTREE: The Shrine of Our Lady of South Carolina Our Lady and Mother of Joyful Hope in Kingstree SC - commemorates the Holy Face in the Paschal Mystery visually. The Sorrowful Face is portrayed in the carved Stations of the Cross. The Risen Christ is presented in an original Byzantine Icon of the Holy Face which was enthroned in the sanctuary on 13 October 2013 the Marian Day in the Year of Faith to respect the directive of St. John Paul II to contemplate the Face of Christ with Mary. This Icon was acquired through very providential and unforeseen circumstances. A hymn was composed to honor The Holy Face of God in this Shrine. The theme of seeking the Face of God begins in the Old Testament and is fulfilled in the New Testament with the coming of Christ, God and man. Presented according to the stages of salvation history, the progression of this theme is described in this prayer/hymn. This is in accordance with Pope St. John Paul II s perspective: in his historical features and in his mystery. He also stated that the School of the Rosary is where we can contemplate the Holy Face of Jesus with Mary. Therefore the mysteries of the Rosary form the part relating to the life of Our Lord. The theme of each verse is as follows: [1] Promised Face, [2] Incarnate Face, [3] Joyful Face, [4] Luminous Face, [5] Sorrowful Face, [6] Glorious Face, [7] Eucharistic Face, [8] Beatific Face, [9] Venerated Face.
