LECTIONARY TEXTS FOR TODAY S CATHEDRAL EUCHARIST Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you are not a communicant and would like to receive a blessing, please inform the clergy by bringing this leaflet to the Altar Rail. COLLECT FOR THE DAY Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity: keep us steadfast in this faith, that we may evermore be defended from all adversities; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. NEW TESTAMENT READING - Romans 5: 1-5 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 8 1 O Lord our Governor, how excellent is thy Name in all the world : thou that hast set thy glory above the heavens! 2 Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies : that thou mightest still the enemy, and the avenger. 3 For I will consider thy heavens, even the works of thy fingers : the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained. 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him : and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5 Thou madest him lower than the angels : to crown him with glory and worship.

6 Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands : and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet; 7 All sheep and oxen : yea, and the beasts of the field; 8 The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea : and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord our Governor : how excellent is thy Name in all the world! Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Choir All Choir All Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, one God, who was, and who is, and who is to come, the Almighty. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. GOSPEL READING - John 16: Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Jesus said, I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. This is the Gospel of the Lord.

MOTET: Ave verum corpus Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine, cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit sanguine; esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. O Jesu dulcis, O pie, O Jesu fili Mariae. All hail, true body of the blessed Virgin born, which in anguish to redeem us didst suffer upon the cross; from whose side, when pierced by spear there came forth both water and blood: be to us at our last hour the source of consolation. O Jesus loving, O holy, O Jesu Son of Mary. Text: 14 th Century, attr Pope Innocent VI Music: Colin Mawby (b 1936) POST COMMUNION PRAYER Almighty and eternal God, you have revealed yourself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and live and reign in the perfect unity of love: hold us firm in this faith, that we may know you in all your ways and evermore rejoice in your eternal glory, who are three Persons yet one God, now and for ever. Amen. EVENSONG ANTHEM TEXT: Tibi laus Tibi laus, tibi Gloria, tibi gratiarum actione in saecula sempiterna, O beata Trinitas. Praise to you, glory to you, thanksgiving to you for ever and ever, O blessed Trinity. The Father is charity, the Son grace, the Holy Spirit overflowing goodness: O blessed Trinity. The Father is full of truth, the Son truth, the Holy Spirit truth: O blessed Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one substance, O blessed Trinity. And blessed is the holy name of your glory, praiseworthy and exalted above all else for ever. Text: Trinity Sunday, centonization of Responsory 5, Antiphons 7 9. Music: Peter Philips ( )

NOTICEBOARD The People s Cathedral Project: Acoustic plaster removal has commenced and Keltbray contractors can be seen wearing white, blue and red suits in the Cathedral to allow them to enter the sealed off tented areas. Material is removed from the Cathedral after it has closed each weekday evening up until 10pm. During the works air monitoring will continue as part of our ongoing programme which has been in place for 3 years. Scaffolding to the south and north aisles is being erected in preparation for the high level suspended platform. A Q&A document containing information about the building works in the Cathedral can be found in the front page news item on our website or can be downloaded at Community Committee: Following the annual congregational meeting on 15 May, the Community Committee is taking a break and there are no current elected members. Community events and activities such as the Food Bank collection and second Sunday coffee will continue much as normal. As a whole community, we are entering a period of observation and reflection on community input, connection and contribution to the work of Chapter. As the elected community members on Chapter, Linda Sharpin and Ian Bowler are consulting widely with the community. It is important that we take time now to consider prayerfully the right way forward. Linda can be contacted on or linda@sharpin.com, and Ian on or ianjbowler@btinternet.com. Offertory Procession: We are planning to compile a list of members of the congregation who would be willing to take part in the Offertory Procession, and present the bread and wine at the Cathedral Eucharist from time to time. If you would be willing to be on the list, please contact Emma Law, the Dean s PA, at deanspa@guildford-cathedral.org or Once we have a list of names we will circulate an availability sheet and then produce quarterly rotas. This is a simple but important part of our Cathedral liturgy, symbolising God s generosity to us and our obligation to offer his gifts back to him for use in his service (in this context to become the bread of life and cup of salvation of the Eucharist). For further information, please speak to one of the clergy. Guildford Cathedral Fairtrade: We are delighted to report that the Cathedral Fair Trade stall has again met its purchase target from Traidcraft and has retained Top Fairtrader status, placing the stall in the top 200 in the country. This gives Guildford Cathedral better discounts on purchases and hence increased profits to be shared between the Cathedral and outward giving. All Fair Trade tea, coffee and other products supplied to the Cathedral are at cost price. Our stall is open every Sunday at the back of the nave after the Cathedral Eucharist: thank you all for your support.

Monthly Community Coffee Morning Thursday 26 May from 9.30am: All members of the Cathedral community (volunteers, congregation and friends) are invited to join us in the Refectory for our regular last Thursday of the month coffee morning. At approximately 11am each month, the People s Cathedral Site Manager, Steve Clements, will give an update on building works and relay health and safety information. Also this month, Penny Peters will give a presentation about her recent trip to northern Uganda with Seeds for Development and will report on how every penny of last year s Guildford Cathedral Fairtrade donation has been spent. Buns on Saturday 28 May from am in the NGCF: An informal opportunity to discuss issues of life, faith and the things we might just call stuff, but which is important or relevant to us. All views or opinions heard and respected, but no answers guaranteed. Coffee, tea and buns provided. To let us know you will be coming or for more information, please speak to a member of the planning team John and Caroline Austin, Sheila Mackelworth, Jean Deeks or the Dean. All welcome. For your diaries the following meeting will be 9 July. Theological Book Group: The next meeting of the book group is on Sunday 29 May at 11.30, in the North Garth Conference Facility (NGCF). The book to be discussed is Praying for England. Priestly Presence in Contemporary Culture' (Continuum publishers, 2008), edited by Sarah Coakley and Sam Wells. The session will focus on the Introduction and chapter 1. The book has a number of contributors looking at how the Church of England can engage with contemporary society, in all its challenge and diversity, through the lens of priestly ministry. For further information please contact Canon Andrew Bishop. Summer Market, Family Fun Day and Royal Tea Saturday 11 June, 11am- 3pm: Bring your family & friends and help us welcome visitors to the Cathedral. Free entry to a wide range of market stalls, plus the Emergency Poet, the Repair Café and Family Fun. There will be a single sitting Royal Tea at 2pm which must be pre-booked via the website. We do need your help can you volunteer for 2 hours to help run Family Fun stalls on behalf of The Friends of Guildford Cathedral (contact friends@guildford-cathedral.org ) or help with children s craft activities on behalf of the HLF team (contact louise@guildford-cathedral.org ). Offers of loan of gazebo also welcome. Coins Scheme: Travellers to Australia, Canada and Switzerland have brought our total to 12,487. We really need help from anyone bound for Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, India and Thailand. Please ask us to help with currency. Coins and notes of any country, any age, are always welcome!
