5 THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT 4/2/2017 PASTOR S DESK Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it? - Luke 15 The other day I reached into my pocket looking for a quarter to drop into the Muni meter outside the library. I felt a coin, and was just about to drop it into the slot when, fortunately, I noticed that what I was holding was a one dollar coin rather than a quarter. (Msgr. McGuirl foisted on me a bunch of those darn dollars after getting them from a LIRR ticket vending machine during a recent jaunt into Manhattan.) Cont. Let s wish Berlin detectives good luck in their pursuit of this purloined piece of change. Meanwhile, back to the woman in the parable who represents God in his search for lost or straying sinners. Next week, on Monday now known as Reconciliation Monday priests will be all over our diocese, sitting in confessionals and reconciliation rooms, awaiting sinners who want to unload their sins the way Msgr. McGuirl unloaded his dollar coins on me. The lady in Jesus parable may be searching her house diligently, but not nearly as desperately as police in Berlin are searching for a gold coin that was lifted from the Bode Museum one night last week. The 220-pound coin, produced at the Royal Canadian Mint and named The Big Maple Leaf has a face value of One Million Canadian Dollars; but, being % pure gold, it is estimated to be worth close to $4.2 million American dollars. Why did the Royal Canadian Mint make the world s purest and largest gold bullion coin? A statement on the mint s website said, because we can. And why did thieves target the Bode Museum? Because, to quote the notorious bank robber, John Dillinger, that s where the money was. Given its size and weight, a Berlin motorist would hardly be likely to drop it into a German version of our Muni Meters. And it would quickly burn a hole in any thief s pocket. Your sins may be as weighty as The Big Maple Leaf or you may just have a pocketful of the small change of venial sins. But the angels in heaven will still rejoice over seeing the image of Jesus restored in one soul as much as the hapless museum authorities in Berlin hope to rejoice over seeing the image of Queen Elizabeth II on The Big Maple Leaf in its display case. I know that it is really unlikely, but hope springs eternal. So, I will alert our collection counters to be on the lookout in case The Big Maple Leaf turns up in one of our Sunday collection baskets. And I will take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your generosity in next Sunday s Easter Collection. Welcome Home, Father Cunningham Since his retirement as pastor five years ago, Father Cunningham has been filling in at various parishes that have had shortages of priest personnel. Now Bishop DiMarzio has asked him to come back to St. Gregory s for a few months before a permanent parochial vicar can be assigned to us. Father Johnson and I are delighted that Father Cunningham is returning to us, at least for a time. We will be so happy to have another priest to assist us with the demanding schedule of parish life. And to have a priest who is so familiar to everyone is a special blessing. We expect that he will take up residence a few days before Palm Sunday. So please be prepared to wish him a hearty Welcome Home!
