Diocesan Guidelines require two years of preparation for first Holy Communion. Children 6 years of age or older who have not been baptized must receive two years of instruction before receiving the sacrament of Baptism. In all cases, parents/guardians must make an appointment to speak with Sr. Patricia Anglin at the Office of Faith Formation RCIA - If you are an adult, 18 years or older and interested in completing your Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion) now is the time to register. 5 THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 1/29/2017 PASTOR S DESK Well something's lost, but something's gained in living every day - Joni Mitchell Cont. For more than a century the Balzano family has owned and managed Sunny s Bar in Red Hook. The cozy watering hole was immortalized by Tim Sultan in his memoir, Sonny s Nights: Lost and Found at a Bar at the Edge of the World. The very mention of Penn Station to any rail fan immediately awakens painful memories of the destruction of the original edifice now universally acknowledged to have been a monumental act of vandalism akin to what ISIS is doing in Palmyra and other cities in Syria and Iraq. Tone Balzano Johansen, the current owner, worked like a demon to mobilize support for restoring the bar after it suffered major damage in Super Storm Sandy. And she saved the beloved bar. As unattractive as the station is now, it has not been without some charm provided by the huge DEPAR- TURES board dominating the waiting area. That board has provided a mesmerizing focal point as travelers stare transfixed at the changing status of expected trains. The flipping postings give off a sound as distinctively rail travel as the thumping of a steam locomotive at rest. And the area beneath the board has been the site of countless meetings and farewells. Now that famed icon of New York railroadiana has passed into history like the stone eagles that once decorated the façade of the station in its glory days. In its place are digital displays as difficult to read as they are unromantic. Speaking of romantic, however, I am reminded that something is gained just as something is lost in living every day. One of the more charming, if not exactly romantic bits of Brooklyn history has been spared. Now, however, she faces a new challenge from relatives of her late husband, Sunny Balzano, who want to have the building sold at auction and razed. I can t let this be torn down for a view of the Statue of Liberty, Ms. Johansen said. It s old Brooklyn wanting to hand it over to new Brooklyn. Ironically, I am fighting to keep the story of old Brooklyn alive. Way to go, Ms. Johansen! If I have to spend some time in purgatory, I hope that it will be furnished like Sunny s Bar. And I hope that there will be a huge DEPARTURES board that I can hear flipping as I wait for my name to appear. Maybe, I will have just enough time to down a second pint before boarding the train that s bound for gloryl COLLECTIONS: The collection for the week of January 22nd amounted to $10,821. SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, 2017 VALENTINE S DAY PARTY Hosted by Patriots Cooperstown 2017 ST GREGORY S SCHOOL - Catholic Schools Week January 29th - February 3rd. DOMINICAN SISTERS OF AMITYVILLE will be in the Gathering Space the weekend of February 11th & 12th, after all the Masses, to sell chances for raffles for their fundraising event Irish Night in March.
