3 LECTIONARY TEXTS FOR TODAY S CATHEDRAL EUCHARIST Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you are not a communicant and would like to receive a blessing, please inform the clergy by bringing this leaflet to the Altar Rail. COLLECT FOR THE DAY Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son was revealed to destroy the works of the devil and to make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life: grant that we, having this hope, may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that when he shall appear in power and great glory we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. NEW TESTAMENT READING - Hebrews 10: Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since then has been waiting until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds, he also adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more. Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 16 1 Preserve me, O God : for in thee have I put my trust. 2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord : Thou art my God, my goods are nothing unto thee. 3 All my delight is upon the saints, that are in the earth : and upon such as excel in virtue. 4 But they that run after another god : shall have great trouble.
4 5 Their drink-offerings of blood will I not offer : neither make mention of their names within my lips. 6 The Lord himself is the portion of mine inheritance, and of my cup : thou shalt maintain my lot. 7 The lot is fallen unto me in a fair ground : yea, I have a goodly heritage. 8 I will thank the Lord for giving me warning : my reins also chasten me in the night-season. 9 I have set God always before me : for he is on my right hand, therefore I shall not fall. 10 Wherefore my heart was glad, and my glory rejoiced : my flesh also shall rest in hope. 11 For why? thou shalt not leave my soul in hell : neither shalt thou suffer thy Holy One to see corruption. 12 Thou shalt shew me the path of life; in thy presence is the fulness of joy : and at thy right hand there is pleasure for evermore. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. GOSPEL READING Mark 13: 1-8 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings! Then Jesus asked him, Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down. When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished? Then Jesus began to say to them, Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, I am he! and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs. This is the Gospel of the Lord.
5 MOTET: I will wash my hands in innocency I will wash my hands in innocency, O Lord : and so will I go to thine altar. For I have loved the habitation of thine house : and the place where thine honour dwelleth. Amen. POST COMMUNION PRAYER Text: Psalm 26: 6, 8 Music: William Smith ( ) Gracious Lord, in this holy sacrament you give substance to our hope: bring us at the last to that fullness of life for which we long; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. MATTINS ANTHEM TEXT: How lovely are thy dwellings fair How lovely are Thy dwellings fair, O Lord of Hosts, My soul ever longeth and fainteth sore for the blessed courts of the Lord; My heart and flesh do cry unto God, cry to the living God. Blest are they that in Thy house are dwelling, They ever praise Thee, O Lord, for ever more. How lovely are Thy dwellings fair. Text: from A German Requiem Op 45 Music: Johannes Brahms ( ) EVENSONG ANTHEM TEXT: The heavens are telling The Heavens are telling the glory of God, The wonder of his work displays the firmament. Today that is coming speaks it the day, The night that is gone to following night. The Heavens are telling the glory of God, The wonder of his work displays the firmament. In all the lands resounds the word, Never unperceived, ever understood. The Heavens are telling the glory of God, The wonder of his work displays the firmament. Text: from The Creation Music: Joseph Haydn ( )

7 NOTICEBOARD Stewardship appeal - Thank you: Many thanks for the responses to our recent stewardship campaign. 63 people have joined the Parish Giving Scheme, our new regular giving arrangement, and 15 of those are new regular givers. 46 people have agreed under the new scheme that their giving may be increased by inflation each year. On top of this, we are aware of other givers who are continuing with their existing method and have increased their giving. The total additional giving for a full year will be 17,000 before Gift Aid. This is a significant increase in our stewardship giving, which is greatly appreciated. Further responses will be welcomed - it is not too late, so do please respond to Charles Martin if you have not yet done so. Proclaiming Liberty: Freedom of Speech Thursday 19 November at 7.45pm: Our final lecture in this series is given by The Rt Hon Lord Toulson. Full details are available at Winter Market & Fair: Friday 20 & Saturday 21 November: Join us in our heated Marquee, with over 50 exhibitors selling bespoke Christmas gifts and decorations, chocolates, champagne, jewellery and accessories plus much much more! All donations will be very much appreciated. Advent Course: How do Christians know and worship God? This Advent, there is an opportunity to reflect on one of the treasures of the Christian faith The Lord's Prayer. Using material from the Pilgrim Course ( we will explore prayer and reveal more about what God is like. We will meet at 4 Cathedral Close on Thursdays at 7.30pm: 26 November, 3, 10 and 17 December with a final session on Saturday 16 January (11am -2pm, with lunch). If there is sufficient interest, we hope to run a second group on Saturdays during Advent. Please contact Canon Gittoes. Prayer for Healing? A Workshop Saturday 28 November Chapter House: Prayer for healing has been an important aspect of the church s pastoral care from earliest times. It has also been a regular part of the life of the cathedral for many years. However the monthly Saturday morning healing service, although much appreciated by those who come, is neither known about nor convenient for many people. In order to make this ministry more accessible it is proposed that, once month there will be an opportunity to receive prayer, the laying on of hands and anointing following receiving Communion at the Sunday Eucharist. There will be an opportunity to learn more about this on 28 November when we shall consider the history of the healing ministry in the church, the meaning of the laying on of hands and anointing, what we might expect from prayer for healing and other questions which participants may want to raise. The workshop will be led by Canon Mavis Wilson with others. In preparation you may find it helpful to look at It will help our planning if
