5 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT 12/18/16 PASTOR S DESK This is wow. - GovernorAndrew Cuomo, inspecting the 2 nd Avenue Subway It may seem like something between idiocy and blasphemy to compare Andrew Cuomo to John the Baptist, but the Governor is acting very much like the Precursor these days. As we approach the conclusion of Advent on this Sunday of the Fourth Candle and the Gospel of the Annunciation to Joseph, New York City approaches - at long last - an Advent of its own. Admittedly, the period from the first proposal of a subway to replace the Second Ave. El to the line s opening is nowhere as long as the long Advent between the call of Abraham and Jesus birth, but to New Yorkers crammed into the Lexington Ave. subway it has seemed like an eternity. Cont. He is so excited that you can almost hear him crying out, Make ready the way of the Q train. Every signal will turn green, every switch will be aligned. And all riders will see it together. And if the bus driver in last week s column opined about the village of Kidlington that There is no wow-wow here, Governor Cuomo is emphatic that wow can surely be found under the streets of the Big Apple. But the biggest WOW of all is to be found in our church and in every church on Christmas night as we join the angelic chorus in singing out, Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace even as the Prince of Peace becomes present on our altar. In order to get the full WOW out of Christmas, we need to return to the message of the actual Precursor, Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand. To that end, our parish will join all parishes in the Metropolitan Area in observing Reconciliation Monday, tomorrow, December 19 th. We will have a priest hearing confessions from 4:00PM until 8:00PM. Come to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It will put you on the express track to a fulfilling celebration of Christmas. You might even leave the church thinking, Wow. That confession was really wow. With the first segment of the 2nd Ave. subway slated to go into operation by January 1st, Governor Cuomo has visited the project and walked the tunnel three times in recent weeks, anticipating the arrival of the first train as confidently as John waited for Jesus to appear at the Jordan. Thank you so much for your generous response to our Annual Maintenance Collection. The collection this year amounted to $29,105. If you walk past our parish convent, you will see your donations already at work in the renewed sidewalk.
6 RECONCILIATION MONDAY - Confessions will be heard in Church this Monday, 4:00-8:00PM. Come celebrate the Sacrament as we prepare this Advent for the coming of the Lord.
