2 My From the Desk of our Grand Knight Bill Hooks My Brother Knights, CONGRATULATIONS COUNCIL 1668 As your Grand Knight, I was privileged to accept the 2012/2013 "Star Council Award" on behalf of council 1668 at the exemplification in Spartanburg on January 18th. Many Thanks to all my Brothers who dedicated their time and effort in recruiting new members into the Knights of Columbus, that resulted in this prestigious award. I ask that all join me in welcoming our two newest members, Philip Evans and William Stewart, into our ranks. Also, congratulations to Brother Jason Koenig for taking his 3rd Degree Exemplification on the 18th. Jason has excepted two positions that I asked him to assume for the rest of the Council fiscal year. Effective immediately, he will be our inside guard and membership chairman. I'm sure that everyone will give Jason 100 percent cooperation when asked to assist him in his new positions. Thank you Jason for stepping up. We need to recruit at least 7 new members to join us to make Star Council for this fiscal year. WE CAN DO IT. Invite a qualified catholic to join us NOW. We will have a membership drive in March, but come on Brothers, let's not wait until the last minute, invite someone TODAY. We will have a Council planning session on Monday, February 10th, 7:00 PM. The Council 1668 activities calendar for the 2014 year will be decided at that time. Anyone who has an upcoming event or program planned in 2014, needs to attend to insure it gets on the calendar. We want to make sure that we don't have overlapping events or to many scheduled in a given month. Please make plans to attend. I would like to reiterate what I stated when becoming your Grand Knight. I emphasized the importance of our families and having them be a part of Council 1668 and the Knights of Columbus. Our family values and dedication to them are the life blood of our Catholic Fraternal Organization. I have encouraged my Brothers to bring their families to many of our Council events that are suited for that purpose. Many of you have involved your families in the various charity fund raising events and other council activities, Thank You. I would hope that all our families feel like they are a part of Council I never want any Brother to feel he has to choose between his family and the Knights of Columbus. WE ARE ALL FAMILY. Remember to pray for: our country, our leaders, our men and women who serve in the military, our Holy Catholic Church, our Pope, Priests, and Religious, our Seminarians, especially Roger Morgan, all who are in distress or need, Pray for each other, and May GOD BLESS OUR FAMILIES. Vivat Jesus 8 PM at Council Hall The first Thursday of each month is reserved for the Fourth Degree Assembly. The second Thursday of each month is for the Council s Business meeting. The third Thursday will be reserved for Corporation and/or Committee Meetings when called by the Corporation President or Grand Knight. The fourth Thursday of the month will be a social meeting. Good of the Order All our brothers, their wives and/or widows who are sick or in distress. Our extended family who need our prayers. All the unemployed due to business closings seeking employment, 50 Million aborted babies since the Roe vs. Wade decision. All Firemen, Policemen, Servicemen, Priests, Religious Persons, Seminarians and Caregivers.

3 From the Desk Of Dee Hooks, President As proclaimed by the Pope, this is our Year of Hope. My hope for our LA is for each of us to grow in our faith by learning more, doing more and sharing more. For it is our faith that strengthens our commitments and dedication to works we do for our Lord. I am in hopes that we can strengthen our auxiliary and thereby help to strengthen our Knights council. In January we have collected many ideas for 2014 events. Now it s up to all of us to make these plans become reality.by doing so we will demonstrate our faith to the community and each other. Let s dig in and get on with our best year ever! Our next meeting is scheduled for February 27 th. I hope many of you will join us. 4 Icon of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception During the week of February 1 through February 7 an ICON of "Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception" will be displayed in the Church. There will be a prayer program with the ICON on Wednesday, February 5 starting at 5:15. ThisICONisbeingprovidedby the Knights of Columbus. This is the 16th prayer program of the Knights of Columbus to use a sacred image as its centerpiece. The first cathedral in the New World north of Mexico was named for the Immaculate Conception, and the bishops of the United States named Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception as the patroness of the nation. The image used for this prayer program is a reproduction of a painting of Mary as the Immaculate Conception that hangs above the main altar of the Basilica-Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Québec. It was painted in 1925 by Sister Mary of the Eucharist, a Sister of Charity of Québec, to replace the 18th-century painting destroyed during a fire at the cathedral in In 1664, Bishop François de Laval designated the cathedral as the first parish church of Québec and named it Notre-Dame de l Immaculèe Conception (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception). At the time, the Diocese of Québec encompassed all the North American possessions of France, from the Atlantic Coast in Canada to the plains of the far West, plus the Mississippi Valley and Louisiana territories an area far larger than all of Europe. The cathedral celebrates its 350th anniversary in A jubilee year will run from Dec. 8, 2013, to Dec. 28, 2014, to mark the cathedral s historic status as the first parish and first cathedral of Canada, and its role as the mother church to all parishes in Canada and the United States. The ICON will also be at St. Anthony's on a date to be determined.

5 I Corinthians 13 Valentine s Day is a day of love, For showing that we care, And if we read the Bible, God describes love there: If we speak like celestial angels From heaven up above, All our words mean nothing If we don t have Christian love. Love is patient, love is kind; It doesn t brag or boast; Love conquers pride and envy; It is never self engrossed. Love is not rude or angry; Forgiveness counters wrong; Love stays away from evil; It sings a truthful song. Love is full of trust and hope; It always perseveres; Love never fails; It s faithful; To the Bible it adheres. The wife said, You should do it, because you get up first, and then we don t have to wait long to get our coffee. The husband said, You are in charge of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job. Wife replies, No, you should do it, and besides, it is written in the Bible that the man should do the coffee. Husband replies, I can t believe that, show me! So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says... HEBREWS St. Valentine In today s world, we view Saint Valentine as the Saint who assists us in finding a lover and all the other rituals we have that is associated with February 14th such as giving cards, chocolates, jewelry, or sending flowers from the florist. Roses are the traditional flower to give on this day of lovers. There is a very different reason that San Valentin, or St. Valentine, is associated with love and lovers. Saint Valentine, born in Italy and was a Holy Priest in Rome, assisted martyrs under persecution and was beheaded on the date that is set aside for lovers February 14th. Before capture, he assisted St. Marius and family to give aid and safe lodging to those being sought out for their religious beliefs. Knock on wood Often we use the phrase, Knock on wood and proceed to do just that: knock on a table or a door or whatever wood is handy. Most do not know that the origin of the phrase and practice comes from the rosary. Rosaries in the old days were made of oak wood and were fingered in time of distress or trouble. Thus, holding on to or rubbing the wooden rosary or its wooden crucifix when danger was near became a common way for Christians to deal with hardships and difficulties. The practice slipped into common use as Knock on wood.

10 Insurance For 2014 Where did 2013 go? It seems like it was summer yesterday and Easter was last week. I hope you and your family had a great finish to Now, the first quarter of 2014 is flying by. Hopefully, you ve established a few goals for this year. I ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions. First, write them down. It s not too late if you haven t already done this. Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it. It may not make sense at first, but I m sure you have heard stories of the success this simple task can bring. Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television, you re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down. Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances. I recommend that you have a team of experts help you, and I would love to be the first you sit with. Let s schedule some time to meet together, and I, your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, will provide an insurance check-up (at no cost!) that will evaluate any gaps in your family s life insurance protection. Now might be the perfect time to fill those gaps, not later. Keep in mind that unlike many other products, you don t just need money to obtain life insurance; you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change. Did I mention my check-up is free of charge? When was the last time you received something for free that could provide value to you and your family for generations? Call me today.
