Sacrament of Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is offered each Saturday at 1:00PM. and at other times by appointment with one of our priests. Marriage: A couple planning marriage must make an appointment with one of our priests or deacons at least 6 months in advance of the marriage.

GREGORY THE GREAT CATHOLIC ACADEMY JHS Social Studies 8th Grade, American History: Civil War to Present, 7th Grade American History: Colonization to the Civil War, and 6th Grade: World History, are all engaged in fascinating historical topics. 8th Grade is currently looking at Industry and Urban Growth in the early 20th century, and delivering presentations on American Labor Unions. 7th Grade is immersed in the study of the Colombian Exchange. They are practicing cartographic skills, mapping the intended and unintended exchanges that occurred between the Old World and New during the 15th and 16th centuries. Finally, 6th grade is looking at early civilizations in Mesopotamia, and are going to be creating visual representations of Sumerian and Babylonian achievements in a fact cube. Ariana Josephine Edele FAITH FORMATION Religion classes for children in Grades 1 through 8 attending public school are held on Sunday mornings following the 9:15AM Family Mass at the Church. Diocesan guidelines require two years of preparation for First Holy Communion. Children 6 years of age or older who have not been baptized must receive two years of instruction before receiving the sacrament of Baptism. In all cases, parents/guardians must make an appointment to speak with Sr. Patricia Anglin at the Office of Faith Formation RCIA - Have you received all your Sacraments of Initiation? 5 12/16/18 PASTOR S DESK It is almost a definition of a gentleman to say he is one who never inflicts pain. John Henry Cardinal Newman One of the classics of educational literature is John Henry Newman s Idea of a University, a series of lectures he delivered to mark the founding of the ill-fated Catholic University of Ireland. Much of Newman s philosophy of education has, alas, been tossed aside in the halls of contemporary academia. But one man who certainly took Newman s views to heart, P.M. Forni, passed away some days ago. THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT Cont. In our present society, where incivility is eating away at the body politic like a cancer, we can find an antidote in the writings of classics such as The Divine Comedy and in essays by Newman and Forni. But we can also take a cue from Advent. The Scriptural conversations we listen in on are models of civility. Think of Mary and the Angel Gabriel or the Baptist s family trying to make sense of Zachariah s inability to speak and his odd choice of a name for his son. Then, of course, we need only listen to Jesus, even when he is under attack, to learn what to do when people are rude. Now, I must pick up a volume of Newman and revel once again in his incomparable English prose and preeminent good sense. CATHOLIC CHARITIES COLLECTION Bishop DiMarzio invites all to join him in this year s Annual Catholic Charities Collection, which will take place at all Christmas Masses. Please return the special Catholic Charities envelope from your envelope packet with your gift. If you did not receive a printed envelope, we ask you to use a Catholic Charities envelope that is available in the Church or a blank envelope marked for Catholic Charities. Bishop DiMarzio urges all to join in sharing God s love with families and children in need by giving generously to this year s collection. In 1997, Dr. Forni co-founded the Johns Hopkins Civility Project, ] whose aim was to assess the significance of civility, manners and politeness in contemporary society. He became the author of two best-selling books on the subject of civility, and gained quite a following. Courtesy, politeness, manners and civility are all a form of awareness, Dr. Forni wrote. Being civil means constantly being aware of others and weaving restraint, respect and consideration into the very fabric of this awareness. He decided to focus on civility in the 1990s while teaching a class on The Divine Comedy. That poetic masterpiece brought Dr. Forni to the realization that he wanted his students to be kind human beings more than he wanted them to know about Dante. So, as an educator, he might have been Newman s disciple much the same as Dante claimed to be a disciple of Virgil ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL A special word of thanks to all of you who made a gift to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal in the special collection last weekend. Your gifts moved us closer to realizing our parish goal. The collection amounted to $2,000. COLLECTION The collection for the week of December 9th amounted to $8,163 for the parish. The collection for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception amount to $1,829. Thank you very much for your continued generosity.

The donations will be delivered to St. Vincent de Paul Society, Providence House, Helping Hands of Immaculate Conception Parish (Bronx) and our homebound parishioners. Thank you for your generosity. There will be a wide variety of cakes, cookies, brownies, chocolate covered pretzels and more. Please stop by! SILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT a Festival of Lessons & Carols featuring our Adult Choir, Chamber Singers and Folk Group will take place this afternoon, at 3:00PM, in the Church. Suitable for all ages. Admission is free. BOOK CLUB - The selection for the next meeting, which will take place on Monday, December 17th, at 7:00PM in the Rectory Basement, is The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2018 EPIPHANY PRAYER EVENT CELEBRATION - Don t let the last day of Christmas go unmarked. Come to the celebration on Saturday, January 5th, 7:30PM in St. Gregory the Great s Gathering space and join in the JOY of the day. PRAYER SHAWL & QUILTING MINISTRY - We had a successful year sending warmth and comfort to many who were in need of God s love. In October, 15 lap robes were donated to the Doe Club of New Hyde Park for the Wounded Warriors. This month a dozen shawls were donated to the Glen Oaks Nursing Home and 16 quilts for babies were donated to the Bridge to Life. All of these were blessed by Fr. Szymon. Thank you all for your helping hands. Our cupboard is bare, so we are taking a holiday break. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 9th, at 1:00PM in the Green Room, which is accessible by elevator and stairs. Light refreshments will be served. GROUP DEFENSIVE DRIV- ING COURSE 2019, that is sponsored by the Holy Name Society, will take place as a split class on Tuesday and Thursday, January 22nd & 24th, 7:00-10:00PM and Saturday, January 26th, 9:00AM- 3:00PM. Forms with additional information will be available in the December Gregorian and in the Parish Office. Cost is $45. Proceeds to benefit the 2019 Cooperstown Patriots. RENAISSANCE GROUP - Join the Renaissance Group at Nancy s Restaurant in Floral Park on Sunday, January 27th, beginning at 1:30PM. We will have a buffet meal including salad, entrees, an ice cream sundae bar and soda, coffee or tea for $35 per person. A cash bar will be available. All adults are invited to join us.
