Weiskircher This year, through the state charity fund, the State Knights of Columbus gave the Diocese of Charleston Catholic Committee on Scouting $1,000 to support a vocation experience for high school aged scouts on the Foothills Trail in the upstate area. The Bishop England Trek seeks to promote vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. Two years Bishop Robert Gugliemone, challenged Father Jason Adams, Region 14 and Diocese of Savannah scout chaplain, Father Matthew Gray, Diocese of Charleston scout chaplain, and Father Gio Nunez, C.R.M. a religious priest of the Adorno Fathers to continue the great experience that they had created with the first Bishop England Trek (BET). BET is a collaborative effort of the Diocese of Charleston and the Diocese of Savannah. Father Gray said The Bishop England Trek is an opportunity for scouts to experience backpacking within our own backyard. Hiking with priests and seminarians, they not only confront the hardships of the trail but also confront the hard question what does God want me to do with my life. They are supported with daily Mass, morning and night prayers, praying the rosary, the divine mercy chaplet, vocations talks, and faith sharing with youth their own age. It is a fun time and a great opportunity for scouts to grow and mature! On June 10, sixteen participants gathered in Spartanburg, S.C. for their final preparation. Mass was offered and Fr. Pablo Magione, Vocation Director of the Diocese of Savannah gavea talk on vocations and how this trek is so important to them. He compared this trek to a spiritual pilgrimage, a journey to a holy place to experience God and grow in spiritual life. Each participant received a cross, a sign that each one would take this trek as a personal pilgrimage to grow closer to God. On the trail, Scouts had the opportunity to learn so much about life. The difficult terrain, exhaustion, dehydration, and fatigue are Trek continued on page 6 SCHEDULE OF STATE WIDE EVENTS July Knighthood degree, start time 12:00PM, - Goose Creek - Council C olumbus H ope Fo undation Meeting. 9:00AM to 3:30PM. 721 Polo Rd., Irmo 28 Grand Knights Orientation Meeting - Columbia Council 6847 August th Supreme Convention - Baltimore, Maryland 18 Knighthood degree Pawley s Island starting at 12:00PM, Council Pawley s Island - Council September Knighthood Degree Florence starting at 12:00PM - Florence - Council Knighthood degree starting at 12:00PM - Greenville - Council 1668 October TBD, Kni ghthood De gre e Star ting time 12:00 PM, District 1

The Palmetto State Bulletin 2 July 2018 From the State Deputy Edward M. Griffin On June 30, 2018, I had the opportunity, along with Mike Allen, our State Deputy and our wives, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Fr. Maurice R. Daly, Council 6076, Spartanburg. I would like to thank the Past Grand Knight, Richard Himlin, for inviting us to celebrate this Council s monumental occasion. Everyone, both current and deceased members, need to be thanked for making this Council a successful one. I know that in the upcoming years Council 6076 will continue to promote the cause of Fr. McGivney, which is Charity. We have just completed another Fraternal Year. In this new Fraternal Year ( ), we will be dealing with new issues i.e. the new Faith inaction Program, On Line Membership, along with recruitment, and retention. I know that as a representative of the State Council, you will do your best to recruit new members for your Council that will uphold the principles of Fr. McGivney. This year, our recruitment goal from Supreme is 525 new members. Over the past several years, South Carolina has averaged 425 members. I know that with your recruitment efforts, the new Online Membership Program and Hispanic recruitment will enable us to attain this goal. Retention starts with recruitment. New members need to feel that they have joined a Council that will fit their needs. You and I had reasons to join the Order. All new members have a reason for joining the Knights. They may want to do charitable work, give back to their community, or they may want to be part of a fraternal group that meets their needs. Our new Faith in Action Program will be a great help in finding out what a new member wants. The most important element of a Grand Knight is maintaining a strong relationship and good communication with your members. Keep all members informed as to the activities of the Council. Also of importance, find out how your members want you to communicate with them. This could be by , direct phone or some of the new versions of communications. Add a personal touch: birthday cards, child s first communion cards, anniversary cards, etc. are some of the ways you can interact with your Council members. State Deputy continued on page 6 From the Vocations Director James P. Weiskircher, Vocations Director I would like to thank all of the councils that stepped forward this year to sponsor the 5 new seminarians that entered the program last year. It is encouraging to see the support that my brother Knights have shown to the seminarians. I have not gotten the new listing of seminarians for this year but will pass that information on when it becomes available. This year, Rhett Williams was ordained and Matthew Curley dropped out of the program. If any others drop from the program, we will have that information available for you at the Grand Knights meeting at the end of the month. But if history repeats itself, we may be Blessed with another 5-6 new incoming seminarians to support. The vocations department is getting very protective of their seminarians. If you have gone on the web site, you will no longer find any contact information for the seminarians. In fact, 2017 was the first year that the Miscellany did not do an article on the incoming seminarians. In the coming months I will try to get information on the new seminarians and their backgrounds for you. We have discovered a problem with the selection process of seminarians. One of our problems is that the councils are asking their parish priest, the vocation office which has no idea of who guys are sponsoring nor keep track of that information, other Knights, or just going on line and picking someone to sponsor. This has caused a real imbalance of support with some guys having as many as 8 councils sponsoring them while we have some with only one or two supporting them. This does not count the support of Hibernian s or the Serra Club. The diocesan seminarians get a monthly stipend from the diocese of about $ a month to cover incidentals. We need to do a better job of dividing up the support. Each council needs to come to the state vocations chair and get a name so that we can track it and balance out the support to those that need it. We could like to cap each seminarian in pre-theology or Major Theology at 4 councils supporting them and young men in college seminary at 3. For the Adorno Fathers seminarians or from the Oratory in Major Theology, we would like to see the support of two councils supporting them. The Adorno Fathers have 16 seminarians in Major Theology but have only 3 parishes in SC and one in New Jersey and need our support. Unlike the diocesan seminarians, the Adornos do not receive any money from the diocese for their support. It would be nice for them to know that someone is praying for them. This will mean that some of our councils will need to drop a seminarian and pick up another one. The priority would be: Vocations continued on page 6

The Palmetto State Bulletin 3 July 2018 Patriot s Corner Tom Monahon, PSD Master, South Carolina District DeSoto Province Brother Sir Knights, Charles Carroll of Carrollton Every man who signed the Declaration of Independence risked their property, their livelihood, their life. If the American Revolution had failed, they would have been found guilty of treason. Charles Carroll, a Catholic, risked more than most, being one of the wealthiest men in the colonies. So that there was no doubt of his commitment, he signed the Declaration Charles Carrol of Carrollton. He was the cousin of the first bishop/ archbishop in the United States Archbishop John Carroll of Baltimore. The Fourth of July is celebrated today thanks to Catholic Americans like Charles Carroll of Carrollton. Knights of the Patriotic Degree honor our Catholic legacy. Civic Award Congratulation to all 30 Assemblies that have submitted, (and I expect will earn,) the Supreme Council Civic Award. This is up from 7 Assemblies earning the Award in 2016 and 24 earning the Award last year. It is a demonstration of the strong patriotic and Church related programs conducted by the Assemblies of the SC District. I also thank District Program Director SK Keith Kingren for publicizing the Award and helping to encourage Assemblies to apply. 78 th Exemplification The next Patriotic Degree will be exemplified on October 27, 2018 in Myrtle Beach. Installation of Officers Installations of Officers are in progress. By the end of August. I will have performed the installation for 28 of the 30 Assemblies. 4 The Palmetto State Bulletin 4 July 2018 From the State Ceremonials Chairman Michael A. Allen IPSD Being initiated into our Order means you will be taught the secrets and rituals of the Knights of Columbus. Some of these secrets are minor, but others go to the core of our belief system. Keeping these secrets are vital for the health of your fraternity. You might ask why are they vital? Because these secrets are what separates our fraternity from other civic organizations. Think about it it isn t uncommon to have a group of guys that are close friends in a community or parish. However, what is uncommon is for those friends to have traditions that go back many generations. The secrets also unite the local council to the larger fraternity. All brothers get to experience first-hand the ideals and vision of the original founder, Fr. Michael J. McGivney by practicing the same ritual at each council. Just as importantly though having ceremonials makes being in a fraternity more fun. Our fraternity has certain secrets that everyone in the council knows, but no one ever divulges to outsiders. Secrets often form the core of our religious beliefs, and it just wouldn t be as much fun or have the same impact if someone let the secrets slip. Be sure to keep your ceremonials secret. If they aren t important to you, that is ok. I assure you they are important to the rest of the organization, and you owe it to them to hold your rituals and secrets sacred. Why is it that some of the members get it and others do not? To some the message goes deep and becomes a part of their very being, while for others it never scratches the surface. Ask yourself the question, when you attend your council meetings, your workshops, your district meetings, how much time do you spend discussing and sharing with each other what personal effect the ceremonials have on your lives? The ceremonials are really of very little value unless you and the other brothers come, and through your mutual sharing begin to experience the essence and depth of the message. Then you and I are activated by the real charge into your spiritual and moral fiber that is possible for all men but achieved by too few. The effectiveness of the message is in direct proportion to your knowledge and belief in our Catholic values. It is the indifference to and the ignorance of the essential message of the degrees that continues to stifle the growth of the fraternity system. Never has the time been so ripe as this period in our history, when the young people of today are crying out for the kind of message, guidance, value, and leadership that has been so long hidden in the pages of our four degrees. If we would realize that by better knowing and understanding our core beliefs, many of our day-to-day problems like membership growth, dues collections, and apathy, would simply fade away and not exist. Basically, the lessons of the ceremonials are a road map to help a person along his journey of life and assist him in his communion with his brothers. Your ceremonials are a system of values not just to make you a better Knight of Columbus, but more importantly, a better Catholic man. Did you know By Deacon Bob Cox, State spiritual Director As I have traveled throughout the state, I am finding out that there are many people, many educated folks, many Knights of Columbus, who cannot remember the Ten Commandments of God, nor the Beatitudes that Jesus taught us in the Sermon on the Mount. So here we go, The Ten Commandments: 1. I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other god before me. 2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 3. Remember to keep holy the Sabbath Day. 4. Honor your father and your mother. 5. You shall not kill. 6. You shall not commit adultery. 7. You shall not steal. 8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 9. You shall not covet your neighbor s wife. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor s goods. The Ten Commandments are a description of the basic freedom from sin that is necessary to live as a Christian. A Catholic Christian. The Beatitudes (CCC 1716): 1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 2. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. 3. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. 4. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. 5. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 6. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. 7. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 8. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 9. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on Know continued on page 6

The Palmetto State Bulletin 5 July 2018 Dear Brothers, I have a challenge for you! The Domestic Church initiative is so important in today's disintegrating world that you need to up your commitment to it. The challenge is, however, that you need to change job titles. Supreme Council has concluded that the Domestic Church Program needs to progress and reorganize. The "mission" of Building the Domestic Church is an imperative one! They have reorganized the Knights of Columbus with all of the elements of the Domestic Church blended into it and have called it their "Faith in Action" Initiative. There are 4 program categories: Faith, Family, Community, and Life. The old Domestic Church elements have been transplanted into the Faith Program or the Family Programs. They are all there, plus more. The job title, Building the Domestic Church Director or Chair Couple, is eliminated. If you want to continue the important work of Building the Domestic Church, and l hope you do, you need to volunteer as your Council's FAITH Committee Chairman, or FAMILY Committee Chairman or PROGRAM DIRECTOR. There will also be positions as COMMUNITY Committee Chairman or LIFE Committee Chairman. As you observe our world continue to disintegrate and turn it's back on TRUTH please commit yourself to fighting the good fight as an active Knight of Columbus leader. Thank you for supporting the Domestic Church mission and may God bless your family. Fraternally, Jim St. Clair From the State Protocol Chairman Worthy Grand Knights, Faithful Navigators and Members of the State Council: Councils and Assembly Meetings The Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator must conduct their meetings in accordance with the Charter, Constitution and Laws of the Knights of Columbus, supplemented by your Councils or Assembly s by-laws and according to parliamentary procedure. The standard reference on the subject of procedure is Robert s Rules of Order. The order of business for conducting a Council or Assembly meeting is outlined in The Method of Conducting Council Meetings (#10318) and The Method of Conducting Assembly Meetings (#10325), both available from knightsgear.com. Presiding officers should control all meetings so that they follow the set agenda by limiting any sidebar discussion. When a member wishes to speak, he does so by rising from his seat, addressing the chair by saying Worthy Grand Knight or Worthy Faithful Navigator and renders the salute. (Representing the tree of the Cross, the member makes a vertical motion, with his arm and vertically opened hand, from top to bottom). The presiding officer recognizes the speaker by announcing his name and rendering the salute in return. (Representing the arm of the Cross, the presiding officer makes a horizontal motion, with his arm and horizontally open hand, from right to left). The presiding officer should at all times refer to and address the offices by their proper title. He is thus setting a good example for all members to follow. All members who are not officers should be recognized by name as Brother or Sir Knight All questions or comments must be directed to the chair (the presiding officer), for example: Worthy Grand Knight or Worthy Faithful Navigator may I ask the previous speaker to explain.. The presiding officer always speaks in the third person such as The chair rules that or Your Grand Knight or Faithful Navigator reports that. Members should speak of the chair in the third person: Worthy Grand Knight or Worthy Faithful Navigator will the chair please explain the effect of the pending motion?

The Palmetto State Bulletin 6 July 2018 State Deputy continued from page 2 On July 28, 2018, the State Council will hold the Grand Knights Organizational Meeting. The information pertaining to this meeting can be found on the State s website, along with the agenda. The meeting this year will be a little different from previous years. This meeting will be an informative one. I have invited three guest speakers to our meeting. Last year, you had a lot of questions regarding the Council s requirements as to charity registration and raffle requirements. I have invited a member from the SC State Treasurer s Office to the meeting. Our second guest is from the legal profession. He will cover legal matters that are relevant to todays K of C members and their families. Our third speaker will talk on matters pertaining to VA benefits and other benefits you may not know about. We will conclude our morning session with a talk by our General Agent, Robert Boni. He will speak about our insurance program, and how it will benefit your family. After lunch, which will be paid by the State Council, presentations will be given on Ceremonials, On Line Membership, Membership, Charity Raffle, Bowling Tournament, Faith in Action, RSVP Program, and other subjects. I hope that all of you and your families had a happy and safe 4th of July, and I hope to see each of you at the meeting on July 28, God bless each and everyone of you and our Councils. Ed Vocations continued from page 2 1. Home parish of the seminarian 2. If the parish is served by an order or the Oratory, they support seminarians of the order or the Oratory. 3. Councils that only support one seminarian (this would reduce the impact on those councils having to change guys) Before making a final selection on seminarians to support this year please contact me at jim.weiskircher1@gmail.com or to finalize your selection. Thank you. in the beauty of creation. To seek these higher values, one needs to persevere, sacrifice time, strength and stepping from the comfort zone. It is the task of us priests to help them see these Christian values. The second BET ended on Saturday June 18, with a Mass at base camp at Oconee State Park. The parents came to share the joy and success of this second expedition. Neckerchiefs were given and the hope for the Scouts to join the St. George Trek 2019 was ignited. In his homily, Bishop Bob reminded the Scouts to continue to listen to God s call in their life ever present in the silence of one s heart. He reminded them that 30 miles of trekking in five days has their own difficulty. Life s lesson learned on how to persevere and not to give up. One may fall three times, sprain an ankle, gets sick but the virtue of perseverance keeps that hope alive to finish the pilgrimage. He closed by noting, It takes so much humility also for one to acknowledge difficulties on the trail and either pull off the trail or stop for rest to regain strength. An act of charity is shown when one stumbles and can t walk and others help. Charity indeed begins at home, but when we realize we Know continued from page 4 my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. The Beatitudes are at the heart of Jesus preaching. They express Jesus charity. My Brothers, please share this information with your friends and especially with your family. As the leader of your Domestic Church, it is your responsibility to teach your children and grandchildren about the Catholic faith. Instructing them on their prayer life, the Mass, and on the Ten Commandments, along with the Beatitudes that were given to us by Jesus Christ. You are the leader, lead them. Parents are the first and most important teachers of their children and grandchildren. Pray to God for guidance and He will answer and be with you in this responsibility! Viva Cristo Rey! Vivat Jesus! Trek continued from page1 part of life s tests. Every obstacle on the trail that one managed to overcome speaks a lot about life s trials in overcoming sin and temptation. Looking at the horizon to see the beauty and grandeur of God s creation, one can t help but respond with great admiration for God s creating power. This year joining the scouts and priests were two Adorno Fathers seminarians Brother Bamboo CRM, who is in his final year and Brother Chris CRM, who is completing his pastoral year in the United States. Father Gio stated that I think it was a great opportunity for the scouts to experience nature, solitude, and silence away from the noises of the world so that they could hear the call to which God is calling them. Scouts need to be familiar with silence, reflection and seeing God
