3 LECTIONARY TEXTS FOR TODAY S CATHEDRAL EUCHARIST Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you are not a communicant and would like to receive a blessing, please inform the clergy by bringing this leaflet to the Altar Rail. COLLECT FOR THE DAY O Almighty God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. NEW TESTAMENT READING Acts 8: Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, Get up and go towards the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go over to this chariot and join it. So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, Do you understand what you are reading? He replied, How can I, unless someone guides me? And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth. The eunuch asked Philip, About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else? Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized? He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

4 GOSPEL READING John 15: 1-8 The Holy Gospel is written in the 15 th chapter of the Gospel according to John, beginning at the 1 st verse. Jesus said I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. This is the Gospel of the Lord. MOTET: Ave verum corpus Ave verum corpus, natum De Maria Virgine, Vere passum, immolatum In cruce pro homine, Cujus latus perforatum Unda fluxit sanguine; Esto nobis praegustatum, In mortis examine. Jesu, Word of God Incarnate, Of the Virgin Mary born, On the Cross Thy sacred Body, For us men with nails was torn. Cleanse us, by the blood and water, Streaming from Thy piercèd side; Feed us with Thy Body broken, Now, and in death s agony. Music: Jean Langlais ( )

5 MATTINS ANTHEM TEXT: My beloved spake My beloved spake and said unto me, rise, rise my love, my fair one and come away. For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear upon the earth, and the time of the singing of birds is come. Alleluja. And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land. The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vine with the tender grape gives a good smell. Rise, rise my love, my fair one and come away. My beloved is mine and I am his. Alleluja. Text: Song of Solomon Music: Henry Purcell ( ) EVENSONG ANTHEM TEXT: My soul, there is a country My soul, there is a country far beyond the stars, where stands a wingèd sentry all skilful in the wars. There, above noise and danger, sweet peace sits crowned with smiles, and One born in a manger commands the beauteous files. He is thy gracious Friend, and - O my soul, awake! - did in pure love descend, to die here for thy sake. If thou canst get but thither, thee grows the flower of peace, the rose that cannot wither thy fortress and thy ease. Leave then thy foolish ranges, for none can thee secure but one who never changes, thy God, thy life, thy cure. Music: Charles Hubert Hastings Parry ( )
