St Columba s Scottish Episcopal Church Largs 140th Anniversary edition June

The Scottish Episcopal Church is a self-governing province of the world-wide Anglican Communion. This is a family of over 70 million Christians in more than 160 countries. Our nearest relations are the Church of England, the Church in Wales and the Church of Ireland. Through the Porvoo agreement we are also in full communion with many other branches of the Church. St Columba s in Largs, is one of over 60 Episcopal congregations that work and worship within the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. We are part of Ayrshire Region and our neighbours include congregations in Ardrossan, Dalry, Irvine, Troon, Kilmarnock, Prestwick, Ayr and Maybole. The area covered by St Columba s includes Largs, Skelmorlie, Fairlie and West Kilbride and ecumenically we play a very active part in Largs Churches Together. Sunday: 8.00am Said Eucharist SERVICES AT ST COLUMBA S 11.00am Sung Eucharist (Choral Matins on second Sunday of the month) 6.30pm Evening Prayer (check noticeboard for details) Refreshments are served in the hall following the 11.00am service Wednesday: 10.00am Said Eucharist (Scottish Liturgy 1970) Festivals and Saints Days as announced The Daily Offices of Morning Prayer (8.00am) and Evening Prayer (5.00pm) are offered publicly in church on most weekdays. 3 Dear Friends, I remember as a child spending long periods of time straining at the children s part of the newspaper to spot the differences in what appeared to be two identical pictures. There would certainly be no prizes if you were to compare both pictures of St Columba s as illustrated on the front cover of this edition of the church magazine There is, of course, a beautifully complete bell tower in the larger picture, whilst the small one shows the building as we have always known it; tower-less. St Columba s is not alone. Throughout the diocese and, indeed, throughout the world itself, there are countless examples of church buildings that, for one reason or another, were never completed. In my younger days this used to bother me. I longed for the day when an architect s plans could finally be made solid reality and every tower, spire and aisle completed. Now, though, it seems to me that our living in a world so full of the incomplete can be a very useful reminder. As this month we celebrate our special congregational anniversary; 140 years here in our building in Aubery Crescent, perhaps its incompleteness is a healthy reminder that the Church is not a building, but the people of God. Not only that, but that God is still at work in each one of us and that we have have not arrived at our destination nor reached completeness - God has yet more to do in us and through us, in our own day and generation, to further his Kingdom. Let us, then, give thanks for God s great faithfulness to St Columba s over these past 140 years and place our trust in all he seeks for us and this community in the years ahead. yours in the faith, Gordon 3

Summer Mission Planning B.C./A.D. T.V., this year s children s Summer Mission, will be set in a Television Studio and will take place from 3-7 July. The next planning meeting will take place in hall following the 11.00am service on Sunday, 18 June. Gift Day Sunday, 11 June 2017 Birthdays are special times when we can take the opportunity to say a special thank you to someone who means so much to us. Often we do this by offering them a gift to mark the occasion; something that says what we would otherwise find it difficult to express. What is true of individuals can be true of a church community. On Sunday, 11 June, Bishop Gregor hopes to join us as together we celebrate our Patronal Festival. It is a special one this year as it also marks 140 years since our community of faith moved to our current location in Aubrey Crescent. As part of our worship on the day, you will have the opportunity of making a thank offering by participating in the Gift Day. Simply place your thank offering in the Gift Day envelope provided as your special birthday gift to St Columba s. Accompany your gift with a prayer that, as we have been blessed, so may God bless many others through this place. The Rector 6

Patronal Festival Luncheon Following our celebratory Patronal Festival Sung Eucharist on Sunday, 11 June, we will enjoy a bring and share lunch together in the church hall. Please sign-up on the list in the church porch if you intend to come along and state what you might bring as a contribution to the meal. This should ensure we don t all end up eating salad and have no dessert The Rector Church Welcomers Needed First impressions are very important. This is the case in church as it is elsewhere. It is important that we offer a sincere and warm welcome to everyone who comes to worship here at St Columba s. We could do with some new people to volunteer to welcome those who come. The duties involve turning up a bit earlier than usual to put up the hymn numbers and prepare the books and service sheets; then to offer a smile and be on hand to give information to those who need it. If you would like to be involved in this important part of our work and witness, then, speak to the Rector or to Vicky, our Lay Representative, and we will ensure you are paired-up with someone and shown the ropes (literally, if you d fancy ringing the bell to call the faithful too) The Rector 7

Any hat knitters out there? On Sea Sunday, 21 May, we had a visit from Revd Tim Tunley, a Mission to Seafarers Chaplain. He spoke very well to us about the important role the Mission to Seafarers fulfils in being a friend to the many men and women who, by the very nature of their work, are away from their family for up to 10 months of the year. Not only that, they often work for a minimum wage and have little money to spare as most goes back to their home. Many of these seafarers are from warm developing countries but their working environment is onboard ships that sail in harsh climates and visit cold counties. A very practical way of helping them is for the knitters among us to to use up our odd bits of wool creating colourful warm woollen hats. These can be sent, via the church, to the chaplains and on to the seafarers - a free gift of love from the people of Scotland. Are you up to the challenge? Knitting patterns can be made available, but if you know how to knit you probably are well experienced in turning out something cosy for our seafarers. The Rector 8

Smalls for All impacting 77 women and girls this month We continue receiving used bras and new pants for children and women in Africa. We have been getting donations from the Largs community through Largs Facebook People page as well as from our young mums at toddlers. This month we have had donations of 60 used bras and 17 new pants. I m sure all our ladies underwear drawers are cleared out now, so we can now spread the word amongst our friends. If even one item stops a girl from being raped, or helps a mother who has had a vaginal repair get out of hospital quicker or lets a girl attend school during her period, then we have made a difference. Many thanks. Hilary Toddlers We will be on holiday from the end of the month and starting back in August. Our teddy bears picnic was enjoyed by all, but had to be inside unfortunately. If you know someone who might be interested in helping at toddlers please mention it to Gordon. We are loosing one of our volunteers. Accessories We are looking for a collection for a stall to raise funds for the holiday club. There is a collection bag at the back of the church for things such as toiletries, scarves, hats, golf balls, ties, bags and things you feel might sell well. Please look out your scarf and hat drawers now Installation at the Cathedral The Rector, who was made Synod Clerk at the last Diocesan Synod, will be installed as a Canon of St Mary s Cathedral at Evensong on the Feast of Pentecost; 6.30pm, Sunday 4 June. Everyone is very welcome to come to the Cathedral that evening to support all those being installed as Canons. 10

In Flora s Garden I was recently told by my physiotherapist, that there are 8 components of a healthy and balanced life: water, food, movement, sleep, getting rid of chronic stress, avoiding toxic chemicals, having a purpose in life, and having someone to share it with. I was considering this when I had a visit yesterday, from two lovely friends. We were sitting in my garden, enjoying the sun, and (aside from tea) drinking in the colours and scents of the flowers. Bees were active in the border and somewhere in the undergrowth, frogs, toads and newts were basking in the warmth. Overhead, buzzards were circling effortlessly on the thermals at high altitude, and swifts gave an aerobatic display over the rooftops. Meanwhile traffic could be heard - a low hum - on a nearby road, but we could have been miles away, deep in the country and not in a fairly urban setting. It made me think about my relationship to my garden. Naturally, I have a deep love and commitment to family and friends, but my garden, in terms of the physiotherapist s 8 point plan, is what I consider to be the true purpose in my life. To create a chemicalfree environment for insects and other beasties and to grow plants and flowers that will sustain them; to grow culinary and medicinal plants that I can use in the kitchen, and include interesting native plants, so that they do not die out. Over the coming months, I will be sharing what I am doing, what s happening in the garden and reflecting from the garden bench. All my work in the garden is done to the glory of God, for worship and praise belong to you Father, in every place and all times. What better way to pray for the life of the world, than on my knees weeding in the herbaceous border 11
