This is the first time that the Knights of Columbus has been honored with this award, which recognizes organizations that continue to raise the bar on ethical leadership and corporate behavior. World s Most Ethical Company honorees understand the correlation between ethics, reputation and daily interactions with their brand and that the award belongs as much to their associates as it does to them. The Knights is one of only two companies in the life insurance category honored this year. Today, those same founding principles are at work in every aspect of our business, guiding our corporate governance, our professional agency force, our investments, and our day-to-day business operations. It is this continued commitment to our foundational, Catholic principles that is the key to our ethical, sustainable and successful business model. The entire community of World s Most Ethical Companies believe that customers, employees, investors and regulators place a high premium on trust and that ethics and good governance are key in earning it, said Ethisphere Chief Executive Officer Timothy Erblich. The Knights of Columbus join an exclusive community committed to driving performance through leading business practices. We congratulate everyone at Knights of Columbus for this extraordinary achievement. 2 The Palmetto State Bulletin 2 April 2014 From the State Deputy Holy Family Light Our Way In Love and Charity Last year at this time we were basking in the glow and joy of the selection of our new Pope Francis. Some of that newness has faded but we must keep in mind what his first words were And now let us begin this journey, (together) as bishop of people. This journey of the Church of Rome, which is to preside over all the Churches in charity. It is a journey of fraternity, of love, of trust between us. Let us always pray for one another. Let us pray for the world, so that a great brotherhood may be created. As knights this should be how we think and act because we are a great brotherhood whose principles are Charity, Unity and Fraternity. We knights should and must have a concern for the poor and needy. This concern has a great impact on our communities and our neighbors. It is unfortunate that we sometimes over look our principle of charity to our brother knights. Another bit of noteworthy news is that last month 42 brother knights took their 3 rd degree and your councils brought in 57 new knights. A job well done. Remember, as our numbers continue to grow, we have the opportunity and manpower to do more. Our Church, Community, Youth and the Pro-life movement are the benefactors of our growth. We are making a difference and with this growth we can make an even bigger difference. We are South Carolina Knights Spreading Gods Love. We have just completed 9 months of the fraternal year and much has been accomplished. In the remaining 3 months we can do even more. I urge you to continue your efforts. Let s make it a very strong Race to The Finish. Be on the lookout for the exciting new incentives being offered by Supreme and the State Council. I urge you to take advantage of these new incentives. If your council was unable to conduct a church drive in March, I urge you to get one scheduled in April or May. Remember the Power of One, one new member per council per month. Star Council is still in reach for many of you. The 93 rd State Convention in Myrtle Beach is just 2 weeks away. Joe Dumovich, DD#3, Frank Davis, DD#11 and their convention teams have a great program planned for the brother knights and their ladies. It is not too late to register. I can t State Deputy continued on page 6 From the Vocations Director James P. Weiskircher, Vocations Director Holy week is the most important part of the year in the Catholic Church with the death and Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. On Holy Thursday, we celebrate the founding of the priesthood. In the Diocese of Charleston, one third of our priests are home grown, one third are on loan from other diocese, and one third of our priests are from a religious order. We need to ordain 5-6 priests a year just to keep up with our priests that are either retiring or dying. This year, we will be ordaining Javier Heredia. Javier grew up in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and worked from age six to help provide for his family. He was lost in the violence and poverty, which was prevalent in his town, until a priest talked with him about Jesus and His love for us. He entered the seminary in 1993, but had to leave to help his family. After working for 10 years, the Bishop of Charleston invited him to join our Diocese. Javier believes God sent many people in his life to make God s Love known and to affirm his vocation. He re-entered the seminary in He is looking forward to serving God and the people of the Diocese of Charleston. Javier helps to fill a critical shortage of priests to help serve the rapidly growing Hispanic population in our state. We are very fortunate to have Javier in our diocese. In our diocese, we have six priests from the Adorno Order that serve us at Immaculate Conception in Goose Creek, St. Philip Benizi in Monks Corner, Jesus, Our Risen Savior in Spartanburg, Our Lady of Peace Mission in Bonneau, prison ministry, and the campus ministry at Wofford and Converse College. This year, the Adorno Fathers will be ordaining two young men, Brother Arnel Hagos and Brother Armound Hagos, twins. Brother Arnel and Armound have both spent time in the diocese at various parishes during the summer. Please keep Javier, Arnel, and Armound in your prayers as they prepare for their ordination.

3 The Palmetto State Bulletin 3 April 2014 From the Pro Life Chair Couple Gary & Teresa Bays gary_bays@hotmail.com 6 Scottbine Court, Greer, SC ( ) cell Another Successful 40 Days for Life. During this Holy Lenten Season, many of our Brothers, their wives, children and parishioners contributed in a positive way toward expressing their Catholic thoughts on the right to live from conception to natural death. I am sure lives were saved and life was chosen over abortion. South Carolina is that much closer to having another ultra sound unit in Lancaster which will be No. 8 for us. Camden is now on the list to be No. 9 with their application being submitted to Supreme for approval to formally start their fundraising for that unit. During the month, we were fortunate to meet with Shawn Carney, the National Campaign Director of 40 Days for Life, who visited the Upstate, the Midlands and the Low Country and offered his encouragement and enthusiasm to continue the good fight. Shawn had never been to South Carolina to witness our effort and went away pleased with the dedication, love and sincerity of our program. We have made such great progress by supporting this program, that there has been a shift in the majority of Americans who are now of the opinion that abortion is killing and disapprove of early termination of infants. As we celebrate our Risen Savior this Easter, let us take great pride in the fact that the Knights of Columbus, in South Carolina, are Spreading God s Love. Thank you for your prayers, rosaries, candlelight vigils, hours in adoration and sidewalk counseling to speak up for the unborn. The most recent ACE WINGS were presented to Shawn Carney (Nat l Campaign Dir. 40 Days), Richard Grindle, Council & his wife Evelyn, Col. Crosby Livingston, Council 6892 & his wife Rose Anne, as well as Council 6892 (GK Dante Tomasini) for their financial support of South Carolina Citizens for Life. Please see photos submitted. Ethical continued from page 1 The World's Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute s Ethics Quotient framework. The Ethics Quotient framework has been developed over years of effort to provide a means to assess an organization s performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics. The Ethics Quotient framework and methodology was determined, vetted and refined by the expert advice and insights gleaned from Ethisphere s network of thought leaders and from the World s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel. Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (25%), reputation, leadership and innovation (20%), governance (10%), corporate citizenship and responsibility (25%) and culture of ethics (20%). The full list of the 2014 World's Most Ethical Companies can be found at wme-honorees/. About the Ethisphere Institute The Ethisphere Institute is an independent center of research, best practices and thought leadership that promotes best practices in corporate ethics and governance and enables organizations to improve compliance, mitigate risk, and enhance relationships with employees, business partners, investors and the broad regulatory community. 5 The Palmetto State Bulletin 5 April 2014 Patriot s Corner Michael Mika Master, South Carolina District DeSoto Province See the Vice Supreme Master s Message From the Vice Supreme Master Gary Mc Lain, PSD, VSM De Soto Province Worthy Masters and All Sir Knights: Once again my thanks to all the Assemblies in our Province that completed and forwarded their Fraternal Activity Report to Supreme, myself and the District Master. However, there are still 30 Assemblies that have not done so 18 in Florida, 8 in Georgia and 4 in South Carolina. Faithful Navigators and Comptrollers please check your files and make sure your Assembly is not one of the 30. Congratulations to the Districts of North Carolina and Puerto Rico for having 100% compliance in reporting. I would like to report next month that the DeSoto Province is at 100% compliance. On March 1, 2014, an Exemplification was held at Saint Sylvester Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze, Florida, where 66 men including one priest became Sir Knights. As always, the Degree Team did an excellent job. An Exemplification took place on March 15, 2014, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina where 60 new Sir Knights were welcomed including three Priests. The Exemplification was held in the Major Watters Center on the Base. We were honored to have our Supreme Knight and Supreme Master for the Degree. A great program, including tours of local museums and of the Base itself were provided by the members of the new Assembly instituted that weekend. I commend the North Carolina Exemplification Team and the Color Corps provided by the new Assembly for a job well done. All attending were impressed. The next Exemplifications are scheduled for April 5, 2014 in Indialantic, Florida and April 15, 2014 in Macon, Georgia. We are hoping for large classes for both Exemplifications. Biennial Meetings will be taking place in all the Districts throughout the Order during the months of March and April. I am sure your District Master provided you the time, date and location of your District Biennial Meeting. I hope that all Assemblies realized the importance of this Meeting and have sent or will be sending Delegates accordingly and have forwarded resolutions and suggestions for growth in our Order and especially the Fourth Degree. During this meeting three names will be forwarded for consideration for the next two year term of the District Master. A candidate must have given his permission before his name is given for consideration. Specific information regarding the suggested names will be forwarded to my attention within two weeks of the Meeting by the District Master. The final selection for District Master will be made by the Supreme Master. It is important to remember that his selection can be from the three names forwarded to him or from other sources. Appointment of the District Master will become effective on September 1, 2014, provided final decisions have been completed in the selection process. Notification of the appointment will be made by the Supreme Master. The Supreme Convention will take place August 5-7, 2014, in Orlando, Florida. The Fourth Degree will participate in the daily Masses at the Convention and provide watch at the Adoration Chapel throughout the Convention. Volunteers will be needed for these events and possibly other assignments. Please bring your Color Corps regalia with you if you wish to participate. You will not need to bring your sword. Delegates and non-delegates are encouraged to bring Color Corps regalia and join in the action. A list of volunteers will be generated at a later date. Please have your regalia in good repair! As one of the five coordinators for the Military Chaplain Fund Program, I am proud to report that we have collected a total of $696, nationwide thus far. June 30, 2014, will be the end of the third fraternal year in the five year program. I am asking for a big push in donations by May 31, 2014, so that my final report to Supreme will help in making us that much closer to the goal of $1,000, I truly believe we can end this Program by the end of the next fraternal year if all give just a little bit more to help the many Seminarians currently in the Program and those who will be entering it in the future. I would like to see the hometown of all these Seminarians be posted with their picture, name and address of the Seminary they are attending so they could become beneficiaries of the RSVP Program. These Programs go hand and hand with our support of Vocations. I am encouraging each Assembly, Council, Auxiliary and individual member to consider making a donation. Checks should be made payable to Knights of Columbus Charities and write Military Chaplains Fund on the memo line of the check. Mail to Gary L. McLain, Vice Supreme Master, 36 Currant Avenue, Middleburg, FL Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at garymc36@comcast.net or (904) Joan and I wish all a very blessed Easter. Fraternally, Gary L. McLain, PSD Vice Supreme Master DeSoto Province

6 The Palmetto State Bulletin 6 April 2014 State Deputy continued from page 2 say enough about all our council s great accomplishments. Many thanks for all the long hours and hard work. Some of these accomplishments will be recognized at the Awards Breakfast on Sunday April 26 th. Be there to see your council get their recognition. Remember, Holy Family Lead the Way in Love and Charity.Vivat Jesus Richard A. Gabriel, State Deputy Prayer for Ukraine The Knights of Columbus has been following the events unfolding in Ukraine. Pope Francis said: I assure the Ukrainian people of my closeness and pray for the victims of the violence, for their families, and for the injured. I urge all parties to cease every form of violence and to pursue harmony and peace throughout the country. In solidarity with our Holy Father, and with the Catholic Bishops and Church in Ukraine, the Knights of Columbus is asking all of our members around the world to pray the Prayer of St. Francis that there may be a renewed dialogue and respect and a peaceful resolution to the situation in Ukraine. Prayer of St. Francis Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled, as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
