3 LECTIONARY TEXTS FOR TODAY S CATHEDRAL EUCHARIST Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you are not a communicant and would like to receive a blessing, please inform the clergy by bringing this leaflet to the Altar Rail. COLLECT FOR THE DAY Eternal Father, whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven that he might rule over all things as Lord and King: keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit and in the bond of peace, and bring the whole created order to worship at his feet; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING - Daniel 7: 9-10, As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousand served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgement, and the books were opened. As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 93 1 The Lord is King, and hath put on glorious apparel : the Lord hath put on his apparel, and girded himself with strength. 2 He hath made the round world so sure : that it cannot be moved. 3 Ever since the world began hath thy seat been prepared : thou art from everlasting. 4 The floods are risen, O Lord, the floods have lift up their voice : the floods lift up their waves. 5 The waves of the sea are mighty, and rage horribly : but yet the Lord, who dwelleth on high, is mightier. 6 Thy testimonies, O Lord, are very sure : holiness becometh thine house for ever.

4 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. FESTAL ALLELUIA Before the gospel, the Alleluia is played over once on the organ, then sung once by the choir, then repeated by choir and congregation. The choir then sings a gospel verse, before the choir and congregation repeat the Alleluia once. Gospel verse (choir only): Blessings on him who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessings on the coming kingdom of our father David. After the gospel, the first phrase of the Alleluia is played over on the organ, and is then sung once by choir and congregation. GOSPEL READING John 18: 33b-37 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered, Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me? Pilate replied, I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. Pilate asked him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. This is the Gospel of the Lord.

5 MOTET: Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking; we beseech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. POST COMMUNION PRAYER Text: Collect for Holy Communion (BCP) Music: Thomas Tomkins ( ) Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may by you be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. MATTINS ANTHEM TEXT: Hallelujah (Messiah) Hallelujah: for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever. King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. Hallelujah! Text: from The Book of Revelation Music: George Frideric Handel ( ) EVENSONG ANTHEM TEXT: Alleluia! I heard a voice Alleluia. I heard a voice as of strong thund rings saying, Alleluia. Salvation and glory and honour and power be unto the Lord our God and to the Lamb for evermore. Alleluia. Text: The Book of Revelation 5 Music: Thomas Weelkes ( )

7 NOTICEBOARD Guildford Cathedral Temporary Two Day Closure: In preparation for the building element of the People s Cathedral Project to commence, it is necessary for Guildford Cathedral to close to all visitors on Wednesday 25 November and Thursday 26 November. The Lady Chapel will be open for quiet prayer and Services (access via the North Door at the far end of the car park). Services will be held at the normal times except for Choral Evensong on Thursday 26 November which will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Guildford High Street at 5:30pm. Stewardship appeal - Thank you: Many thanks for the responses to our recent stewardship campaign. 63 people have joined the Parish Giving Scheme, our new regular giving arrangement, and 15 of those are new regular givers. 46 people have agreed under the new scheme that their giving may be increased by inflation each year. On top of this, we are aware of other givers who are continuing with their existing method and have increased their giving. The total additional giving for a full year will be 17,000 before Gift Aid. This is a significant increase in our stewardship giving, which is greatly appreciated. Further responses will be welcomed - it is not too late, so do please respond to Charles Martin if you have not yet done so. Advent Course: How do Christians know and worship God? This Advent, there is an opportunity to reflect on one of the treasures of the Christian faith The Lord's Prayer. Using material from the Pilgrim Course ( we will explore prayer and reveal more about what God is like. We will meet at 4 Cathedral Close on Thursdays at 7.30pm: 26 November, 3, 10 and 17 December with a final session on Saturday 16 January (11am -2pm, with lunch). If there is sufficient interest, we hope to run a second group on Saturdays during Advent. Please contact Canon Gittoes. Prayer for Healing? A Workshop Saturday 28 November Chapter House: Prayer for healing has been an important aspect of the church s pastoral care from earliest times. It has also been a regular part of the life of the cathedral for many years. However the monthly Saturday morning healing service, although much appreciated by those who come, is neither known about nor convenient for many people. In order to make this ministry more accessible it is proposed that, once month there will be an opportunity to receive prayer, the laying on of hands and anointing following receiving Communion at the Sunday Eucharist. There will be an opportunity to learn more about this on 28 November when we shall consider the history of the healing ministry in the church, the meaning of the laying on of hands and anointing, what we might expect from prayer for healing and other questions which participants may want to raise. The workshop will be led by Canon Mavis Wilson with others. In preparation you may find it helpful to look at It will help our planning if you could let the Dean s PA, Emma, know that you are planning to attend, deanspa@guildford-cathedral.org
