Diocesan Guidelines require two years of preparation for first Holy Communion. Children 6 years of age or older who have not been baptized must receive two years of instruction before receiving the sacrament of Baptism. In all cases, parents/guardians must make an appointment to speak with Sr. Patricia Anglin at the Office of Faith Formation RCIA - If you are an adult, 18 years or older and interested in completing your Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion) now is the time to register. 5 THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PASTOR S DESK Cont. 1/22/2017 "I will never forget it. I still think about it every week." - Harry Lichtenbaum For old-time residents of the Hartford area and summer people who have vacationed for generations at nearby resorts such as Lake Pocotopaug, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus Fire of July 6, 1944 is a powerful folk memory. Harry Lichtenbaum is one of a diminishing number of survivors of that horrific event that claimed 167 lives. But each July 6 th brings reminders of Little Miss 1565, the beautiful blond young girl whose body was never identified or claimed by family members. And the iconic photo of clown Emmett Kelly carrying a bucket of water in a vain attempt to help extinguish the flames finds its way into the papers. So, the announcement last week that Ringling Bros. is folding up its tents, and closing down for good after 146 years has a special poignancy for denizens of the Connecticut River Valley. For us on Long Island, especially those of us who are rail fans, the demise of the circus is also a loss. Each spring the circus train brought the show out to the Nassau Coliseum, passing right by the Bellerose Station on the way. In April, I listen more attentively to the scanner in my office, waiting for the operator at Queens Tower in Queens Village to call out, Queens Tower calling the Circus Train. Perhaps when The Greatest Show on Earth gives the very last of its performances at Nassau Coliseum next April, I might persuade the owners to sell me one of its train cars cheap, so that I can plant it in the parking area across from the Gathering Space on the former right-of-way of the Creedmoor spur of the L.I.R.R. After all, life in this vibrant parish does feel just a bit like a three-ring circus at times, and I am privileged to be the Ringmaster. MEETINGS IN THE RECTORY Effective immediately the older section of the rectory basement will not be available for meetings while renovations are in progress. There will be no more access to the basement by way of the interior metal staircase. The newer Office remains open for use, but it can be entered only by way of the exterior door at the foot of the outside stairs. A special key can be obtained at the upstairs office desk to open the Office door. We ask that groups be especially careful about being sure that the door is shut behind you and LOCKED securely. COLLECTIONS: The collection for the week of January 15th amounted to $9,057. Thank you for your generosity.

6 HOSPITALITY SUNDAY will be hosted by the Rosary Society Sunday today in the Gathering Space. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS - There will be a short meeting on Saturday, January 28th, in the Office after the 9:00AM Mass for discussions and to celebrate the lunar New Year. As we begin Catholic Schools Week, please join us at the 9:15AM Mass on Sunday, January 29th, in the Church. Following the Mass there will be an Open House at the School, 10:30AM-12:30PM. BOOK CLUB - The selection for the next meeting to take place thia Monday, January 23rd, at 7:00PM in the Office is The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy. RIGHT TO LIFE MARCH in Washington D.C., will take place this year on Friday, January 27th. The bus will leave from Our Lady of Victory Church, Floral Park, where Mass will be celebrated at 5:30AM. 7 THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME VOCATIONS This month pictures for the Welcome Wall will be take on Saturday, January 28th, following the 5:00PM Mass. VOCATION RETREAT with Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will take place March 24th-26th, at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. This retreat is a special invitation to discerners to spend the weekend with Bishop DiMarzio with talks and presentations on the call to vocation to the priesthood. Arrive for registration at 5:30PM. There is no fee! PROJECT MYRIAM is an event created for women of all ages to come together to speak about their discernment. Prayer questions and then dinner will conclude the evening.
